A preorder is only a good decision when the specific edition, seller, platform and country give you a benefit worth accepting the payment and refund restrictions. “Preorder” does not automatically mean a bonus, early access, a lower price or guaranteed release-day delivery. Before paying, verify the listing’s edition, release date, promised extras, charge date, cancellation method and delivery terms. Policies differ sharply: Nintendo, Steam and PlayStation publish different rules, and the examples below are not universal rules for every store or region.
The safest approach is to treat a preorder as a conditional purchase. Identify what you receive, when money leaves your account, what action ends your cancellation rights and how the game will reach you. Keep the confirmation email and recheck the terms if the release date or edition changes.

What are you actually getting by preordering?
A preorder reserves a particular listing before its release date. The value can be release-day digital access, a physical copy shipped around launch, an advertised bonus, or access to a special edition. It can also provide no meaningful advantage beyond placing the order early. The word itself is not a guarantee.

Publishers often sell standard, deluxe and collector editions with different prices and entitlements. Read the exact edition name and the included-content list. Confirm whether a bonus is a permanent entitlement, a one-time download code, an in-box item or an incentive limited to a particular retailer. A store page that says “preorder bonus” without identifying the item or delivery method leaves an important question unanswered.

Early access is a separate promise
Steam says participating games identify whether a pre-purchase version includes “Advance Access.” If the edition includes it, Steam’s preorder policy allows a refund request any time before Advance Access begins; the standard 14-day refund period starts on the game’s release day. Do not assume every preorder includes early play, and do not assume the early-access start time is the same as the public release time.
Nintendo says bonus content is offered occasionally rather than with every digital preorder. Read the listing for the particular game and edition to see whether anything is included.
When will you be charged?
Payment timing is controlled by the seller, not by a universal preorder convention. The following Nintendo US examples show why you must read the store’s own terms.

These are Nintendo’s US terms, not a promise made by every Nintendo storefront or retailer. Other digital stores may charge immediately, at a scheduled interval or when an order is prepared for fulfillment. If your budget depends on delaying payment, look for a stated charge date before submitting the order rather than relying on the release date alone.
Can you cancel or get a refund if you change your mind?
Refund rights depend on the store, region, product type and what you have done with the purchase. Read the policy linked from the checkout page before paying. The following official policies illustrate materially different outcomes.

Why region matters
The PlayStation terms above are specifically for the UK. Nintendo’s payment and refund examples are from its US support pages. A policy from another country may use different deadlines, statutory rights or cancellation procedures. Select your account’s country and the store where you will actually pay; do not substitute a policy from a different region because the brand name is the same.
Does downloading or preloading affect your ability to cancel?
Often, yes. A preload is a download made before the game unlocks, while streaming starts using the product without downloading all of it. Stores may treat either action as the start of digital fulfillment.
- Nintendo’s eShop FAQ ties its preorder cancellation window to both conditions: payment must not have been processed and the game must not have been preloaded. Once those events occur, the FAQ’s stated cancellation route is no longer available.
- Under the PlayStation UK policy, the listed preorder cancellation paths require that the main product has not begun downloading or streaming. Automatic downloads can begin when that setting is enabled, so check the console’s automatic-download options if preserving cancellation flexibility matters.
- Steam’s preorder rule uses release and, where relevant, the Advance Access start as the key boundaries. A preload is not the same as release, but playing the game after release can count toward the two-hour limit.
Before paying, find the store’s automatic-download setting and decide whether to disable it temporarily. Do not launch, stream or play a game while you are still deciding whether to keep it. If you need to cancel, use the seller’s account or support process before the applicable deadline and save the confirmation.

Are preorder bonuses guaranteed, and when do you receive them?
A bonus is guaranteed only to the extent that the listing clearly promises it for your edition, platform, seller and purchase window. Conditions can include buying before a stated cutoff, selecting a particular edition, redeeming a code or claiming the item from an in-game menu.

