Before buying a used Caterpillar machine, verify its identity and history, inspect it in person, and compare its condition and likely costs with the work you need it to do. A Cat Certified Used designation adds a defined dealer inspection and preparation process, but it is not a substitute for reviewing the individual machine’s report and written coverage terms.
Start with the machine’s identity and records
Ask for the exact model, serial number, configuration, operating hours and attachments. Match the serial number on the machine to the listing and records; resolve discrepancies before proceeding. Caterpillar recommends reviewing service and repair records, conducting your own inspection and test-driving the machine (Caterpillar’s used-equipment buying guidance).

- Request maintenance and service history, repairs, parts replaced, service hours and any incident or accident reports.
- Ask whether any original warranty remains, and request the written terms.
- Request fluid-sampling results and the inspection report if available.
- Ask what work was done to prepare the machine for sale, with itemized repairs and replacements.
- Ask about prior ownership and use. Cat Certified Used machines may come from dealer rental fleets, trade-ins or lease returns; a rental-fleet origin may mean a service history is available, but it does not establish the condition of that particular machine (Caterpillar’s Certified Used overview).
Treat records as evidence to compare with the machine, not proof by themselves that it is in good condition.
Inspect it systematically in person
Begin with a walkaround before startup. Look for visible leaks, damage, missing components, cracked glass, damaged hoses, uneven wear and signs of repair. If you are not equipped to assess heavy machinery, arrange an inspection by a qualified independent heavy-equipment inspector.

Undercarriage or tires
On a wheeled machine, check tires for uneven wear, bulges, cracks and missing bolts. Caterpillar recommends using a tread gauge to assess tire wear (Caterpillar’s used-equipment inspection tips). A tread gauge does not measure tracked undercarriage wear. Cat’s certified inspection process may use track-measuring or ultrasonic wear tools for undercarriage assessment.
Engine, transmission and hydraulics
Where it is safe and appropriate, start and operate the machine. Watch for warning or error messages, abnormal noises, smoke, leaks, or difficulty engaging or moving. Check hydraulic cylinders, hoses, the pump compartment and attachments for leaks, scoring, wear or damage. Caterpillar notes that hydraulic repairs can be time-consuming and costly.

Controls and operation
If you are qualified and conditions are safe, operate the controls through a representative work cycle and test the functions you expect to use. A brief idle is not a substitute for testing the machine in operation. Caterpillar’s Certified Used process includes operational tests, and its general buying guidance recommends a test drive.

Cat Certified Used is a specific Caterpillar dealer designation with an inspection and preparation process; a machine advertised simply as used is not thereby certified. Caterpillar says the process can include an inspection of up to 140 points, required service and the latest maintenance. Its inspection page describes a review of configuration, additions, service and repair history, fluid samples and service codes, followed by a walkaround, startup, maneuvering and operational tests (Caterpillar’s Certified Used Inspection page).

The standard inspection rates components as Good, Fair or Poor: Good means no repair or replacement is needed; Fair means repair is appropriate but replacement is not needed; Poor means replacement is needed. Caterpillar says critical components and items rated Fair or Poor receive remarks and photographs. To receive the Cat Certified Used designation, all components must rate Good on Caterpillar’s standard inspection form, and items that fail the stated requirements must be repaired before the designation is applied.
Caterpillar’s stated criteria include at least 50% life remaining for specified undercarriage or tires and ground-engaging tools. The page also describes criteria for the cab, components, cylinders, sheet metal and counterweights, glass and mirrors, lights, and hoses. These are program requirements, not a promise of future life or proof that the machine suits every workload.

Ask for the inspection report tied to the exact serial-numbered machine. Read its remarks and photographs, and clarify any mismatch among the report, listing and machine as it stands today. Certification provides standardized evidence; it does not remove the need to judge the machine’s suitability and condition.
Get the actual protection terms in writing
Caterpillar says Cat Certified Used equipment is protected for at least 12 months or a specified number of operating hours. Coverage varies by product, application and location, so the designation alone does not establish the precise protection for a particular machine (Caterpillar’s used-equipment warranty information).

Before relying on coverage in your purchase decision, obtain the applicable written terms from an authorized Cat dealer. Confirm covered components, the time or hour limit, exclusions, transfer conditions and how to make a claim.
Compare machines by total cost and job fit
Compare any candidates on the same basis rather than choosing by asking price or hours alone. Account for condition, likely repairs, remaining tire or undercarriage life, attachment wear, service history, available protection and local access to parts and service. Caterpillar’s reviewed material does not provide a universal used-machine price benchmark or value formula.

- Model, serial number, age and operating hours
- Asking price plus expected repairs and maintenance
- Service and repair history, parts replaced and incident history
- Current condition and any independent inspection findings
- Remaining tire or undercarriage life and attachment wear
- Inspection report, certification status and written protection terms
- Local dealer, parts and service access
- Financing terms and total ownership cost
Financing availability and terms depend on the buyer’s location and the current offer; verify them directly rather than assuming a general program applies.

Caterpillar describes condition monitoring as a combination of inspections, fluid analysis, electronic equipment information and equipment history. Cat S·O·S fluid analysis can provide information about oil and coolant condition and component wear (Caterpillar’s S·O·S fluid analysis information). Interpret any sample results alongside maintenance records, operating behavior and physical inspection; a fluid report alone cannot establish the machine’s overall condition.
