Configure and test SSH before you block Telnet: confirm that SSH reaches the intended management interface, authenticates the intended account, and grants the right access. Then deny Telnet on every applicable remote-access line or disable the device’s separate Telnet service, and test that a fresh Telnet connection is refused. The commands depend on the device family and software release; Cisco IOS/IOS XE examples are not universal.
Why replace Telnet with SSH?
Telnet is an older remote-terminal protocol. Its management traffic is sent in cleartext, which can expose sensitive information; Cisco recommends SSH for device management. Telnet’s protocol is specified in RFC 854, while Cisco discusses the security difference in its SSH configuration guidance and IOS hardening guidance.

Replacing Telnet is not just a client-side change. A device acting as an SSH server needs platform support, host identity and keys, a working authentication configuration, and a management interface or remote-access line that permits SSH. The available commands, algorithms, and defaults vary by model and release.

Before changing remote access
- Record the vendor, exact model and software release, management address, remote-access line range, and current local-account or AAA behavior.
- Consult the command reference for that exact platform. Cisco notes that SSH crypto support depends on platform, release, and licensing; IOS syntax should not be pasted into NX-OS, Catalyst small-business CLI, Junos, or another vendor’s CLI.
- Preserve the current configuration through your organization’s normal process. Keep an approved recovery route, such as local console access where appropriate, in case remote access fails.
- Confirm which administrator subnets or jump hosts should reach the management plane. If you use a source access list, make sure it permits those sources before tightening the rule.
Cisco cautions that configuration commands can affect a live network. Its IOS/IOS XE SSH guide also describes platform-specific support and access restrictions.

- 【Flexible Port Configuration】1 Gigabit SFP WAN Port + 1 Gigabit WAN Port + 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus1 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to four WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【Increased Network Capacity】Maximum number of associated client devices – 150,000. Maximum number of clients – Up to 700.
- 【Integrated into Omada SDN】Omada’s Software Defined Networking (SDN) platform integrates network devices including gateways, access points & switches with multiple control options offered – Omada Hardware controller, Omada Software Controller or Omada cloud-based controller(Contact TP-Link for Cloud-Based Controller Plan Details). Standalone mode also applies.
- 【Cloud Access】Remote Cloud access and Omada app brings centralized cloud management of the whole network from different sites—all controlled from a single interface anywhere, anytime.
- 【SDN Compatibility】For SDN usage, make sure your devices/controllers are either equipped with or can be upgraded to SDN version. SDN controllers work only with SDN Gateways, Access Points & Switches. Non-SDN controllers work only with non-SDN APs. For devices that are compatible with SDN firmware, please visit TP-Link website.
Configure SSH and authentication first
On Cisco IOS/IOS XE, the following abbreviated example shows the general sequence: set a hostname and domain, configure an account or AAA, enable SSH version 2, generate the host key, and permit SSH on the relevant VTY lines. Replace every placeholder and confirm the syntax against the device’s release documentation.
configure terminal
hostname <device-name>
username <admin> privilege 15 secret <strong-secret>
ip domain name <domain>
ip ssh version 2
crypto key generate rsa general-keys modulus <platform-approved-size>
line vty 0 <last-vty>
login local
transport input ssh
end
This example uses local login; environments using centralized AAA need the matching authentication configuration instead. Use an RSA key size supported by the device and your security policy. Cisco’s hardening guidance uses 2048 bits or stronger as examples and notes that 4096 bits may be an option when supported and performance impact is acceptable. Do not treat older, weaker key examples as a current baseline.

Cisco’s guidance says, “When configuring SSH, ensure that SSHv2 is enabled, as it provides stronger encryption and significantly better security than SSHv1.” See Cisco’s SSH configuration guide for IOS/IOS XE details, including local or AAA authentication, key setup, and VTY access controls.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSome device families use separate server controls
On Cisco Catalyst 1200, the CLI guide documents ip ssh server to enable its SSH server and no ip telnet server to disable its Telnet server. These are family-specific commands, not substitutes to try on an unrelated device. See the Catalyst 1200 CLI guide for that platform’s syntax.

- This router does not include a built-in cable modem. A separate cable modem (with coax inputs) is required for internet service.
- Connects to your existing cable modem and replaces your WiFi router. Compatible with any internet service provider up to 1Gbps including cable, satellite, fiber, and DSL
- Plug in computers, game consoles, streaming players, and more with 4 x 1G Ethernet ports
Test SSH before blocking Telnet
- From an authorized management host or jump host, open an SSH connection to the device’s management address using the intended account.
- Confirm the session reaches the expected device, authentication succeeds, and the account receives the intended privilege level.
- Check SSH status using the platform’s commands. On Cisco IOS/IOS XE,
show ip sshreports SSH status and configuration, whileshow sshshows active SSH connections; output and command availability vary by platform. - If management access is source-restricted, test from each approved subnet or jump host. Cisco documents applying an access list to VTY lines; verify permitted sources before relying on the restriction.
Do not remove the existing Telnet path until the SSH session has been proven from the management location you actually use. Cisco’s SSH guide documents these status checks and VTY controls.
Block Telnet and verify it is refused
Use the enforcement mechanism documented for the device. For Cisco IOS/IOS XE, transport input ssh under every applicable VTY line allows SSH and rejects non-SSH remote terminal connections. Cisco advises applying the SSH-only setting to all available VTY lines; leaving a line outside the policy can leave Telnet accessible.

On Catalyst 1200, disable the separate Telnet service with no ip telnet server. Other product families may use different commands or controls. If the platform offers both a service toggle and line-level transport policy, follow its documentation to determine whether both are appropriate.
- Establish a fresh SSH connection and confirm login still works.
- From an authorized test host, attempt a new Telnet connection to the management address. Confirm the connection is refused or the service is unavailable.
- Inspect all remote-access lines and any separate Telnet-server setting to ensure no alternate path remains enabled.
- Save the configuration using the platform’s normal process, then validate access again after reconnecting or during a controlled maintenance check.
There is no universal save command or change sequence across network devices. Follow the device’s own configuration and change-control procedures.

SSH commands or key generation are rejected
Check whether the software image, release, and licensing support cryptographic SSH features. On IOS/IOS XE, verify that the required hostname and domain settings and host keys are present. Requirements differ by platform.
SSH connects but authentication fails
Check whether the VTY policy uses local login or AAA, whether the intended account is active, and whether the configured authentication method matches your access system.
The client cannot negotiate an SSH session
Compare the algorithms supported by the client and server and check their software versions. Cisco notes that supported ciphers and HMAC algorithms can vary by release.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Telnet still connects
Check every VTY or management line for a permissive transport policy, and check for a separate Telnet service toggle where the platform provides one. IOS VTY controls and Catalyst 1200’s server toggle are distinct mechanisms.
Do not delete SSH keys as a shortcut
On Cisco devices, deleting RSA keys can disable the SSH server and may affect other uses such as certificates, CA functions, or IPsec. Understand the consequences before changing host keys; see Cisco’s SSH troubleshooting guidance.
