What to Do if Your Bank Closes or Freezes Your Account

If your bank or credit union blocks access to your account, first find out whether it has closed the account, temporarily restricted access, put a hold on one deposit, or acted on a court or agency order. Those situations have different remedies. Contact the institution through a verified channel, protect essential payments, and keep a record of every conversation. There is no universal deadline for a bank to release funds during a fraud or identity review.

Identify what has happened before you act

Use the bank’s exact explanation, not just a label such as “frozen.” Ask whether you can still make withdrawals or payments and whether the issue applies to the whole account or only a particular deposit.

Situation What it means What to establish
Account closure The institution has ended the account relationship. Effective closure date, final transaction history, remaining balance, and how the bank will return it.
Temporary restriction or review The account or some functions are unavailable while the bank reviews identity, activity, or another concern. Scope of the restriction, documents required, case number, and review date, if one is available.
Deposit hold The bank has delayed access to a particular deposit; this is not necessarily an account-wide freeze. Which deposit is held, the rule or reason applied, and its specific expected availability date.
Legal restraint A court or government process, such as a garnishment or levy, may require the institution to restrict funds. Issuing court or agency, order or case number, amount restrained, response deadline, and exemption procedure.

What to do immediately

  1. Contact the institution safely. Use the phone number on the back of your card, a secure banking message, or a branch. Do not rely on a number in an unsolicited text, email, or social-media post. The CFPB warns that impostors may pose as official contacts during service disruptions. Do not post account numbers or identity documents publicly.
  2. Ask focused questions and request the answers in writing. Find out the reason and scope of the action, what documents the bank needs, whether deposits or payments are pending, how much money is available, and how any remaining balance will be returned. Ask for the case number, the expected review date if there is one, and the bank’s appeal or complaint route. The bank may not disclose every detail of an investigation.
  3. Protect essential payments. Make a list of payroll and benefit deposits, rent, utilities, checks, subscriptions, and automatic debits due soon. Contact employers, benefit payers, and billers to redirect deposits or arrange another payment method. Ask the bank whether pending items will be paid or returned; returned checks and automatic payments can trigger fees or other consequences when an account closes.
  4. Preserve records. Save statements, notices, screenshots, deposit receipts, and messages. Record the date and time of each call, the representative’s name, the case number, and what you were told. If a transaction was unauthorized, report it promptly and follow the bank’s written dispute process.

If the bank closed your account

Can the bank close a checking account without your permission?

Yes. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says, “Yes, a bank or credit union can close your account without your permission.” Its answer, last reviewed August 30, 2024, gives examples such as writing bad checks, not having enough money to cover fees, and leaving an account dormant for a long time. Notice requirements can depend on state law, so do not assume the bank must always give advance notice—or that it never has to.

Get the closing details and settle the balance

Ask for the effective closure date, a final statement and transaction history, an itemized explanation of fees or any negative balance, and instructions for receiving money left in the account. If you dispute a fee, transaction, or balance calculation, send the dispute in writing and keep proof that the bank received it. If you owe a negative balance, ask how to resolve it and whether the institution has reported it to a checking-account reporting company.

A bank-initiated closure is different from one you requested yourself. In a separate situation, CFPB Circular 2023-02 says reopening an account after a customer requested its closure, in order to process a debit or deposit, can be an unfair practice under the Consumer Financial Protection Act. If that happened, keep evidence of your original closure request and the later account activity, then raise the issue through the bank’s complaint channel and the CFPB.

If access is frozen or a deposit is on hold

For a hold on a particular deposit

Ask which deposit is being held, the reason, and the date the funds are expected to be available. CFPB deposit-hold guidance, last reviewed August 28, 2026, says cash deposited in person, certain smaller checks deposited in person, electronic payments, and specified official checks generally must be available by the next business day. Longer holds may apply in circumstances such as a new account, repeated overdrafts, suspected fraud, an emergency, or a large check. The ordinary deposit-availability timetable does not by itself establish when a bank must release an account-wide freeze.

For an identity or fraud review

Use a verified bank channel to ask what identity or transaction records are required and how to submit them securely. Keep copies of what you send and ask for a case number and review date. A bank may not share all investigative details, and the available official guidance does not set one release deadline for every fraud-related or identity-related restriction.

If you did not authorize an electronic transfer

Notify the bank as soon as possible and follow up in writing if requested. CFPB guidance says the institution generally has ten business days to investigate after you give notice. Regulation E can limit consumer liability in certain situations, but the rules depend on factors including whether an access device was involved and when you reported the transfer. The outcome is not governed by one blanket liability limit for every case.

If a court order, garnishment, or levy is involved

Ask the bank for the issuing court or agency, the order or case number, the date it received the order, the amount restrained, any response deadline, the creditor’s identity, and instructions for asserting exemptions. A legal restraint is different from a bank’s own fraud review; state procedure and the type of order determine how to challenge it. Do not rely on a general form or deadline when the governing process is local and case-specific.

Federal rules require a financial institution to review an account that receives qualifying federal benefit payments by direct deposit and protect qualifying benefit amounts deposited in the preceding two months. FDIC compliance materials describe notices that identify the protected amount and explain that an account holder may assert further exemptions through the applicable local process. For funds beyond the automatically protected amount, contact the court, creditor, legal aid organization, or a lawyer promptly.

Will a closed checking account hurt your credit?

A checking-account closure, by itself, usually does not appear on the three major traditional credit reports. It may affect your ability to open another deposit account, however, because specialty checking-account reporting companies collect banking history. An unpaid negative balance or suspected fraud may be reported there. If a debt goes to collections, it may also affect traditional credit reports.

If a bank denies your application based on a report, its adverse-action notice should identify the reporting company. Request a free copy of that report, check it for errors, and dispute inaccurate information with both the reporting company and the bank or other business that supplied it. The CFPB says most negative information on checking-account reports cannot be included after seven years, subject to the governing rules.

How to find another account if you cannot open a standard one

A second-chance checking account may be an option when a bank turns you down because of banking history. These accounts are generally designed for people with prior account problems and may offer fewer services or lower fees than a standard account. Terms and eligibility differ by institution. Before applying, compare:

  • Monthly and transaction fees, plus any minimum opening deposit.
  • Eligibility rules and how the institution treats an old negative balance.
  • Overdraft policy.
  • Access to branches and ATMs.
  • Direct-deposit availability, check-writing, and bill-pay features.
  • Whether the institution reports account activity to specialty checking-account reporting companies.

How to escalate an unresolved problem

Start with the bank’s formal complaint process and keep the case number and its response. The CFPB accepts complaints about checking and savings accounts and other banking services. If the issue remains unresolved, the appropriate regulator depends on the institution: OCC guidance identifies its Customer Assistance Group as one possible contact for an issue involving a national bank, while a credit union or state-chartered bank may have a different regulator. Confirm the institution’s charter or regulator rather than assuming the OCC supervises it. A complaint may prompt a response, but it does not guarantee restored access or returned funds.
