How to Sort Household Recycling and Avoid Contaminating the Bin

Put an item in your curbside recycling bin only when your local program accepts it. Empty containers, remove food residue, keep paper dry, and use separate collection routes for items such as plastic film, batteries, and electronics. Recycling rules vary by address, so your county, municipality, waste hauler, or sorting facility’s current list—not a resin number or a general “recyclable” label—is the final guide.

What can I put in my recycling bin?

Across the United States, common curbside candidates include cardboard, paper, food boxes, mail, beverage and food cans, glass bottles and jars, and plastic bottles, jugs, and caps. These are examples, not a guarantee that your program accepts every one of them. Some communities do not collect glass or certain plastics; some use one mixed bin, while others require materials to be separated. Check the accepted-material list for your address before adding an item. The EPA’s common recyclables guide is a useful general reference, but it does not replace local rules.

A plastic resin identification code tells you what type of plastic an item is made from; it does not mean your local curbside program accepts it. When instructions are unclear, look up the material in your provider’s directory or contact the provider. Until you confirm, leave it out of the recycling bin rather than guessing.

How should I prepare items for recycling?

Empty containers and remove food residue

For containers your program accepts, empty them and rinse or scrape plastic, metal, and glass to remove food debris. They do not need to be spotless: EPA describes some takeout containers as “spatula-clean.” Local instructions take precedence. Keep paper clean and dry, and flatten cardboard boxes when your provider requests it.

EPA’s general guidance says pizza boxes can be recycled if food scraps are removed, but paper rules vary by program. Check locally, especially if the box is greasy or soiled.

Separate materials only as instructed

Some programs collect accepted materials together; others require separate bins. Follow the collection instructions for your address rather than sorting by a rule from another town. If you manage recycling at home, clear labels with words and pictures can help household members use the correct bin; tailor labels to your local accepted-material list.

Can plastic bags go in the recycling bin?

As a general rule, do not put plastic bags, wraps, or other plastic film in a household curbside recycling bin. Some grocery and retail stores have separate collection for plastic film, but acceptance varies. Confirm that the drop-off accepts the specific item before taking it there. The EPA’s recycling FAQ also explains why nonaccepted items can cause problems in recycling loads.

What should never go in my recycling bin?

There is no single nationwide list that applies to every household, but several items should not go in curbside recycling by default. They may need a special drop-off, take-back, reuse, composting, hazardous-waste, or trash route instead.

Check your local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency for collection events, permanent drop-off sites, or approved retailers. Battery guidance can depend on battery chemistry and local rules.
  • Electronics and textiles: These generally need a separate collection or reuse route, not the household curbside bin.
  • Plastic bags and wraps: Use a separate film collection only if a nearby site accepts the particular material.
  • Food and food-soiled paper: Do not assume scraps or heavily soiled paper belong in recycling. Check whether local guidance directs them to composting or another route.
  • Other unusual or potentially hazardous items: The EPA’s general FAQ identifies garden hoses, sewing needles, bowling balls, propane cylinders, and nonempty aerosol cans as items not to put in household recycling. Follow local instructions for safe disposal; do not infer that one route applies everywhere.

When an item does not appear on your local list, check before putting it in the bin. The EPA says, “Putting items in the recycling bin that can’t be recycled can contaminate the recycling stream.” Nonaccepted items may have to be removed and landfilled, increase sorting and disposal costs, or damage equipment at a recycling center. Leftover food or liquid and putting material in the wrong collection stream can also create problems.

How do I check the right disposal route?

  1. Identify the item and its condition. Note what it is made of, whether it contains food or liquid, and whether it includes parts made from different materials.
  2. Check your local provider’s current accepted-material list. Search your municipality, county, or hauler’s recycling instructions for your address. Confirm whether the item is accepted curbside and whether your program uses mixed or separate bins.
  3. Check preparation and collection details. Look for instructions about rinsing, drying, flattening, removing or keeping caps attached, and using a specific bin or drop-off site.
  4. Use a separate route when required. For batteries and household hazardous waste, consult the local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency. For plastic film, verify a participating retail collection point. For electronics or textiles, look for local take-back, reuse, or drop-off guidance.
  5. If acceptance remains unclear, keep it out of recycling. Contact the provider or use its waste directory rather than putting an uncertain item in the bin.

Does recycling contamination have a national percentage?

The EPA guidance cited here does not establish a current nationwide household-bin contamination percentage. A percentage should not be treated as national unless it is tied to a defined place, year, and original source. For context, EPA reported that paper made up 23 percent of U.S. municipal solid waste generated in 2018 and that Americans recycled about 68 percent of the paper they used that year. Those are historical 2018 figures, not current rates or measures of household-bin contamination.
