If the television is a true monochrome set, no picture setting, antenna change, or streaming device can make its screen display color. You need a color-capable television. If the set is meant to display color but the picture has turned black and white, troubleshoot the source and signal path before considering a repair.
First, identify which kind of problem you have
A black-and-white picture does not automatically mean the television itself is monochrome. A color-capable set can show a monochrome image when the source, selected input, connections, settings, or television hardware are not delivering color.

| What you have | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A physically monochrome television | The display cannot produce color, even if it receives a compatible signal. | Use a color-capable television to watch color programming. |
| A color-capable television showing monochrome | The display can produce color, but something in the current signal path or the set may be preventing it. | Check the source, input, connections, and model-specific settings; seek service guidance if the fault remains. |
If you are unsure whether the set is a color model, check its model number and documentation. You can also test another known color source: a picture that is monochrome only from one source or input points to a different issue than a picture that remains monochrome across sources.
If the television is a true monochrome set
Replacing it with a color-capable television is the straightforward way to view color. A streaming box or other external device can provide a video signal, but it cannot give a monochrome display the physical ability to reproduce color. An antenna change likewise does not add color-producing capability.

This distinction has a history in U.S. television. The FCC adopted an analog television standard in 1941 for sets that displayed only black and white. The later color standard was designed to remain compatible with those sets, so a monochrome television could receive a color-era broadcast as a black-and-white picture; receiving the signal did not turn the set into a color television. Media Essentials, 5th edition
The first mass-produced electronic color television, RCA’s CT-100, was priced at $1,000 or more in the historical account in Media Essentials, 5th edition. That is a historical figure, not a guide to current television prices.

If a color TV suddenly shows black and white
Use this sequence to narrow down the fault without assuming that every television uses the same menu labels.
- Test a known color source. Try a different program, channel, or connected device that should produce color. If only one source is monochrome, focus on that source or its connection.
- Select the correct input. Confirm that the television is displaying the input connected to the source. If the set has more than one input, try the other appropriate input rather than relying on a generic menu path.
- Check the source device and connections. Verify that the source is configured for its intended video output and that its cables or connectors are firmly seated at both ends. If possible, test with another known-good source or connection.
- Consult the exact TV manual for picture settings. Check for a color or saturation control and confirm it has not been reduced to zero, but use the menu names and instructions for your model. The available guidance does not establish one universal menu path for modern televisions.
- Use model-specific service information if the picture is still monochrome. If multiple known color sources remain black and white after the external checks, the fault may be within the television. Contact a qualified repair service or follow the manufacturer’s service guidance.
Do not open a CRT television or attempt internal high-voltage repairs based on a general troubleshooting guide. Specialist CRT repair references discuss color faults, but they are not a safe, model-specific repair procedure for consumers. Sci.Electronics.Repair FAQ

Why an adapter is not a fix for a monochrome display
An adapter may change how a signal is connected or converted; it does not change what the television’s display hardware is capable of showing. The relevant question is whether the television was built as a color-capable set. If it was, investigate the signal path and settings. If it was built only for monochrome, use a color television rather than searching for a generic conversion box.
