Before your first race, check the selected event’s schedule and stadium or track rules: the afternoon program may begin hours before the evening show, FanFest may require separate admission, and entry rules vary by venue. The main distinction is simple: Supercross is raced on a custom-built stadium track; Pro Motocross is raced outdoors on natural terrain.
Supercross and motocross: what’s the difference?
Supercross (often abbreviated SX) is an indoor stadium format on a purpose-built track. Pro Motocross, often called MX, takes place outdoors on natural terrain. The different courses shape the racing: Supercross emphasizes technical precision, consistency and athleticism, while Pro Motocross showcases speed and endurance, according to the Monster Energy AMA Supercross FAQ.

The FAQ describes the 450 class as the premier class and the 250 class as a showcase for emerging riders. Supercross is part of the path to the SMX World Championship; “SMX” refers to SuperMotocross. A typical Supercross season runs 17 rounds, usually from January through early May, though the dates and schedule change by season.

For brief context, the American Motorcyclist Association says the first professional motocross race on a temporary track at Daytona International Speedway took place in 1971. The stadium format followed the next year, beginning at the Los Angeles Coliseum. See the AMA’s historical overview.

What happens on race day?
Practice and qualifying come before the night show
Do not assume the advertised evening showtime is when all activity starts. Supercross practice and qualifying begin in the afternoon, and FanFest overlaps with qualifying in many markets. The schedule varies by event, so use the selected round’s official event page to check the date, local start times, doors and FanFest hours.
Qualifying leads to the main events
Qualifying heats help determine who advances to the main events. The series FAQ describes each 450- and 250-class main event as featuring 22 riders. It lists a 450 main as 20 minutes plus one lap and a 250 main as 15 minutes plus one lap. Those are race durations, not a promise that the whole event will fit into a particular number of hours; the full program includes other sessions and transitions.

Some rounds use the Triple Crown format
At a Triple Crown round, riders compete in three main events, and the overall winner is determined by best average finish. That is an event-specific format, not the standard program at every round. Check the selected event’s listing to see whether it is a Triple Crown.

Not necessarily. FanFest is a separate pre-race experience, and the organizer says guests age two and older need both event admission and FanFest access to attend both portions. Offerings can include qualifying viewing, photo opportunities, sponsor activities, merchandise, family activities and access to riders and teams; food and vendor areas are available in select markets. Rider access or a particular activity should not be treated as guaranteed.

- IMPACT PROTECTION: Durable polycarbonate lens provides excellent protection against dust, debris, and flying objects during off-road riding
- VENTILATION SYSTEM: Strategic air vents prevent fogging and maintain clear vision while riding in challenging conditions
- SECURE FIT: Adjustable elastic strap with non-slip silicone ensures goggles stay firmly in place during intense riding sessions
- COMFORT FEATURES: Triple-layer foam padding creates a comfortable seal around your face while absorbing sweat
- LENS DESIGN: Wide-angle view with distortion-free optics allows maximum visibility of the terrain ahead
Availability and procedures vary by round. The FAQ reviewed says FanFest is not offered in Detroit and notes an Indianapolis exception to the empty-can admission offer. Check the chosen round’s FanFest information and event page for current details, including whether each person in your group needs separate access.
What should you check before buying or packing?
- Confirm the event schedule. Open the official event page for the round you plan to attend. Check the date, local schedule, doors, practice and qualifying times, and any FanFest hours or event-specific notes.
- Check the venue’s entry policy. Supercross defers to the individual stadium’s rules. Read its current customer-relations guidance for bags, cameras, outside food and drink, and other restricted or permitted items.
- Verify ticket terms and age rules. The series FAQ says children age two and older need event tickets, but local public-event rules may require a ticket at any age. Confirm the policy with the venue and ticket seller. Exchanges, cancellations and refunds are generally unavailable according to the FAQ; postponed, rescheduled or cancelled events may be treated differently, so read the seller’s current terms before purchasing.
- Plan your route and parking. Transport, parking and access arrangements are venue-specific. Use the stadium or track’s current information rather than assuming there is a universal arrangement.
- Dress for walking and sitting through a long program. Comfortable clothing and practical shoes are sensible for venue steps and walking. Hearing protection is an optional comfort measure, particularly for children; the official pages reviewed do not state a spectator sound-level measurement or require ear protection.
- Recheck close to your visit. Event schedules, FanFest availability, ticket inventory and entry rules can change. Check the event and venue pages again before travelling.
Which kind of race should a first-time spectator choose?
| What to compare | Supercross | Pro Motocross |
|---|---|---|
| Setting and course | Stadium; custom-built track. | Outdoors; natural terrain. |
| Day structure | Afternoon practice and qualifying precede the evening show; FanFest may overlap qualifying. | Outdoor national event; check the event’s own schedule and weather or venue arrangements. |
| FanFest | Offered in many markets, with event-specific exceptions and access procedures. | Not established as a standard feature by the sources cited here; check the particular event. |
| Practical logistics | Stadium rules, transport and parking depend on the venue. | Track arrangements, access, transport and weather planning depend on the event. |
If a stadium setting and a defined evening show appeal to you, Supercross may be the easier format to plan around, but its afternoon sessions and optional FanFest can make for a much longer visit. For either format, compare the actual event schedule, entry rules and transport arrangements before you choose.
