When you SSH into a server, your client first establishes a protected connection and checks the server’s identity. It then authenticates your user account and opens the service you requested—usually an interactive shell, but possibly a remote command or another SSH capability.
What happens when you run ssh?
An SSH login is a sequence of distinct protocol steps, not a single act of “logging in.” The SSH architecture separates transport, user authentication, and the services carried over the connection. The standards describe this layered design in RFC 4251.

- The client connects to the server. SSH commonly uses TCP/IP as its underlying transport. Establishing that network connection only creates a path between the client and server; it does not yet mean the SSH login has succeeded. RFC 4253 describes the transport layer.
- They negotiate protocol options. Client and server exchange information about supported capabilities and agree on a key-exchange method and cryptographic algorithms. The exact choices vary with the software and its configuration; there is no single cipher or key-exchange method used by every SSH connection.
- They establish session keys and check the server’s identity. The key exchange establishes shared keys for the session and uses the server’s host key to authenticate the server. The client needs a trustworthy way to associate that host key with the intended server, such as a previously stored mapping or a trusted host certificate.
- The transport becomes protected. The transport provides confidentiality and integrity protection. In other words, it is designed to keep session data private and detect unauthorized changes in transit. OpenSSH’s manual describes the protocol layers and its transport capabilities in its official manual index.
- The client authenticates the user. After the protected transport is established, the client attempts to authenticate the requested account. Depending on client and server policy, methods may include a password or public key. The authentication protocol is specified in RFC 4252.
- The client requests a service. After authentication succeeds, SSH can open a session channel for an interactive shell or a remote command. It can also carry other traffic, including forwarded connections. The connection protocol allows multiple logical channels to share one authenticated, encrypted connection; see RFC 4254.
- The session and connection close. When the requested command or session ends and its channels close, the SSH connection can close as well. Closing a terminal does not necessarily stop unrelated processes already running on the server.
Why server identity and user login are separate
A host-key check answers, “Is this the server I intended to reach?” User authentication answers, “May this account access it?” Passing the first check does not grant account access; successful account authentication does not, by itself, establish that the client reached the intended server. RFC 4251 explains that the server host key is used during key exchange to verify that the client is talking to the correct server.
What a first-connection prompt means
On a first connection, an SSH client may show a host-key fingerprint and ask whether to trust it. The prompt is an opportunity to verify the server’s identity, not proof that the displayed key belongs to the expected server. When possible, compare the fingerprint with one obtained through a trusted, separate channel before accepting it. RFC 4251 discusses host-key trust and the risks of failing to verify server identity in its security considerations.

What SSH protects—and what it does not
The order matters: SSH establishes a confidential, integrity-protected transport and authenticates the server before the user-authentication protocol runs over it. Saying only that “SSH encrypts your password” misses the host-identity check, the protected channel, and the fact that authentication can use methods other than a password.
Encryption protects traffic in transit; it does not make a compromised client or server trustworthy. SSH also cannot establish that a server is the right one if the client has no trustworthy way to verify its host key.

How the authentication and trust choices differ
There is no universally best SSH setup independent of policy and deployment. Authentication choices concern how a user proves account access; host-identity choices concern how the client knows which server it has reached.
| Decision | Option | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| User authentication | Password | The client and server must permit password authentication under their configured policies. |
| User authentication | Public key | The account and server must be configured for public-key authentication. The protocol ties the proof to the session established during key exchange; see RFC 4252. |
| Server identity | Local host-key mapping | The client uses a stored association between a server name and its host key. The association needs a trustworthy initial verification and should be checked if the key changes unexpectedly. |
| Server identity | Trusted host-key certificate | The client relies on a trusted host-key certificate authority to validate server identities. |
Which combination fits depends on what users and administrators can provision, the server’s authentication policy, and how host keys or certificates are distributed and managed. RFC 4251 also discusses smartcards or similar technology as one possible way to make private-key passphrase protection enforceable; such hardware is optional, not a requirement for SSH.

What can happen after login
An SSH connection is not limited to a terminal. Once user authentication succeeds, the connection protocol can carry an interactive session, a remote command, or other channel traffic such as forwarding. The requested service determines what the user sees; the underlying protected SSH connection can support multiple logical channels.