Nintendo’s eShop FAQ says bonus download codes become available after payment has processed, no sooner than seven days before release. That means placing an order months in advance does not necessarily deliver the code immediately. Check the account email, order details and the game’s listing after the charge is taken.
Nintendo also warns that a selected Game Voucher is not reserved for a preorder. If you spend your vouchers before payment is processed and none remains, the payment can fail and the preorder can be canceled. Keep the required voucher available if you intend to use that method.
Steam Advance Access
Steam marks participating game versions to show whether Advance Access is included. Look for that indication on the exact edition page instead of inferring access from community posts, trailers or a different edition. The start of Advance Access is also the point before which Steam’s special preorder refund timing applies.
Physical bonuses and codes
For a physical order, determine whether the bonus is packed in the box, emailed separately or supplied by the retailer. Ask how a missing or damaged code is handled and retain the receipt. A shipment arriving late can also delay access to a code that is physically printed inside the package.

Digital or physical: which format fits your priorities?
Neither format is universally better. Compare the practical trade-offs for this game and seller.

Choose digital when immediate account-based access and preload matter more than resale or lending. Choose physical when a disc or cartridge, delayed payment flexibility offered by the retailer, or a collectible package matters more. Verify those assumptions against the actual listing rather than treating them as universal format rules.

- Open the exact listing. Confirm the game title, platform, edition and release date. Avoid relying on a search-result snippet or an older announcement.
- Inventory the promised benefit. Write down the bonus, early-access period, soundtrack, cosmetic item or other inclusion. Note whether it is a code, an account entitlement or a physical item.
- Check the charge event. Look for language such as “charged today,” “charged before release” or a specific processing date. Make sure the account has the required funds or voucher at that time.
- Read the cancellation route. Find the store’s refund page and note the deadline, playtime limit and any condition about payment, preload, downloading or streaming.
- Review automatic downloads. If a download can remove a cancellation path, change the setting before the preload begins. Record the original setting so you can restore it later.
- Check delivery for physical orders. Confirm dispatch timing, estimated arrival, shipping address and how a missing bonus code will be supplied.
- Save evidence. Keep the order number, receipt, edition description and policy link. Take a screenshot if the listing promises a time-limited bonus.
- Recheck after changes. If the release date, price, edition contents or seller changes, read the updated terms before the next charge or download event.
Common preorder mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every preorder has a bonus
Some games offer no extra item, and some bonuses apply only to a named edition or retailer. Treat an unlisted bonus as nonexistent for decision-making.
Confusing an announcement with a contractual listing
Trailers and social posts can describe plans, but the checkout page controls the edition you are buying. Compare the final cart contents with the advertised promise before payment.
Spending the funds needed for a scheduled charge
A delayed charge can fail if the account balance, card authorization or voucher is no longer available. Nintendo’s voucher warning is a concrete example: using the selected voucher elsewhere can lead to a failed payment and canceled preorder.
Letting automatic downloads start unintentionally
On platforms whose policy conditions cancellation on no download or stream, automatic downloads can change your options without a deliberate launch. Review console settings before the preload period.
Using the wrong country’s refund page
A deadline from another region may not apply to your account. Identify the country of the store account and read that jurisdiction’s policy, especially for digital purchases.
Expecting physical launch-day delivery
Release day is not the same as ship date. Nintendo’s US support page says physical pre-purchases ship one to three business days after release, so a buyer who needs access on launch day should account for transit time or consider a digital edition.

When does preordering make sense?
Preorder when the benefit is specific and valuable
A preorder can be reasonable when the exact edition includes an early-access period or bonus you genuinely want, the seller’s charge date fits your budget and you understand the refund boundary. Record the cutoff for the bonus and the date Advance Access or release begins.
Wait when the information is incomplete
Hold off if the listing does not identify the edition contents, the release date is unstable, the payment timing is unclear or the refund policy conflicts with your need to try the game first. Waiting preserves information and often avoids a charge before reviews or technical reports are available.
Use a physical order for a different reason
Order a physical copy because you value the boxed format, lending or resale—not because “preorder” promises earlier delivery. Check dispatch and carrier estimates separately.

Use the policy for the store and country shown at checkout. If the listing and policy appear inconsistent, ask support for a written clarification before placing the order.
