What to Do If You Find a Bat in a Classroom

Keep students and staff away from a classroom bat, do not handle or release it, and contact animal control or public health for instructions and exposure assessment.

If you find a bat in a classroom, move students and staff away, keep everyone from touching or releasing it, and notify school administration and facilities staff. Contact local animal control or the health department for instructions on safe handling, testing, and what to do next. If anyone may have touched the bat, been bitten or scratched, or been unable to rule out contact, seek prompt guidance from public health or a medical professional.

What should I do immediately?

  1. Move people away. Keep students and staff out of the bat’s immediate area. Do not let anyone touch, handle, chase, or release it.
  2. Notify school leadership and facilities staff. Follow the school’s incident-reporting procedures while keeping people away from the animal.
  3. Call local animal control or the health department. Ask for directions on safe capture, testing, and next steps. CDC guidance says not to release a bat before consulting a public-health expert. If it cannot be safely captured, seek public-health advice.

CDC describes a container, cardboard, and leather work gloves as part of general guidance for capturing a bat in a home. That is not a classroom-specific procedure: teachers and other school staff should not treat capture as a routine task or attempt it without direction from local authorities. CDC advises avoiding bat contact and seeking a medical professional’s advice if contact may have occurred (CDC, Preventing Rabies from Bats). Its school recommendations identify bats among high-risk wildlife students should not touch and say wild animals are not appropriate classroom residents (CDC school-animal guidelines; CDC resources for schools and daycares).

Could a student have been exposed just by being in the room?

Presence in the same room does not, by itself, mean that every person needs rabies treatment. The important question is whether contact may have occurred and whether it can be ruled out. Ask who was present, whether anyone touched the bat or was bitten or scratched, and whether anyone was asleep, unattended, or unable to recognize or report contact. Bat bites can be tiny and may go unnoticed.

CDC advises assessing a situation in which a bat is found in a room with someone sleeping or with a child left unattended, because contact may be unclear (CDC, January 6, 2022). Report possible contact promptly to the health department or a medical professional. A lack of a visible mark alone does not rule out contact.

Bat Removal Cone, Bat One Way Door, Bat Exclusion Device
  • [One-Way Channel Design] The bat cone features a one-way door mechanism that allows bats to easily exit from the inside, but once they fly out, they cannot re-enter. This clever design ensures bats can leave safely.
  • [Right Angle Design] The 90-degree right angle shape allows for flush installation against walls, eaves, or rooflines without requiring additional spacers or modifications. Perfect for tight spaces where straight tubes cannot be installed, easily adapting to various complex positions.
  • [Long-Lasting Use] The bat cone is made of heavy-duty material, maintaining structural stability throughout the entire exclusion process. Resistant to cracking and reusable.
  • [Easy to Install] This bat removal cone is cleverly designed and easy to install. It protects building surfaces from damage while maintaining the structural appearance.
  • [Packaging Includes] 2 Bat cones and 8 screws.

The CDC says about 5% of bats submitted for rabies testing in the United States have tested positive. That figure, reported in 2026, applies only to bats submitted for testing—not to all bats or to the likelihood that someone in a particular classroom was exposed (CDC, MMWR, January 15, 2026).

What if someone was bitten, scratched, or may have had contact?

For a bite or scratch, wash the wound with soap and water and get medical help right away. If bat saliva or brain material may have reached the eyes, nose, mouth, or an open wound, seek urgent professional advice. Do not wait for a visible wound before reporting a possible exposure.

