Micro systems technology (MST) is the design and integration of miniature systems that combine functions such as sensing, actuation, electronic processing, mechanical movement, fluid handling, or optics. The defining feature is not simply that a device is small: it is that multiple relevant functions are engineered to work together as a compact system.
What does micro systems technology mean?
MST is an interdisciplinary way of building miniature functional systems. It brings together fields including microelectronics, micromechanics, microsensors, microactuators, microfluidics, and microoptics. In a microsystem, components such as sensors, actuators, and data processors interact to perform a task; its functional elements may be measured in micrometers. A 1994 IEEE conference contribution cataloged by the University of Twente describes the field as a convergence of precision engineering, microelectronics, sensors and actuators, and molecular engineering, and emphasizes the importance of designing the system integrally.

That integration distinguishes MST from miniaturization alone. Making one component smaller does not by itself make a system a microsystem. The relevant question is whether its small-scale components and functions are designed to work together to do a job.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and MST overlap substantially, but the terms are not universally interchangeable. MEMS usually refers to systems combining mechanical elements with electrical or electronic functions, often fabricated on silicon. A thesis on MEMS terminology notes that the field has also been called “Micro Systems Technology” in Europe and “micromachines” in Japan. The terminology varies by source and engineering community.

MST can also be used as a broader framing for integrated microsystems that include functions beyond mechanical-electrical ones, such as microfluidics or microoptics. In short, MEMS is a common overlapping category; MST can describe the broader integration of miniature functions.
What can a microsystem combine?
A microsystem brings together only the functions needed for its purpose. Depending on the device, that may include:

- Optical functions: working with light as part of the system.
Technical overviews describe microelectronics, micromechanics, microfluidics, and microoptics as contributing disciplines, with sensors, actuators, and processors interacting in the resulting system. The combination depends on the function being built.

Common examples of miniature devices in this area include accelerometers, gyroscopes, pressure sensors, biosensors, micropumps, and microvalves. They illustrate different functions rather than defining an exhaustive list. For instance, an accelerometer senses acceleration, while a micropump moves fluid.

How does a microsystem move from idea to product?
A historical European Commission CORDIS project record describes a general development sequence for complete MST products. It is useful as a lifecycle outline, not as a claim that every current project follows identical stages. The sequence is:
- Concept: define the task and the functions the system needs.
- Feasibility study: assess whether the proposed system can be realized.
- Design: plan how the components and functions will work together.
- Prototype: build an initial version for evaluation.
- Test: check the prototype against its intended function.
- Manufacture: move from development toward production.
What MST does not tell you
MST is a field and design approach, not a single device specification or a guarantee of a particular size, performance, or application. The term alone does not say how a system is made, how well it works, or whether it meets a particular standard. The sources cited here do not establish a formal international standard definition, nor do they provide a current market-size or adoption figure.
