Paper credentials generally cannot be imported through password managers’ digital-file import tools, so expect to enter them manually. Protect the manager account with a strong, unique password and multifactor authentication (MFA) if available.
What you need before you start
Choose a password manager that works on your devices and supports MFA for its own account. NIST recommends password managers for accounts that still use passwords: they can generate and securely store passwords and make unique passwords available across devices. NIST also says MFA can help protect an account even if its password is compromised. NIST’s password guidance explains both points.
- Set up the manager and its account recovery options before transferring anything. Recovery methods differ, so choose an option you understand and can access if you lose a device.
- Use a manager account password that is distinct from the passwords on the notes. It is the key to the vault, not another account password to reuse.
- Gather the notes somewhere private, where other people cannot read or photograph them.
How to put handwritten passwords in a password manager
- Make a private inventory. For each note, identify the service or website, username, password and any useful account detail. Do not send the notes or their contents to an online converter or an untrusted person.
- Create one login entry per account. Open the manager’s add-item or new-login option and enter the service name or website, username and password in the corresponding fields. Add only the notes needed to recognize or use the account.
- Type the credentials from the note. The documented import features in Bitwarden and 1Password are for compatible digital sources and files, not handwritten notes or automatic scanning. For paper-only credentials, creating entries manually is the practical route; the vendor guides do not claim a paper-import feature. See Bitwarden’s import guide and 1Password’s CSV guide.
- Check each record while the note is still available. Confirm the account name or website and username, then compare the entered password carefully. For important accounts, sign in using the manager’s autofill or copy function. Fix mistakes before you dispose of the source note. This is a practical verification precaution, not a vendor-prescribed paper-migration procedure.
Do I have to type passwords in one at a time? For passwords that exist only on paper, plan to create and fill in a record for each account. A digital import may help if you also have credentials in a supported password manager or file format, but it does not convert handwritten notes into entries.

Protect the password manager
Enable MFA for the manager account if it supports it, and keep its recovery options current. NIST says MFA can provide protection even if an account password is compromised. The exact recovery method is your choice; there is no single method prescribed by the sources here.
Harden important website accounts
For important services, enable MFA where offered; consider a passkey when the service supports one. If a password on a note was shared, reused, or exposed beyond your control, change it on the account to a unique password generated by the manager. Reuse matters because a password compromised at one site may put other accounts using the same password at risk, as NIST’s password guidance explains.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
A password manager does not prevent phishing. An attacker may still trick you into entering credentials on a fake site. Check that you are signing in to the real service; MFA or passkeys add protections but do not make it safe to trust a suspicious link.
When can you throw away your password notes?
Dispose of a note only after its entry has been checked and you have confirmed that you can use the manager for the account. For accounts that matter most, test a sign-in before discarding the paper. Choose a disposal method appropriate to your circumstances so the writing cannot be read by someone who finds the note. No single physical-destruction method is established for every household or threat.

Avoid creating an extra digital copy just to make the transfer easier. If you did create a plaintext file, such as a CSV, remove it after verifying the imported records and account for synced or backed-up copies. 1Password advises pausing backup software before making an unencrypted export and deleting that file after import; Bitwarden likewise tells users to delete exported files after import. Those are vendor instructions for digital exports, not a recommendation to transcribe paper notes into a file.

Digital imports are separate from moving handwritten passwords. Bitwarden documents imports from supported password managers and file formats through its web app, browser extension, desktop app and command-line interface; it also describes mobile direct import through FIDO Credential Exchange Protocol for supported app and operating-system combinations. Compatibility depends on the source and setup. Bitwarden says imports do not check for duplicates, so inspect the vault before repeating an import.

For a CSV migration into 1Password, the vendor’s guide requires consistent fields and rows, then asks you to map item types and columns. Delete the unencrypted CSV after importing it. Do not make a CSV of sticky-note passwords simply to use an import workflow meant for digital data.
NIST’s 2009 article on agency-wide password management said, “Using sticky notes to remember passwords is no way to keep your organization’s computer system secure.” That was an organizational security statement in a historical context, not a newly issued consumer rule; the practical goal here is to transfer the credentials, verify them and avoid leaving readable copies behind. Read the NIST article.