2 Pack Ultrasonic Bat Repellent Devices for Attics and Barns
  • 【Adjustable 10–70 kHz Output】Rotate the control dial to select a frequency based on the room layout and activity area. The broad range includes audible and ultrasonic settings, providing flexible use in attics, barns, garages and storage spaces. Lower settings may be audible to some people or pets.
  • 【Rechargeable Cordless Placement】The built-in 1000mAh battery provides up to 5 days of operation per full USB charge, depending on the selected frequency and operating conditions. Cordless use allows each unit to be placed near roosting or entry areas without requiring a nearby wall outlet.
  • 【Automatic 20/10 Sound Cycle】 Each device emits sound for 20 seconds and pauses for 10 seconds, supporting continuous operation while managing battery use. A one-touch power switch and clear LED operating indicator make setup and routine status checks simple.
  • 【Dry, Covered Use for Better Results】 This model is not waterproof and should be installed indoors or in sheltered outdoor locations protected from rain and moisture. Run the devices continuously near observed activity, remove sound-blocking obstacles, and adjust the frequency or position when needed. Keep away from pet resting areas and observe pets during initial use.
  • 【2-Pack Protection for Two Key Areas】 Place one device near a suspected entry point and the other in a separate activity area, such as an attic, garage, barn or storage room. The integrated rear hanging hole makes placement convenient in indoor or sheltered locations. Keep each speaker facing an open area, with furniture and stored items clear of the front for better sound distribution.

Rabies post-exposure decisions belong to clinicians and public-health officials, not school staff. CDC clinical guidance says direct bat contact should receive immediate assessment unless a bite or scratch can be definitively ruled out (CDC clinical overview). Contact local or state public health for an assessment that accounts for the circumstances, whether contact can be excluded, and whether the bat is available for testing (CDC clinical screening guidance). Do not tell everyone who was in the room that they need treatment; recommendations depend on the individual situation and local public-health assessment.

What should the school do after authorities handle the bat?

Follow school leadership, district, and local instructions about room access, cleaning, and parent communication. CDC’s school guidance says wild animals do not belong in classrooms and students should not touch bats, but the cited materials do not specify a bat-specific classroom cleaning or closure protocol. Do not improvise one in place of local guidance.

Bat Exclusion Device, 2 Pack Humane One Way Bat Door with Tape and Screws
  • 【Perfect One‑Way Tapered‑Cone Design】This bat exclusion device features a tapered‑cone design to guide bats outward. The one‑way bat door is constructed from premium plastic, delivering a smooth surface with a gradually narrowing 15‑degree downward angle. This helps bats exit faster while preventing them from re‑entering, providing a humane, safe and bat‑friendly solution
  • 【Application Scenarios】This humane one‑way exclusion tool is ideal for homes where bats enter through house gaps, stay active in attics, or cause noise at night. The compact bat cone can be installed in attics, under eaves, gable vents, ridge vents, along rooflines, and other narrow or irregular access points. This exclusion tool fits perfectly for common bat entry and exit areas
  • 【Easy Installation】Simple bat exclusion starts by placing the device over a confirmed bat entry and exit point. Secure it with the included screws or use tape on suitable surfaces. The included tape also helps seal uneven edges around the opening. After bat activity has stopped, remove the bat cones and seal the opening
  • 【Sturdy-Built & Reusable】Made of strong yet lightweight plastic, the one way bat exclusion device is designed for repeated use. After one opening is clear, simply remove it and move it to another area. For shoppers looking for a bat door one way solution, the two units can also be used on separate active openings for better value
  • 【Complete DIY Installation Kit】Kit includes 2 units for bat cones, bat removal, 1 roll of heavy-duty cloth-backed tape, 9 self-tapping screws, and 1 installation instruction manual. The all-in-one kit makes setup easier, even for first-time users

What if bats keep getting into the building?

Repeated entry is a separate facilities issue. Facilities staff can consult animal control or a wildlife-conservation agency about entry points and exclusion work. CDC’s home guidance discusses sealing openings and seeking agency help; local rules and wildlife protections may apply, so get local advice before arranging work (CDC bat guidance).

For broader context, CDC says around 100,000 Americans are vaccinated against rabies after a potential exposure each year. That national figure, published in 2025, is not an estimate of classroom risk or a recommendation for everyone present to receive treatment (CDC rabies prevention and control).
