A data-center digital twin is a digital representation of selected physical infrastructure—such as power distribution, cooling, racks, or an entire facility—connected to relevant data and models so teams can monitor conditions, analyze performance, or test scenarios. The term does not guarantee a live connection, a particular level of detail, or the ability to control equipment.
What makes a data-center model a digital twin?
NIST describes a digital twin as a computer model of a physical system that can support monitoring, anomaly detection, prediction, and recommendations. Its simplified definition is “the virtual (i.e., digital) representation of a physical or perceived real-world entity, concept, or notion.” Applied to a data center, the represented system may be electrical distribution, cooling, airflow, rack capacity, or connected facility and IT infrastructure. NIST’s digital-twins overview explains the broader concept, while its February 14, 2025 report on digital-twin cybersecurity and trust notes: “There is no agreed-upon definition for or consensus on the full potential of digital twins.”

That lack of consensus matters in practice: the label can refer to systems with very different scope and capabilities. An equipment inventory, an engineering simulation, a model updated with operational readings, and a facility-wide environment for what-if analysis are not interchangeable. A 3D view can help people understand layout, but appearance alone does not show that it is synchronized with the facility or can predict how it will behave.
What can a data-center digital twin do?
Plan electrical capacity, cooling, and airflow
Schneider Electric describes using simulations to examine electrical capacity, thermal behavior, airflow, and controls before construction of an AI factory. Its described software chain includes AVEVA information management, ETAP electrical simulation, NVIDIA Omniverse, and EcoStruxure IT Design CFD. This is the company’s account of its own approach, not an independent evaluation of results. Schneider Electric’s AI-factory simulation description gives the example.

Explore what-if scenarios
A connected model or linked engineering simulation can help teams consider questions before making physical changes: What happens if a workload shifts? Would a different thermal load exceed cooling capacity? How might a component failure affect connected power or cooling systems? These are scenario-analysis uses, not proof that every twin predicts outcomes accurately. The answer depends on the model, its assumptions, and how well it represents the facility.
Monitor rack power and temperature
In a Vertiv case study, Telefónica Germany integrated switched rack PDUs and environmental sensors into an existing digital-twin environment. The case reports monitoring of power, capacity, and temperature down to rack and outlet level, and describes cooling and energy optimization using real-time environmental data. Robert Krüger, an infrastructure solution architect at Telefónica in Germany, described “Seamless integration into Telefónica Germany’s digital twin environment with nationwide real-time monitoring of power, capacity, and temperature down to rack and outlet level.” This is a vendor case-study account, not a controlled comparison of energy or reliability outcomes. Study thermal behavior in engineering
Siemens describes a Taiwan Industrial Technology Research Institute use case in which Simcenter STAR-CCM+ was used to predict thermal behavior during the design of liquid-cooling systems for next-generation AI chips. It is an example of simulation for thermal engineering; it does not by itself establish that the model was continuously connected to live data-center operations. Vertiv presents operational digital twins as an evolving extension of design validation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Its discussion describes stress-testing power and cooling, comparing performance with nameplate ratings, and examining how failures could propagate through connected systems. A June 3, 2026 article says pilot projects were underway at Digital Realty’s research center in Virginia and the Stargate Project in Texas; it frames several operational applications as expectations for the technology as it matures, not as routine capabilities already deployed everywhere. Steve Blackwell, Vertiv’s vice president of engineering, says: “Operational modeling is becoming especially critical for modern AI facilities supporting high-density racks and variable AI workloads.” Vertiv’s article on operational digital twins discusses these applications.

What is the difference between a digital twin and a 3D model?
A 3D model represents geometry and layout. A digital twin may include that visualization, but its defining practical value is connecting a representation of a real system with relevant data or models to answer questions about its state or possible behavior. The connection might be manual, periodic, or operationally connected; the label alone does not reveal which. Likewise, a detailed visualization does not establish predictive capability, and a simulation does not necessarily use live facility data.
What data does a data-center digital twin need?
Start with the question the team needs to answer, then choose the physical scope, model detail, data sources, and update frequency that suit it. Depending on the purpose, useful inputs may include facility telemetry, rack power readings, temperature and environmental sensors, equipment and topology records, engineering models, and operational history. For example, the Telefónica case describes rack PDUs and environmental sensors feeding a broader twin environment.

Integration is often a substantial part of the work. NIST’s Building Digitization and Semantic Interoperability project identifies data spread across systems and lifecycle stages, limited access to standardized machine-readable data, and the cost and scaling difficulties of manual mapping. In a data center, inconsistent equipment identifiers, disconnected systems, stale asset records, or undocumented assumptions can make a polished view less useful or misleading.
How to assess a data-center digital-twin offering
Compare offerings against the decision they need to support rather than relying on the “digital twin” label. Ask vendors and internal teams for specific answers on these points:

- Scope: Does it represent one subsystem, a room, a site, or multiple sites?
- Purpose: Is it for static design validation, engineering simulation, monitoring, forecasting, or support for control decisions?
- Data connection: Which systems provide data, and how often is it updated? Ask for the actual cadence rather than assuming “real time.”
- Model quality: How closely does the model represent the decision at hand? What validation evidence, assumptions, and uncertainty are documented?
- Integration and governance: Can it interoperate with facility and IT systems? Who owns source data, protects access, and decides whether to act on recommendations?
- Operational fit: What deployment effort and staff expertise are required? What safety review is needed, and what are the consequences of a wrong prediction?
What are the limitations and risks?
A twin’s output is only as useful as its boundaries, source data, assumptions, and validation. Monitoring can report current measurements without reliably forecasting a failure. A simulation can test a scenario without being linked to live operations. An equipment visualization can document what is present without predicting system behavior. These are distinct capabilities, and a product should be evaluated against the one it actually provides.
Cybersecurity and trust also matter when a model draws from operational systems or informs decisions. NIST’s IR 8356 addresses these concerns alongside the unsettled terminology. Vendor materials and individual case studies establish that tools and deployments exist, but they do not guarantee energy savings, higher uptime, or lower costs at another facility.
