Choose curbside recycling if service reaches your address and accepts the materials you need to recycle. Drop-off is the better fit when pickup is unavailable or its accepted-material rules do not cover your household’s items—provided a site is practical to reach. The right choice depends on your building, local rules, travel and storage effort, and any fees; neither method is a universal winner.
How access differs by housing type
Recycling access depends on both location and dwelling type. In its 2024 U.S. assessment, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported curbside access for 81 percent of single-family households, compared with on-property collection for 27 percent of multifamily households. Drop-off access was reported for 14 percent of single-family households and 61 percent of multifamily households. These are national assessment figures, not a promise that a particular address or building has service. EPA, An Assessment of the U.S. Recycling System (August 2024).

If you live in a single-family home
Start by checking whether curbside service covers your address. If it does, compare its accepted-material list with what your household actually discards. Drop-off can still make sense for materials not accepted at the curb, if the site accepts them and the trip is manageable.

Ask the property manager or building staff whether recycling is collected on-site, where materials should be placed, and which items are accepted. If there is no building collection, ask the municipality or hauler about public drop-off locations. A building’s trash service does not necessarily mean it has recycling pickup.

Compare the real effort, not just the service name
Curbside usually reduces the need to transport ordinary recyclables yourself, but it may require storage space and setting materials out as instructed. Drop-off avoids dependence on a pickup route, but adds sorting, carrying, and travel. EPA notes that some rural drop-off locations may be more than 20 miles away or difficult to reach by public transportation; in such cases, drop-off may be the only available route, but not an easy one. EPA, 2024 assessment.
- Access: Does service reach your exact address or building?
- Materials: Does the program accept the items you generate, and does it require items to be prepared in a particular way?
- Travel: For drop-off, consider the round trip, opening hours, transport, and whether you can combine it with another trip.
- Household logistics: Can you store recyclables cleanly until collection or a drop-off run? Is curbside set-out manageable?
- Cost and restrictions: Check for local service charges, eligibility limits, and building-specific arrangements. National evidence does not establish a universal household-cost winner.
Check accepted materials before using either option
There is no single accepted-material list that applies everywhere. Municipalities and haulers set local rules, and an item accepted in one program may be rejected in another. Use your city, county, or hauler’s current instructions as the authority. EPA’s materials table can help identify material categories, but it does not replace local directions: EPA U.S. State Recycling Landscape Dashboard.

- Space Saving Profile - The Highboy bin is perfect for tight or compact spaces; its narrow tall design and sleek shape make it ideal for the kitchen, garage, office, or other areas where space is limited while still large enough for household recycling.
- Easy Bag Removal - This indoor/outdoor recycle bin was designed with a tapered shape and vented sides to make it simple to remove a trash bag. Eliminate the struggle to remove a full bag of waste. The recommended bag size for ideal use is 33 gallons.
- Dustpan Edge - Sweep debris directly into the slim trash can with a dustpan edge that eliminates the need for a separate dustpan, making it easy and efficient to clean. The waste container is also made with smooth plastic to ensure easy cleaning.
- Easy to Carry - Designed with you in mind, the Highboy durable plastic recycling can has sturdy pass-through handles on top and a hand groove on the bottom. This makes moving the heavy-duty recycling container easier than ever.
- Multipack of 2 – The Highboy comes in a pack of 2, making it the perfect for kitchen, patio, garage, or office recycling bin. This is an excellent slim trash can for business or commercial use and pairs well with United Solutions’ Highboy Waste Container.
Do not use a recycling bin as a catch-all. EPA says plastic bags and wraps, electronics, and textiles generally cannot go in a curbside recycling bin; some may have specialized collection options. Check the relevant local program before setting them out or taking them to a site. EPA, Frequent Questions on Recycling.

A practical way to find the right service
- Look up your address on your city or county waste and recycling page, or with the contracted hauler. Confirm whether pickup reaches your dwelling, not just your street or neighborhood.
- Read the accepted-material and preparation rules. Check what goes in the bin, what must be kept out, and any instructions about containers or contamination.
- If pickup is unavailable or insufficient, locate a drop-off site. Confirm the materials it accepts, its hours, access restrictions, and whether residents must show proof of eligibility.
- Estimate the recurring effort. Consider storage, carrying, travel time, transport options, and whether you can make drop-off trips without a burdensome separate journey.
- Check charges and container requirements. Ask whether service has a local fee and whether the hauler or building requires a particular cart or container before buying one.
A recycling cart can make curbside set-out easier, and a bin can help store or carry materials, but neither changes what the local program accepts. EPA identifies carts as one option for easing curbside set-out. EPA, 2024 assessment.

What national recycling figures can—and cannot—tell you
National statistics provide context, not a prediction of what happens to your household’s materials. EPA’s 2024 survey found that about 50 percent of states and territories measure an overall recycling rate; among those that do, the mean reported estimate was roughly 30 percent. Reporting methods are not fully uniform, so these figures do not show whether curbside or drop-off will perform better in a particular community. EPA U.S. State Recycling Landscape Dashboard.
EPA has also estimated that improving U.S. curbside collection, drop-off, and processing infrastructure would require $36.5 billion to $43.4 billion in investment by 2030. This is a national estimate covering multiple parts of the recycling system—not a bill for an individual household or a comparison of local service costs. EPA, 2024 assessment.
