Why Metro Exodus is the clearest story-first choice
The US PlayStation Store describes Metro Exodus as a first-person shooter that combines combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror. Its journey leaves the ruins of Moscow for a trek across post-apocalyptic Russia, using expansive non-linear levels rather than a purely linear sequence of firefights. That makes it the closest fit here if you want an FPS whose atmosphere and story share the spotlight with shooting.

There are both digital and physical routes, though availability depends on your region. The US Store lists PS4/PS5 support and Standard, Gold and Metro Saga Bundle editions. In a June 17, 2021 PlayStation.Blog post, 4A Games Executive Producer Jon Bloch said the PS5 upgrade was free for existing PS4 owners and that newcomers could buy the Complete Edition on disc. Check a local retailer’s stock and confirm exactly what its listing includes before buying.
What 4A Games says the PS5 upgrade adds
Bloch described the upgrade as targeting 60 FPS and 4K, with ray-traced lighting, faster loading using the SSD and 3D Audio support. Those are the developer’s launch-era specifications, not a current independent performance test. The same post describes DualSense haptics for weapon discharge, recoil, reloading, jams and equipment handling, plus adaptive triggers for certain weapons and interactions. These features may matter if controller feedback is part of your buying decision.

When S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is the better fit
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl puts more emphasis on survival pressure than on a guided cinematic journey. The US PlayStation Store calls it an “unforgiving FPS survival adventure” and describes a dark science-fiction open world where you scavenge for gear and resources, hunt for artifacts and make hard survival decisions. Pick it over Metro Exodus if you want to manage scarcity and explore a dangerous world, rather than prioritize a story-led shooter.
The US PS5 Store lists Standard, Deluxe and Ultimate editions. It also lists DualSense vibration and trigger-effect support, as well as PS5 Pro enhancement. These are listing claims; the available information does not establish independent current measurements of frame-rate stability, input latency or resolution behavior. The US listing displayed a $59.99 Standard Edition price when accessed October 4, 2026, but Store prices can change and differ by region, so check your local listing before purchase.

If content suitability matters, review the age rating and content descriptors on your local Store page. The US listing includes blood and gore, intense violence, strong language, and use of alcohol and tobacco; descriptors and ratings can vary by region.

Where Fallout 4 fits—and where it differs
Fallout 4 is a good match if the post-apocalyptic setting and open-world role-playing appeal to you as much as shooting does. PlayStation describes it as set in post-apocalyptic Massachusetts, with exploration, equipment upgrades and settlement construction using scavenged resources. Its defining difference for an FPS buyer is perspective: you can switch between first- and third-person views, so it is not a first-person-only shooter.

Deep Silver announced Metro 2039 for February 4, 2027, with February 5 in some territories, including Asia, Australia and New Zealand. PlayStation.Blog also describes it as a solo, story-driven FPS for PS5 and PS5 Pro. If you want a game now, it is not an alternative to a currently available purchase; if you are willing to wait for another story-led Metro, it is worth keeping in view.
Deep Silver has announced a 60 FPS Performance Mode with ray tracing for PS5 and PS5 Pro. The publisher says it will share more technical specifications and modes before release, so treat the feature and date as plans that could change, not as a tested result or a guarantee of final performance.
