Start with what they like, decide whether they want a challenge, a display piece or something to play with, then check the age mark, price and space the set will need.
Start with the recipient’s interests
Choose a theme connected to something the recipient already enjoys: a favorite story or fandom, architecture, plants, space, animals or another hobby. LEGO’s gift guidance suggests browsing by a person’s favorite themes and interests rather than choosing by size alone. LEGO’s gift ideas can help narrow the options.

If you are not confident about their preferences, a LEGO gift card lets them choose a set themselves on LEGO.com or in a LEGO Store. LEGO also offers a gift guide with advice for choosing a set.
Decide what they will do with the set
Large sets can be built for different reasons. Before choosing, consider whether the recipient is most likely to enjoy the process of assembling a substantial model, displaying the finished build, or using it in play. LEGO’s large-set category presents models for challenge, display and play, so “large” does not automatically mean “display-only.”

Think about how the recipient usually approaches building. Someone who enjoys a long, focused project may welcome a complex set; someone who prefers a quick build or interactive play may be happier with a different model, even within a theme they love.
Check the age mark and experience
Use the age recommendation on the specific box or product listing as a fit check, not as a substitute for knowing the recipient. LEGO describes its adult range as designed for adults aged 18 and older and as offering complex building challenges, but a large set is not necessarily an adult set or the right choice for every experienced builder. Check the individual set’s age mark and consider the person’s interest and patience for a detailed build.

Compare the exact set, not just its piece count
Piece count is a useful indication of scale, but it does not by itself tell you how long a set takes to build, how difficult it is, or whether it is good value. Compare the actual models and current prices, while giving greater weight to theme and intended use than to a pieces-per-dollar calculation.

Account for building and display space
A substantial build needs somewhere to be assembled, and a display model needs somewhere to stay afterward. Consider whether the recipient has a clear surface for building and, if they plan to display the finished model, a suitable shelf or other space.
There is no universal amount of room required for a large LEGO set. Check the individual product listing for the model’s dimensions if space may be tight; LEGO’s large-set and adult-gift category pages do not establish a single footprint for all sets.

A quick decision checklist
- Does the theme connect to something the recipient genuinely likes?
- Will they enjoy building it, displaying it, playing with it—or some combination?
- Does the specific set’s age recommendation suit the recipient?
- Does its current price fit your budget, without treating piece count as a guarantee of value?
- Is there room to build and keep the finished model?
- Do you understand the seller’s return terms, or would a gift card be a safer choice?
