Before choosing one, check what it hears and stores, how it handles children’s questions, whether its age guidance fits your child, and what parents can control. A January 2026 Common Sense Media assessment of three conversational toys—Grem, Bondu and Miko 3—raised concerns about privacy, response reliability and emotional attachment. Those findings apply to the products and age groups assessed, not automatically to every toy marketed as AI-powered.
What does “AI-powered toy” mean for a parent?
For a conversational toy, AI may mean that a child speaks to an internet-connected device and receives spoken responses. That is different from a toy with electronic sounds or a screen-based learning activity. The more the product acts like a conversation partner, the more important it is to check both its technical safeguards and the role it may play in a child’s relationships and play.

Common Sense Media’s January 2026 assessment examined Grem, Bondu and Miko 3, describing them as internet-connected, voice-interacting devices that collect conversation data and are presented as educational tools and companions. It considered response reliability, content safety, developmental fit, privacy practices, attachment risks and parental oversight. The report does not establish a winner or show that every AI toy shares the same characteristics.

1. Age guidance and developmental fit
Check the package’s age guidance and safety information, then consider whether the toy suits your child’s interests and abilities. A product’s advertised age range is not proof that its conversations or companion-like behavior are a good developmental fit. The CPSC advises choosing toys that match a child’s interests and abilities and following packaging guidance. It also advises keeping small balls and toys with small parts away from children under three; toys that present choking hazards for children under three must carry age labels.

2. Microphones, cameras and listening indicators
Find out whether the toy has a microphone or camera, when each is active, and how the child or parent can tell. Ask whether the toy listens only after a button press or wake word, or whether it may be listening in other situations. Do not assume a light or sound indicator exists—or that its meaning is clear—without checking the product’s instructions and settings.
3. Data collection, storage and deletion
Read the current privacy notice and setup instructions for specifics. Check what information is collected, where it is stored, how long it is retained, whether it is shared, who can access it, and whether a parent can review and delete it. Also check what information is collected by any required app or online account, not just by the toy itself. The FTC’s connected-toy guidance recommends asking these questions and checking setup requirements, default settings and parental controls.

4. Content safeguards and answer reliability
Ask how the toy responds to sensitive or inappropriate topics, what happens when it does not understand a child, and whether it can distinguish a reliable answer from a confident-sounding mistake. Look for clear information about safeguards and their limits rather than relying on broad claims that a toy is safe or educational. Common Sense Media assessed both content safety and response reliability in its review of the three named conversational toys; that assessment does not validate the claims of every manufacturer.

Before purchase, determine whether setup requires an account, app, internet connection or parental approval, and whether the toy can be used with limits or without optional features. Check what parents can manage, inspect or turn off, including listening, content settings and data deletion. A control is useful only if its purpose and effect are understandable to the family.

6. Play without emotional dependence
Consider whether the toy supports open-ended play and learning, or encourages a child to treat it as a human-like confidant or friend. Common Sense Media reported attachment-oriented design features in the products it assessed and raised concern that young children could confuse AI with real people. That is a product- and age-specific concern, not a universal conclusion about all electronic toys. UNICEF’s child-centered AI guidance treats development and well-being as important alongside privacy, safety, fairness, transparency, accountability and inclusion.
How do privacy rules apply to connected toys?
FTC guidance explains that COPPA can require covered operators collecting personal information from children under 13 to disclose privacy practices, obtain parental consent, secure information and provide deletion rights. Whether a particular toy or associated service is covered depends on the operator and circumstances; this is a general explanation, not legal advice. Consult current FTC materials for interpretation.

For the practical buying decision, do not treat a general statement about compliance as a substitute for understanding the toy’s actual data practices. Check the product’s current privacy notice and the settings available to parents.
What benefits might an AI toy offer?
Interactive toys may offer opportunities for learning, play or accessibility, but those possibilities do not prove that a particular product produces educational gains. UNICEF recognizes potential learning and accessibility benefits, including for children with disabilities, while emphasizing children’s safety, privacy, development and well-being. Weigh a specific toy’s demonstrated features and controls rather than treating the presence of AI as a benefit in itself.

What is the current policy context?
UNICEF’s third edition of its AI-and-children guidance addresses ten requirements for child-centered AI, including safety, data privacy, fairness, transparency, accountability, development and well-being, and inclusion. UNICEF’s June 2026 policy brief separately discusses heightened risks from conversational and companion-like systems and compares regulatory approaches across six jurisdictions as of May 2026. Its recommendations reflect international best practice and are not a compliance checklist for national law.
In the UK, the Department for Business and Trade and the Office for Product Safety and Standards announced a call for evidence on 6 July 2026 to examine toy-safety rules and emerging risks, including AI-enabled toys. The announcement said the call would remain open until 6 October 2026; as of 4 October 2026, that closing date was still upcoming. This is a policy review, not evidence that a new rule has taken effect.
