Start by identifying the AirPods Pro generation and case
“AirPods Pro” does not identify one interchangeable product. Apple’s model-identification guide distinguishes AirPods Pro 3, introduced in 2025; AirPods Pro 2 with a USB-C case, from 2023; AirPods Pro 2 with a Lightning case, from 2022; and AirPods Pro 1, from 2019. Check the model number in the paired device’s Bluetooth settings or on the earbuds, then compare it with the seller’s description and the case variant. This matters when comparing features, accessories, and replacement parts. In particular, do not assume replacement tips advertised simply for “AirPods Pro” fit every generation. Understand what “refurbished” promises
Apple Certified Refurbished
Apple says its Certified Refurbished products are cleaned and inspected, undergo full functional testing, and may receive genuine Apple replacement parts as needed. Its general program describes a one-year limited warranty, free shipping and returns, and potential savings of up to 15%. That is a program-level maximum, not a guarantee of a particular discount on AirPods Pro. Apple Certified Refurbished program details state the general terms.

Apple has also listed “Refurbished AirPods Pro 2 with MagSafe Charging Case (USB-C).” Its specific listing states a 14-day return policy. Listing availability, pricing, and terms can change, so check the live product page before relying on them; these Apple terms do not apply to third-party stock. Third-party refurbished or discounted listings
For other sellers, read the listing’s definition of refurbished and identify who is responsible for the remedy: the retailer, a marketplace program, or an individual seller. A label alone does not establish the inspection process, battery condition, included accessories, warranty, or return rights. Confirm that the stated protections apply to the actual item and seller, not just to a general marketplace program.

Compare the terms that affect the real value
Compare the discounted or refurbished pair with a new pair on sale, using the total price after shipping and tax—not just the advertised reduction. A lower price may not compensate for an unclear battery, limited returns, or missing accessories.

Do not treat Apple’s program terms as a market-wide refurbishing standard or infer a typical used price from Apple’s “up to 15%” program figure. Prices and inventory vary, and there is no established market-wide discount that makes one listing a bargain by itself.

Check the serial number, but do not rely on it alone
Apple says the serial number can be found in Bluetooth settings on a paired device, on the case lid, and on original packaging or receipts. You can use it to look up coverage or arrange service. Apple explains where to find an AirPods serial number, and its coverage-check page lets you check service coverage.
A serial-number lookup is one useful check, not conclusive proof of authenticity or condition. Match the model information to the offer, inspect the earbuds and case, and test the set during the seller’s return period.

Ask about warranty, battery wear, and repair
Apple’s standard limited warranty covers manufacturing issues for one year from the purchase date; it does not cover accidental damage or batteries that wear down through normal use. Apple’s service page says repair or replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty, whichever is longer. Service options and estimates depend on location, availability, coverage, and inspection. Check the coverage and local terms for the specific pair rather than assuming a discounted or refurbished unit carries a full Apple warranty. Apple does not give a universal battery-health percentage for buyers to use when evaluating a used pair. Ask the seller what they know about battery condition and what remedy is available if the earbuds do not perform as represented. Without a meaningful disclosure or return option, battery uncertainty is a real part of the price comparison.

Test the pair promptly during the return window
Once the AirPods arrive, pair them and compare the model information with the listing. Test both earbuds and the case rather than assuming that a successful pairing means every function works.
- Confirm both earbuds and the case charge.
- Try the microphones and controls.
- Test noise cancellation and Transparency features advertised for that generation.
- Check that the included tips are present, clean, and the right size and generation.
- Contact the seller promptly if anything is missing, mismatched, or faulty, and use the documented return or warranty process.
