A falling technology stock is not automatically a sell. Decide by checking the investment’s original purpose, your time horizon, risk capacity, position size, portfolio mix, taxes and whether the company’s business thesis still works. A percentage loss by itself cannot tell you whether to hold, trim, replace or sell.
The steps below are general educational information, not individualized investment or tax advice. Tax treatment depends on your country, account type and facts; confirm current rules with the IRS or a qualified tax professional.

Start with a pause, not a trade
Volatile sessions make a recent loss feel like an instruction. FINRA advises investors to return to their plan, stay diversified and avoid impulse decisions when markets or economic conditions change. Before placing an order, write down the facts that can be changed by an emotional decision.

- Security name and ticker, purchase dates, share count and cost basis.
- Account type: taxable brokerage, individual retirement account or another retirement arrangement.
- Current market value and its percentage of the whole portfolio.
- Why you bought it: expected growth, income, a particular product cycle, or broad technology exposure.
- Any cash need and the date by which the money may be required.
- Your intended asset and sector allocation before the price fell.
Use the documented facts to separate two questions: “Has the price moved against me?” and “Is this still an appropriate investment for my plan?” They are related, but they are not the same question.

Check concentration and diversification
A technology loss can reveal a portfolio problem rather than a single-stock problem. Investor.gov describes diversification as spreading money among investments and sectors—“Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” A portfolio can become concentrated when one company rises sharply, when several holdings depend on the same technology theme, or when a narrowly focused fund is mistaken for a diversified one.
Measure your actual exposure
- Add the current value of every technology company, technology-focused fund and business whose results are closely tied to the same technology trend.
- Divide that total by the portfolio value to find the current technology weighting.
- Look through mutual funds and exchange-traded funds for their largest holdings and sector weights. A fund with many tickers may still be narrowly concentrated.
- Compare the result with the allocation you originally intended, not with an arbitrary percentage seen online.
Include indirect overlap. For example, owning a semiconductor manufacturer, a chip-equipment company and a fund dominated by both may create more exposure to one economic cycle than the account statement suggests. Concentration is a portfolio-level risk, so a decision about one holding should account for all related holdings.
Test the business thesis and your time horizon
Ask whether the reason for owning the security remains true. Review the company’s latest filings and disclosures for changes in revenue drivers, cash generation, debt, competition, customer dependence and management plans. A lower share price does not repair a deteriorating business. Conversely, a temporary market repricing does not by itself disprove a sound thesis.

- What specific outcome did you expect when you bought?
- What evidence would show that the thesis is wrong?
- Has that evidence appeared, or has only the market price changed?
- Would you buy the same position today at its current size and risk?
- Does the company still fit your risk budget if the price falls further?
Then match the position to the time horizon. Asset allocation should reflect both how soon you need the money and how much loss you can financially and emotionally absorb. A near-term tuition, home purchase or emergency reserve need can justify reducing volatile exposure even if the company’s long-run outlook is attractive. A long horizon gives more time, but it does not make a weak, unsuitable or oversized company a hold.

Compare the four practical choices
There is no universal “right” response. Compare each action against your goal, risk capacity, portfolio mix, business thesis, taxes, transaction costs, liquidity and ability to tolerate volatility.
| Choice | When it can fit | Main benefit | Main risk or cost | Checks before acting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hold | The thesis remains intact, the valuation is within your discipline and the position fits your risk budget. | Maintains exposure to a possible recovery or future growth. | Leaves you exposed to further losses and concentration. | Confirm the current weighting, cash needs and evidence supporting the thesis. |
| Trim | The position is too large, but you still want some exposure. | Reduces concentration while retaining potential upside. | Creates taxes and trading costs; a rebound may occur after the sale. | Calculate the post-trade weighting and estimated tax cost. |
| Replace with broader exposure | You want technology participation without relying on one company or narrow theme. | Can reduce single-company risk and simplify diversification. | A supposedly broad fund may still be concentrated; switching can realize gains or losses. | Inspect holdings, sector weights, fees, liquidity and overlap with what you already own. |
| Sell and consider a tax loss | The thesis no longer fits, the position is unsuitable, or a taxable-account loss can be used within a wider plan. | Removes unwanted risk and may help offset taxable gains. | The stock can rebound; allocation changes, tax rules and wash-sale/reporting issues require care. | Model the replacement allocation and obtain tax guidance before trading. |
“Sell because it fell” is not a complete rationale. “Hold because it will come back” is not one either. The defensible choice is the one that best fits the documented plan after these checks.
Rebalance deliberately
Rebalancing restores an intended allocation after market movements change it. It may involve selling an overweight technology position, directing new contributions to an underweight asset class, or adding to another holding. The SEC cautions that, before rebalancing, investors should consider whether the chosen method will trigger transaction fees or tax consequences.
Choose a rebalancing method
- Sell to target: Reduce the technology position until it reaches your written target. This is direct but can create a taxable gain or loss and trading costs.
- Redirect contributions: Put new savings into underweight assets. This may reduce concentration without selling, although it can take longer.
- Use a threshold: Trade only when an allocation moves beyond a predetermined band. A threshold can limit unnecessary transactions, but it must be defined in advance.
- Combine methods: Make a partial sale and direct future contributions elsewhere when the position is substantially overweight.
Write the target and the trigger before trading. Do not let a target become an excuse to increase a position whose business thesis has failed. Rebalancing corrects portfolio weights; it is not a substitute for evaluating security quality.

