1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAirPods Pro 3 and Sony WF-1000XM5 suit different priorities. Sony specifies multipoint connections and a broader codec list that includes LDAC, while Apple emphasizes features for use across Apple devices. The official specifications available here do not establish which has better noise cancellation, sound, calls, or comfort in a direct test. This comparison focuses on AirPods Pro 3, Apple’s current listed generation, and distinguishes AirPods Pro 2 where relevant.
Which should you choose?
- Lean toward Sony WF-1000XM5 if connecting to more than one device and choosing among audio codecs, including LDAC, matter to you. Sony lists multipoint, Bluetooth 5.3, and SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3 support.
- Lean toward AirPods Pro 3 if you use Apple devices and value Apple’s listed automatic switching and generation-specific features. Apple says AirPods Pro can connect to non-Apple devices as Bluetooth headphones, but functionality is limited.
- For noise cancellation, sound, calls, and comfort, these manufacturer specifications do not establish a head-to-head winner. Look for an independent comparison of these exact models, or try the fit yourself if possible.
Noise cancellation: no direct winner is established
Apple says AirPods Pro 3 has up to twice the active noise cancellation of the original AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 with ANC. That is Apple’s comparison with other Apple products, not a measurement against Sony WF-1000XM5. Sony lists noise cancellation and ambient sound mode but does not publish a comparable result against AirPods.

Those claims and feature descriptions are not enough to rank the earbuds against each other. A useful head-to-head verdict would require comparable testing of both models under the same conditions.
Compatibility, connections, and codecs
Sony WF-1000XM5
Sony lists Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint connection, and support for SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3. These specifications make the Sony model worth considering if you switch among devices or specifically want a choice of codecs. Codec support alone does not establish that it will sound better in your particular setup.

AirPods Pro 3
Apple lists automatic switching among Apple devices. AirPods Pro can also be used as Bluetooth headphones with non-Apple devices, but Apple says functionality is limited; that does not mean they cannot connect to Android. If you use Android or a mix of platforms, check which Apple-specific features you would be giving up before choosing.
Sony’s Help Guide includes a compatible-iPhone list marked “As of March 2023.” Treat that as dated, model-specific documentation, not a current guarantee of compatibility with every device.

Battery life and charging
| Model | Published playback claim | Charging information |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | Up to 8 hours on one charge with ANC enabled, according to Apple’s current comparison page. | Apple’s comparison page also discusses AirPods Pro 2 case charging options; check the exact Pro 3 case details for your market before buying. |
| Sony WF-1000XM5 | Up to 8 hours of continuous music playback with noise canceling on, or up to 12 hours with it off, according to Sony’s US support specifications. | Sony lists USB and wireless charging with the case. |
These are manufacturer maximums, not equivalent independent test results. Sony’s Help Guide notes that charging and usage hours can vary with conditions. Apple also says battery life depends on settings, environment, usage, and other factors. The figures do not establish a numerical winner because the claims may use different methods and conditions.
Water and sweat resistance
Sony lists IPX4-equivalent water resistance for WF-1000XM5. Apple says AirPods Pro 2 and its case were tested to IPX4 under IEC 60529 in controlled laboratory conditions, and that resistance may decrease with normal wear. These are not waterproof ratings; do not immerse either product. Check the specifications for the exact AirPods Pro generation you are considering rather than applying Pro 2’s rating to Pro 3.

Fit, sound, calls, and price
The cited manufacturer information does not provide comparable testing of fit, comfort, sound quality, or call quality for these specific earbuds. Those judgments are also sensitive to ear shape, device, and use. If one of those factors matters most, look for an independent review that tests both exact models and check the retailer’s return policy.
