To pair AirPods Pro, turn on Bluetooth, put the earbuds in their open case, and select them on your device. On an iPhone or iPad, you can usually follow the setup animation instead. The case control depends on the generation: AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use the setup button on the back; AirPods Pro 3 uses a double tap on the front. In either case, wait for the status light to flash white.
Find the pairing control for your AirPods Pro
Keep both earbuds in the case and open the lid before activating pairing mode. Apple’s instructions distinguish the controls by generation:

- AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2: Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about five seconds, or until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Pro 3: Double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
Do not use the rear-button instruction for Pro 3. If you are unsure which model you have, use Apple’s identification guidance linked from its AirPods pairing guide.

Pair AirPods Pro with an iPhone or iPad
Use the setup animation
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- Put both AirPods Pro in the case, open the lid, and hold it near your iPhone or iPad.
- When the setup animation appears, follow the on-screen instructions to finish pairing.
Apple advises keeping the device software current. If you want access to Find My features, the device should have Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity during pairing. See Apple’s iPhone connection instructions.

If the animation does not appear
- With the earbuds in the open case, activate pairing mode using the control for your generation and wait for the status light to flash white.
- On the iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap your AirPods Pro when they appear in the device list.

Pair AirPods Pro with a Mac
- Open the Apple menu, choose System Settings > Bluetooth, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- With both earbuds in the open case, activate pairing mode using the control for your generation. Wait for the status light to flash white.
- Select your AirPods Pro from the nearby Bluetooth devices and click Connect.
If you already set up the AirPods with an iPhone and your Mac is signed in to the same Apple Account, they can connect automatically. If necessary, select them from the Mac’s sound controls. Follow Apple’s instructions for pairing with an Apple device.

Pair AirPods Pro with an Android phone
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on. On some Android phones, the path is Settings > Connections > Bluetooth; labels vary by device.
- Put both earbuds in the case and open the lid.
- Activate pairing mode for your AirPods Pro generation and wait for the status light to flash white.
- Choose the AirPods Pro from the available Bluetooth devices.
On a non-Apple device, AirPods work as a Bluetooth headset for listening and calls, but Siri is unavailable. See Apple’s non-Apple pairing instructions.

What changes between Apple devices and Android

Automatic connection to other Apple devices applies when they are signed in to the same Apple Account; it is not an Android pairing method.

If AirPods Pro will not connect
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac software.
- Put both earbuds in the case and check that both are charging.
- Confirm Bluetooth is on for the device you are pairing with.
- Retry pairing. If the AirPods are not listed or still will not connect, activate pairing mode for the correct generation and select them manually in Bluetooth settings.
If they connect but sound still comes from the device’s built-in speakers, select AirPods Pro as the audio output. Apple’s additional checks are in its AirPods connection troubleshooting guide.
