If your AirPods Pro won’t connect, charge, or play audio, start by checking that both earbuds are seated in a powered case and charging. Then work through the steps for the specific problem. Before resetting, identify your AirPods Pro generation: Apple’s reset controls differ between older and newer models.

AirPods Pro won’t connect

  1. Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you want to use, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
  2. Place both AirPods in the case and check that they are charging. Charging trouble can also prevent a connection.
  3. Put the AirPods in your ears, open the device’s audio output control, and select your AirPods Pro. Raise the volume and test playback.
  4. If the AirPods do not appear or still will not connect, put both back in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then reopen it and try again.
  5. To pair with an iPhone or iPad, open the case near the device and use the pairing control for your AirPods Pro generation. To pair with a Mac, follow Apple’s manual pairing instructions.
  6. If connection still fails, reset the AirPods using the generation-appropriate steps below. Apple’s guidance is: “If you still can’t connect, reset your AirPods.”

AirPods Pro won’t charge

Charge the case and both earbuds

  1. Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and connect the case to power for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Use a cable that matches the case’s charging port. Some cases have Lightning ports and others have USB-C; check the case before choosing a cable.
  3. Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the case and power adapter, and plug the adapter into a working outlet.
  4. If charging wirelessly with a compatible case and the status light does not illuminate, reposition the case. If needed, try a compatible wired connection.
  5. Check the charge status on a connected Apple device or at the case. If the case still will not charge, follow Apple’s model-specific instructions to clean its charging port: How to clean your AirPods.
  6. If charging remains unsuccessful, try the reset steps below. A reset clears custom settings.

One AirPod isn’t playing audio or is quieter

  1. Check that the case has charge, put both AirPods in it, and close the lid for 30 seconds.
  2. Check the charge status of each AirPod. Then connect them, test the affected AirPod, and repeat the test after charging both.
  3. If one side remains quiet, remove its ear tip and inspect the speaker and microphone mesh for debris. Follow Apple’s cleaning instructions if needed.
  4. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance and make sure the balance is centered.
  5. If the AirPod still does not work, reset the pair. If it is a replacement AirPod, follow Apple’s replacement AirPod setup guidance.

Reset AirPods Pro: identify the generation first

AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2 use the setup button on the back of the case. Newer AirPods generations use a front-of-case double-tap sequence instead. Check your model and follow the matching Apple reset instructions; do not use the rear-button steps for a model with different controls.

AirPods Pro 1 or AirPods Pro 2

  1. Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
  2. On the paired iPhone or iPad, open Bluetooth settings. If your AirPods appear, tap the info button beside them and choose Forget This Device.
  3. Open the case lid. Hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white.
  4. Follow the prompts on your device to reconnect the AirPods.

Resetting restores custom settings to their defaults, so you may need to set your preferences again.

When to contact Apple

If the checks and the correct reset procedure do not resolve the problem, identify your AirPods and case model, check coverage, and review Apple’s service and repair options. Apple also lists replacement AirPods and cases. A replacement may be an option, but troubleshooting alone does not establish that one is required.
