How to Adjust the Air Gap on an Electromagnetic Brake

Electromagnetic brakes have no universal air-gap setting. Identify the exact model, isolate the equipment, measure with the specified gauge, and follow its adjustment and inspection procedure.

There is no universal air-gap setting or adjustment direction for electromagnetic brakes. Use the current manual for the exact brake and motor model: it specifies the target gap, measurement points, adjustment hardware, tightening torque, and safety checks. The examples below show why those details cannot be transferred between brake designs.

Before adjusting, identify the brake and its specification

Record the motor and brake nameplate details, then locate the applicable manufacturer manual and revision. A brake’s nominal gap is not necessarily its maximum permitted gap, and both can vary by design, frame size, and version. Do not choose a value based on a different brake that looks similar.

For example, Neri Motori’s AC brake table lists nominal gaps of 0.20–0.40 mm and maximum gaps of 0.40–0.60 mm across the frames shown. Its separate DC brake table lists nominal values of 0.15–0.60 mm and maximum values of 0.50–1.00 mm where specified. These are manufacturer- and design-specific figures, not general settings. See the Neri Motori AC brake specifications and Neri Motori DC brake specifications.

Make the equipment safe before opening the brake

Follow the machine and brake manufacturers’ safety procedures. Siemens’ safety-related brake instructions require switching off the drive power supply, establishing a no-voltage condition, preventing unintended startup, and posting a warning at the start switch before adjustment. WEG’s brake-motor procedure calls for disconnecting the motor, accessories, and brake from power. Apply the exact isolation and motion-prevention requirements for your installation; do not adjust an energized or moving machine.

Remove only the covers and release hardware identified in the manual. If the procedure calls for the brake to be torque-free, confirm that condition before measuring or adjusting. Siemens warns that oil or grease on friction surfaces can reduce braking effect, so keep those surfaces clean.

How to measure electromagnetic brake air gap

  1. Use a metric feeler gauge or thickness gauge suited to the gap specified in the model’s manual. WEG and Neri Motori both specify gauge-based measurement; a visual estimate is not a substitute.
  2. Place the gauge between the exact surfaces and at the measurement points named by the manufacturer. Do not assume all brakes are measured at the same location.
  3. Compare each reading with the manual’s nominal and maximum limits. Where the procedure requires uniformity, measure all designated points and verify that the readings meet the uniformity requirement.

If the gap is within the permitted range, follow the manual’s remaining inspection and reassembly steps rather than adjusting it unnecessarily. If it is outside the limit, use only the documented adjustment method. A metric feeler gauge set is useful when its range and resolution suit the model-specific measurement; the gauge itself does not establish the correct setting.

Adjust only with the specified hardware and procedure

Adjustment mechanisms differ, even among the examples in the manufacturer documentation. WEG uses sleeve bolts and fixing bolts, Neri Motori’s AC brake uses holding screws and nuts, its DC design uses threaded bushes, and Siemens’ safety-related brake procedure uses sleeve screws. These mechanisms, directions, and tightening requirements are not interchangeable.

Loosen, turn, and retighten only the hardware and in the sequence described for your exact model. Apply the manual’s specified torque, then remeasure at every required point. As a strictly model-specific example, WEG says that a quarter-turn reduces the air gap by approximately 0.45 mm on its brake sizes 25 and 31; that adjustment rate must not be applied to other sizes or brands. WEG’s brake-motor instruction manual separates procedures by size.

Examples from manufacturer instructions

Brake documentation Gap guidance Measurement and adjustment details Other relevant checks
WEG brake motors Use the manual’s size-specific specification; sizes 6–25 and 25/31 have separate procedures. Feeler gauge; designated sleeve bolts and fixing bolts. For sizes 25 and 31, a quarter-turn reduces the gap by approximately 0.45 mm. For the larger sizes, check that the gap is uniform at measuring points and inspect disc thickness as directed. Maintenance intervals depend on load, service conditions, and wear; the installation’s maintenance department determines the interval.
Neri Motori AC electromagnetic brake The listed AC frames have nominal values from 0.20 to 0.40 mm and maximum values from 0.40 to 0.60 mm. Thickness gauge; holding screws and nuts. The gap S must remain between the table’s Snom and Smax values. Use the AC table and procedure for the applicable frame; the page does not establish an interval for every installation.
Neri Motori DC electromagnetic brake The listed DC frames have nominal values from 0.15 to 0.60 mm and maximum values from 0.50 to 1.00 mm where specified. Thickness gauge; threaded bushes. Do not transfer the AC mechanism or values to this design. Use the DC table and procedure for the applicable frame; the page does not establish an interval for every installation.
Siemens safety-related brake Use the table for the specific brake in the 08/2024 operating instructions. Feeler gauge; the instructions describe loosening brake fastening screws, adjusting sleeve screws, and tightening fasteners. The applicable torque and gap come from that manual. The procedure includes brake-function and release-dimension checks in addition to adjustment.

Remeasure, inspect, and return the brake to service

After adjustment, tighten the designated fasteners to the specified torque and repeat the measurements. If a component has reached its manual-defined wear limit, replace it as directed rather than trying to compensate by exceeding the allowed adjustment. Restore seals, covers, fan, and manual-release parts as required, then perform the prescribed brake-function and commissioning checks before returning the machine to service.

For Siemens’ safety-related brake, follow the additional checks in the 08/2024 operating instructions. WEG’s maintenance and adjustment requirements are in its brake-motor manual. If the exact model, applicable limit, required torque, or safe procedure cannot be confirmed, do not guess; obtain the correct manufacturer documentation or qualified service assistance.
