Guaranteed or rapid returns, vague explanations, impersonation, and pressure through unsolicited messages or social media are warning signs—not proof by themselves, but reasons to stop and investigate.
What makes a crypto presale suspicious?
A presale may be presented as an early chance to buy a token before public trading. Scammers can imitate that pitch, impersonate a real company, or use a polished website and active group chat to create credibility. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns about investment offers promising fast, easy money or guaranteed returns, making large claims without explaining how the investment works or where funds go, and pretending a known company is issuing a token.

- Guaranteed or unusually rapid returns: No legitimate pitch can make an uncertain investment outcome certain.
- Unclear details: Be cautious if you cannot understand what the project does, how the token is meant to work, or where your payment goes.
- Impersonation: A familiar company name, logo, or public figure does not establish that the company or person is involved.
- Unsolicited pressure: Treat messages, social-media promotions, or approaches through online dating as untrusted until independently verified.
- Testimonials and hype in place of evidence: A busy chat, celebrity endorsement, or professional-looking site is not independent verification.
The FTC reported that consumers said they lost more than $1 billion to cryptocurrency fraud between January 2021 and March 2022; $575 million of reported losses in that period involved bogus cryptocurrency investment opportunities. Those are historical reported losses across crypto fraud—not a current annual estimate or a presale-specific figure. FTC, 2022.
How to check a presale before paying
- Verify the issuer independently. Search the company or person and the token name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Check established media if the offer claims a known company issued the token. The FTC recommends these searches; results can expose warning signs, but a lack of complaints does not prove safety. FTC consumer advice, May 2022.
- Confirm that the claimed connection is real. Use contact details or official channels you find independently, rather than links or phone numbers supplied in the pitch. A project’s own channel can confirm what it claims to represent, but is not independent proof that the investment is sound.
- Look for a comprehensible explanation. If the offer cannot clearly explain the project, token, payment destination, and how the investment is supposed to work, do not fill in the gaps with assumptions.
- Do not let urgency replace due diligence. Stop if you are being pushed to act immediately or to keep the offer secret. A deadline does not verify an issuer or make a transaction safe.
- Choose deliberately. Declining is a valid decision. If information remains unclear, investigate further without sending funds. If you still choose to proceed, use only money you can afford to lose; that does not make the offer legitimate or reduce the risk of wallet compromise.
Protect your wallet and check every signature
Crypto is held through wallets, and a mistaken transfer, lost password, exchange failure, or stolen or compromised wallet may leave no practical way to recover funds. The FTC cautions that “Cryptocurrency payments typically are not reversible.” FTC consumer advice, May 2022.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Keep recovery words private. Never share a wallet’s recovery phrase or private keys with a presale team, support account, or anyone who contacts you. Anyone who obtains them may be able to control the wallet.
- Check links and addresses independently. Do not rely on a link or payment address simply because it appeared in a message, post, or group chat.
- Read the transaction before signing. Check the destination, asset, amount, and requested permissions. Do not approve a transaction if you cannot understand what it does.
- Check network and token compatibility. Confirm that the wallet and network support the asset and transaction you intend to use; a mismatch can lead to loss or an unusable transfer.
What a hardware wallet can—and cannot—do
A hardware wallet is a physical device used to store private keys. For example, Trezor identifies its Safe 3 as a hardware wallet (Trezor product page). A device may support private-key storage, but it does not authenticate a presale, validate the project’s claims, or guarantee that a transaction you approve is safe. Compare any wallet by the networks and tokens it supports, its recovery method, device security, and how clearly it displays transaction details. The available information does not establish one wallet as safest; confirm current availability and compatibility before choosing a specific device.
What to do if you suspect a presale scam
- Stop interacting. Do not send more funds, share recovery information, or sign additional transactions in an attempt to unlock or retrieve money.
- Preserve details. Keep transaction records, wallet addresses, messages, emails, website addresses, and other communications. Do not delete material that may help explain what happened.
- Report the suspected fraud. The FTC advises reporting cryptocurrency scams to the FTC, the CFTC, the SEC, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and the exchange used to send the funds, as applicable. FTC consumer advice, May 2022.
- Be wary of recovery pitches. A promise to retrieve funds is not proof that a person or service can do so. Reporting does not guarantee reimbursement, and a sender typically cannot reverse a blockchain payment.
What U.S. crypto guidance does—and does not—establish
U.S. regulatory guidance should not be treated as a shortcut for deciding whether an individual presale is legitimate. On March 17, 2026, the SEC described a taxonomy including digital commodities, collectibles, tools, stablecoins, and digital securities. Its interpretation addresses how a crypto asset that is not itself a security may become subject to, or cease to be subject to, an investment contract; it does not give every token or presale one blanket legal treatment. SEC, March 17, 2026.
