Check exactly what the edition includes
Do not assume that “Deluxe,” “Gold,” “Ultimate,” “Complete,” or “Collector’s” has a consistent meaning across games. Open the specific product page and read its contents list before paying.

Look for whether the offer includes the base game, expansions or other playable DLC, and non-game extras such as a soundtrack, artbook, cosmetics, or virtual currency. Confirm that the base game is included and check whether you already own any of the listed content. An edition that costs more is not automatically better value: compare its current price with the specific items you would otherwise buy, and ignore extras you do not want.
For example, Valve’s Steamworks documentation describes a “Deluxe Edition” as a possible bundle of a base game and DLC or a related application; that is an example, not a universal definition. Steam also distinguishes between “Complete The Set” bundles, which charge for items you do not already own, and “Must Purchase Together” bundles, which can only be bought if you own none of their products. Will your PC run the game?
Find your computer’s specifications and compare them with the requirements on the exact game listing. Check each field rather than relying on a general impression of your PC’s age or model:
- Operating system: Confirm the required version and, if stated, system architecture.
- Processor (CPU): Compare the model or stated class with the listing.
- Memory (RAM): Check the required amount of system memory.
- Graphics (GPU): Compare the graphics card or processor, including any stated VRAM requirement. Laptop graphics may differ from similarly named desktop hardware.
- DirectX or other graphics API: Check the stated version when one is listed.
- Storage: Make sure enough space is available. If the seller gives separate download and installed-space figures, use the applicable figure for the stage you are checking.
- Other conditions: Look for requirements such as an internet connection, account, launcher, controller, or specific hardware feature.
Steamworks asks developers to identify supported operating systems and enter system requirements for their store pages. A game listing may show separate minimum and recommended configurations; these figures are specific to that game, not a general standard. Steamworks: System Requirements

“Minimum” and “recommended” are the publisher’s published requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution, or graphics preset. If your PC is close to minimum, or you rely on laptop or integrated graphics, check the publisher’s game-specific notes and recent reliable testing before buying. Compare refund rules at the checkout store
The storefront that processes payment matters. The rules below summarize official guidance for Steam, Epic Games Store, and Microsoft Store purchases as verified on October 7, 2026; they are not a complete statement of consumer law. Product type, location, payment route, and applicable law can affect eligibility.

Account for preorders, early access, and third-party keys
Steam preorders and early access
For a Steam preorder that cannot be played before release, the 14-day refund period begins on the release date. If the game is playable through Early Access or Advance Access before full release, that playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Steam Support: Pre-Purchase Refunds
Purchases from another seller
A key bought from a third-party seller is not covered by Steam’s refund policy, and Epic directs purchases made through third-party checkouts to that seller’s terms. Read the seller’s refund rules and verify that the key is for the intended platform and region before buying. The store policies described here do not establish the terms of any particular key seller.

Consider local consumer rights
Store policy is not the only possible source of rights. Epic says EU consumers generally have a statutory right of withdrawal, although it may ask the buyer to waive that right at purchase. Steam notes that some jurisdictions may provide additional rights for faulty games. The details depend on where you live and the circumstances of the purchase, so check the terms and official consumer guidance applicable to your location rather than treating a store’s general policy as a universal legal rule.