Understand tax-loss harvesting before selling
In a taxable account, selling a losing stock may allow the loss to offset capital gains under applicable tax rules. FINRA notes that the strategy can be useful, but also warns that the stock may rebound and that selling changes your allocation. A tax benefit alone does not demonstrate that a trade is in your best interest.
Questions to answer first
- Is the account taxable, or is it a retirement account where the treatment differs?
- How much realized gain or loss do you already have for the tax year?
- What investment will provide the desired exposure after the sale?
- Could a replacement purchase create a wash-sale issue under the rules that apply to you?
- What are the transaction costs, bid-ask spread and timing risks?
- Do your records show the correct basis for every lot?
Ask a tax professional to model the result before placing the order, particularly when spouses, multiple accounts or automatic reinvestment are involved. Keep confirmations and basis records. Tax rules are jurisdiction- and account-dependent and can change; use current IRS guidance rather than an old summary.
Handle completely worthless securities separately
A security that becomes completely worthless is different from one that is merely down. IRS Publication 550 says stock or securities that become completely worthless during the tax year are generally treated as sold on the last day of that tax year, subject to reporting rules. You may need evidence of the worthlessness and accurate basis information.

Match the decision to liquidity and behavior
Portfolio mathematics cannot override a cash need or a risk level you cannot tolerate. If you might need the money soon, volatile technology shares may be unsuitable regardless of a theoretical recovery. Set aside emergency cash and near-term spending needs before deciding how much risk to retain.
Behavior matters too. If daily price swings cause you to abandon a plan, an oversized position is a practical risk even when the company is sound. Trimming to a level you can hold through volatility can be more useful than predicting the next market move. Do not use a long time horizon as permission to ignore sleep, cash-flow or family obligations.
Use a repeatable decision worksheet
Complete this worksheet for each technology holding, then review the portfolio as a whole:
- Purpose: State the role of the holding and the outcome you expected.
- Facts: Record basis, current value, account type, gain or loss and all related holdings.
- Risk: Note the current weighting, acceptable maximum loss and any cash deadline.
- Thesis: List evidence that supports the business and evidence that would invalidate it.
- Action: Select hold, trim, replace or sell; write the target weighting and timing.
- Costs: Estimate commissions or spreads, taxes, basis effects and any wash-sale or reporting concern.
- Review date: Set a date or rule for reassessment rather than reacting to every headline.
Applying the same worksheet to every holding reduces the chance that one dramatic loss receives an inconsistent standard.

Examples of how the framework changes the answer
A sound thesis but an oversized position
Suppose a technology company still meets your business criteria, but its weight has grown beyond your target. Holding everything preserves upside but leaves concentration risk. A partial sale or redirecting new contributions can restore the intended mix while retaining exposure.
A manageable loss with a broken thesis
If new information shows that the product, finances or competitive position no longer supports your original reason for buying, the fact that the loss is only a certain percentage should not determine the decision. Selling or replacing the exposure may be appropriate even if the price could recover.
A near-term cash requirement
If tuition or another essential expense is due soon, the relevant issue is the date and reliability of the cash, not a forecast of technology prices. Reducing risk and moving the needed amount to an appropriate liquid reserve can protect the goal.
A taxable loss and a desired sector allocation
You may decide to sell a losing company, realize the loss under applicable rules and use a carefully reviewed replacement that preserves the intended portfolio exposure. Check concentration, wash-sale implications, basis and transaction costs before executing.
When to involve professionals
Consult a registered investment professional when a single holding dominates the account, when selling affects retirement income, or when you are unsure how a trade changes your overall allocation. FINRA recommends checking a professional’s registration through BrokerCheck.
Use a tax adviser for loss harvesting, worthless securities, multiple accounts, inherited shares, uncertain basis, or any decision involving wash-sale and reporting rules. Give the adviser complete statements and trade confirmations; an incomplete basis history can produce an incorrect tax result.
Mistakes to avoid
- Anchoring on the purchase price and waiting only to “get back to even.”
- Assuming a lower price means a bargain without reviewing the business.
- Adding to a loss solely to reduce the average cost.
- Ignoring overlapping holdings inside funds.
- Using a tax deduction as the primary reason to own or sell an unsuitable investment.
- Trading during a volatile session without checking cash needs, allocation and costs.
- Assuming a fund is diversified because it has many securities.
- Expecting a guaranteed recovery, a market bottom or a specific return; the cited regulatory guidance provides principles and tax rules, not a forecast.
A practical order of operations
Document the facts, measure concentration, test the thesis and time horizon, compare the four actions, then account for taxes, costs and liquidity. Execute only after the post-trade allocation is clear. Review the plan at a scheduled interval and when a material change affects the business or your circumstances. This process turns a painful price move into a portfolio decision rather than an impulse reaction.
