Stop using or charging a swollen battery. Keep it away from flammable materials, and arrange a separate disposal route through the device maker, a local hazardous-waste program, or a recycler that confirms it accepts damaged batteries. Do not put it in household garbage or curbside recycling. If it is smoking, burning, or poses an imminent fire risk, move away and call emergency services; the U.S. EPA says calling 911 may be necessary.
What to do with a swollen battery
A swollen lithium-ion battery is damaged and may be a fire hazard. The EPA states, “The swelling indicates damage to the battery and is a potential fire hazard.” Take these steps in order.

- Stop using and charging it. Do not puncture, crush, bend, open, or try to repair the battery. Oregon State Fire Marshal guidance also says not to charge batteries that are damaged, swollen, leaking, unusually hot, or recalled.
- Check for an immediate fire emergency. If the battery is smoking, burning, or otherwise appears to present an imminent fire risk, move away and contact emergency services. Do not handle or package an actively failing battery for transport.
- If there is no immediate emergency, keep it away from combustibles. Contact the device or battery manufacturer, retailer, or local or state waste authority for instructions. The EPA advises keeping the battery or device in a safe place until a proper disposal option is identified. Its FAQ gives a bucket containing a fire suppressant such as sand or kitty litter, or another place away from flammable materials, as possible interim storage. Follow local and manufacturer directions, particularly for visibly damaged batteries.
- Arrange separate collection. Use a battery recycler, retailer takeback, certified electronics recycler, or household hazardous-waste program only after confirming it accepts swollen or damaged batteries. Do not put lithium-ion batteries or devices containing them in household garbage or municipal recycling bins.
If the battery is part of a vehicle or stationary energy-storage system, contact the vehicle dealer, equipment or battery manufacturer, or installer. The EPA advises against disposing of medium and large systems in trash or municipal recycling bins.
How to choose a safe disposal route
Collection options vary by locality and by the condition, chemistry, and size of the item. The EPA identifies separate battery recycling and household hazardous-waste collection for lithium-ion batteries; for electronics, retailer takeback and certified electronics recyclers may also be options. A general listing for a collection site does not establish that it will take a swollen battery.

- Ask specifically whether the location accepts swollen or damaged batteries.
- Check whether the battery must stay inside the device or can be accepted separately.
- Confirm that the program accepts that battery chemistry and size.
- Ask about packaging, transport, appointment, or local-eligibility requirements before traveling or shipping anything.
For a damaged battery, the EPA recommends contacting the manufacturer. For a device with a battery that is not designed for easy removal, do not assume you should open it; follow the product markings and manufacturer guidance and use a suitable electronics or hazardous-waste route.
What to know about tape, bags, and transport
For used lithium-ion batteries accepted through an appropriate recycling route, the EPA recommends isolating each battery by putting it in an individual plastic bag or covering its terminals with non-conductive tape. It prefers electrical tape and says other non-metallic adhesive tape can work. This is a general precaution to reduce terminal contact, not a repair or a way to make a swollen battery safe. For damaged batteries, follow the specific directions from the manufacturer and collection program instead.

Do not assume that every battery or battery-powered device follows the same disposal rules. Identify the item and its chemistry or hazard labels, then find a collection program that accepts it. The EPA distinguishes lithium-ion, lithium single-use, button or coin, rechargeable, and lead-acid batteries; their disposal routes can differ.

- Unknown, leaking, damaged, or unusually hot items: Contact the manufacturer and local waste authority before handling or transporting them.
A chasing-arrows symbol on a lithium-ion battery does not mean it belongs in a household recycling bin; the EPA says it indicates specialized recycling. The EPA also advises keeping lithium-ion batteries and devices containing them out of household garbage and recycling bins.

In a 2021 report summary, the EPA reported more than 240 lithium-ion battery fires at 64 facilities between 2013 and 2020. The figure came from analysis of publicly available news reports about fires in the waste-management system, not a comprehensive count of every incident. Commonly identified sources included batteries from small consumer devices such as phones, tablets, laptops, hoverboards, and e-cigarettes. The EPA warns that battery damage and mishandling can create fire hazards during waste processing.

U.S. rules and local requirements
This guidance reflects U.S. federal and state sources. The EPA explains that household hazardous waste generated by normal household activities is generally excluded from federal hazardous-waste rules, while state and local requirements may be more stringent. That exclusion does not make curbside disposal a safe choice: the EPA recommends separate collection for lithium batteries. Check local acceptance rules, especially for damaged batteries. These sources do not establish requirements in other countries.
