Turning off model training does not delete chats or guarantee that information is never retained or accessed. OpenAI itself advises: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.”
First identify which ChatGPT experience you’re using
Privacy behavior depends on whether you’re using a regular consumer chat, Temporary Chat, ChatGPT Health, or an account managed by an organization. Their history, memory, training, retention, and connected-data rules are not interchangeable. In a managed workspace, your organization’s settings and policies may also apply; check with its administrator rather than assuming consumer settings control the account.

For a consumer account, open Settings → Data controls and check Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” This applies to new conversations after the setting is disabled; it does not mean existing or future regular chats disappear from your history. Settings can vary according to whether you are signed in, your plan, and your workspace.

To remove a conversation from your account, delete the chat itself; switching off model improvement is not a deletion control. See OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT for the current settings and account-specific details.
Temporary Chat reduces exposure in history, but isn’t zero retention
Temporary Chat does not appear in your chat history, does not create or update memories, and is not used for model improvement while it remains temporary. OpenAI says it may retain a copy for safety purposes for up to 30 days. If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat. These limits make it different from disabling model improvement in a regular conversation, but do not make it a promise of immediate or complete deletion. See the Temporary Chat FAQ.

ChatGPT Health has distinct rules for connected health data
OpenAI says connected medical-record and Apple Health information, as well as conversations that use that information, are not used to train foundation models or target ads. Other conversations in the account follow the normal model-improvement setting. The Health Privacy Notice also says Health Features data is used to provide the service; a limited number of authorized personnel and trusted service providers may access it to improve model safety unless you have opted out. Those statements describe specific data and uses—not a blanket promise that no one can access health information.

Health availability and supported connected sources can change. Check what appears in your own account and consult the current Health Privacy Notice and ChatGPT Health announcement rather than assuming the feature is available to you or handles every conversation in the same way.

Disconnecting a source is not the same as deleting chats
OpenAI says synced data is deleted from its systems within 30 days after you disconnect a data source. Information already included in chat history remains there until you delete the conversations containing it. If your goal is to remove prior chat content, disconnecting a record or Apple Health source alone is not enough. See OpenAI’s Health in ChatGPT guidance.

A custom GPT action can send information to a third party. Once data is sent, that recipient’s privacy policy applies and may allow different uses or longer retention. Before including medical details, check whether the GPT uses actions or external services and review the recipient’s terms. OpenAI explains this distinction in its Data controls FAQ.

Share less, and use a clinician for care decisions
- Describe the question without adding your name, address, date of birth, medical-record number, or other identifying details unless they are genuinely needed.
- For another person’s medical information, do not enter identifiable details unless you have appropriate authority or consent.
- Choose the relevant privacy control before starting the conversation, and remember that a training setting, Temporary Chat, and deletion address different things.
- Do not treat ChatGPT as a clinician. For urgent symptoms, diagnosis, or consequential treatment decisions, contact a qualified healthcare professional.
These are prudent ways to limit what you disclose, not guarantees about how any particular account or service will handle information.
