Research these five stocks with one consistent process, but do not judge them by one shared set of financial ratios: HDFC Bank and YES BANK are banks, Infosys is an IT services company, Hindustan Zinc is a metals producer, and RVNL is a rail infrastructure project company. Start with each issuer’s latest annual report, quarterly results, investor presentation and earnings-call transcript; then test management’s explanations against reported numbers, exchange filings and cash flows. Only after assessing business quality, risks and governance should you compare valuation—and any comparison needs a common share-price date and a metric suited to the business.
Start with current primary documents
For each company, make a dated folder or spreadsheet and collect the same core records. Prefer issuer disclosures and exchange filings over summaries, social posts or price commentary. These documents establish what the company reported; management presentations and calls explain how management interprets the results, but are not independent confirmation of forecasts or claims.

- Open the latest annual report. Read the business overview, management discussion, financial statements, notes, risk disclosures, auditor’s report, related-party disclosures and corporate-governance section. Use audited multi-year figures to see whether a result is part of a pattern or a one-off.
- Add the latest quarterly result and presentation. Compare the quarter with the same quarter a year earlier and with the immediately preceding period where seasonality permits. Check whether definitions, segment reporting or one-off items have changed.
- Read the matching earnings-call transcript. Record management’s explanation of growth, costs, risks and outlook, then identify the next reported figure that could confirm or contradict it.
- Check exchange disclosures. Review shareholding, material announcements, governance filings, credit-rating actions where relevant, and any subsequent updates after the annual report. An older annual report can be superseded by a later filing.
- Keep a claim-and-evidence log. For each important thesis point, note the source, reporting period, the company’s exact measure and what future disclosure would change your view.
Issuer starting points include HDFC Bank’s investor-relations portal, which lists results, key parameters, presentations, transcripts, annual reports, ownership and regulatory disclosures; it displayed Q1FY27 materials and an Integrated Annual Report 2025-26 when accessed. Infosys’s financials page provides quarterly and annual reports, multi-year financial data, subsidiary information, statutory filings and guidance-versus-actual reporting. YES BANK’s FY2024-25 annual report directs readers to its investor-relations section and NSE and BSE filings. RVNL’s NSE integrated filing dated 29 April 2026 lists results, shareholding, annual reports, analyst materials, credit ratings, governance and material-event disclosures. Hindustan Zinc has an official FY2025-26 Integrated Annual Report. Use the latest available materials at the time you invest; the cited reporting periods are not a substitute for checking newer disclosures.
Use a common comparison framework, then switch to the right business measures
A shared framework helps keep the research consistent. The measures inside it should differ by business: a bank’s deposits and provisions are not comparable to an IT company’s deal wins, a miner’s production costs or a project company’s order book.
#1 Best Overall
| Question | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Growth | What is growing, over what period, and because of what: volume, pricing, currency, acquisitions, project awards or another driver? |
| Profitability and cash | Are margins, returns and operating cash generation holding up across multiple periods? Check the company’s definitions and separate recurring performance from adjustments or exceptional items. |
| Balance sheet and funding | What obligations, funding needs, liquidity constraints or working-capital demands could affect resilience? |
| Execution | Do announced plans, awards, deals or production targets convert into delivered output, revenue and cash? |
| Ownership and governance | Who owns the company, how is the board constituted, and what do filings say about related parties, auditors, regulatory matters and material events? |
| Valuation and expectations | What price date and denominator are being used? What performance does the valuation appear to require, relative to relevant peers and the company’s own history? |
| Downside case | What company-specific event could weaken the thesis, and what evidence would show that it is happening? |
What to examine at each company
HDFC Bank: funding, asset quality and capital
Use the latest bank result and presentation to assess deposit and loan growth, funding mix, margins, asset quality, provisions, capital and liquidity. Look at these together: fast loan growth, for example, is not sufficient evidence of durable performance without examining how loans are funded and how credit quality develops. Compare current figures with prior periods and check the bank’s definitions and any integration-related comparisons before drawing conclusions. The official investor-relations portal provides the relevant results, key parameters, presentations, transcripts, annual reports, ownership and regulatory disclosures. The materials available for this research do not establish a current numeric performance finding for HDFC Bank.
Infosys: growth quality, deal conversion and cash
Review reported and constant-currency revenue growth, operating-margin direction, large-deal conversion into revenue, client concentration, workforce economics, cash generation and capital returns. Use Infosys’s guidance-versus-actual reporting to compare what it previously said with what it later reported, while treating guidance as management’s view rather than a guarantee.

Infosys reported FY2026 revenue of ₹1,78,650 crore, up 9.6% year on year; free cash flow of ₹33,097 crore, equal to 112.3% of net profit; basic EPS of ₹71.58; and cash and investments of ₹43,075 crore. These are company-reported historical results, not forecasts. The company defines free cash flow as operating cash flow less capital expenditure under its consolidated IFRS cash-flow statement.
Infosys reported an adjusted operating margin of 21.0% for FY2026. That adjusted figure excludes the effect of specified ₹1,289 crore labour-code-related provisions, so do not compare it with an unadjusted margin as if the measures were identical. The company also reported large-deal total contract value of US$14.9 billion, with 55% net new, and a dividend per share of ₹48.0 for FY2026. Deal value is not the same as revenue already delivered; assess conversion over time.
Infosys reported FY2026 ROE of 31.6%. Its stated capital-allocation policy expects to return approximately 85% of free cash flow cumulatively over five years, subject to applicable laws and approvals. Treat that as a policy statement, not a guaranteed payout; assess actual cash generation, approvals and distributions in subsequent filings.
YES BANK: refresh the evidence before assessing the bank
Use the latest annual report, quarterly filings and investor-relations materials to examine asset quality, capital, funding and profitability. The located annual report is for FY2024-25 and says the bank publishes results, official releases and presentations through investor relations and files financial information with NSE and BSE. That report is a starting point, not sufficient evidence of the bank’s present condition; verify subsequent filings before forming a current view. The available material does not establish a current numeric performance finding or current risk profile for YES BANK.

Hindustan Zinc: production, prices and cost exposure
Use the FY2025-26 Integrated Annual Report alongside the latest quarterly results. Examine production and realized prices, the cost structure, reserves, capital spending, and environmental and regulatory exposure. Separate operating performance from movements in commodity prices: a change in revenue or profit may reflect price, output, costs or a combination. Check how the company describes its reserves and production plans, then look for evidence in reported output and investment. The available material does not establish detailed current figures for these measures.

For this rail infrastructure project company, inspect the latest results and project disclosures for the quality of the order book, conversion of orders into executed work, working capital, cash flow and counterparty exposure. An order book is not revenue already earned or cash already received; examine timing, execution and collections in subsequent reporting periods.

RVNL’s NSE integrated filing dated 29 April 2026 reported that, as at the quarter ended 31 March 2026, its board comprised eight directors: five whole-time directors, two government nominees and one independent director. The filing said appointment of six independent directors was awaited from the Ministry of Railways. This is a dated disclosure, not a statement of the board’s present composition; check newer filings. The available material does not establish current operating performance metrics for RVNL.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare valuation only after the business analysis
Do not rank these five companies by a single multiple without accounting for their different economics. A bank, an IT services firm, a metals producer and a project company have different funding structures, earnings drivers and risks. A low-looking ratio alone does not show that a stock is undervalued.
- Use the same share-price date for every company and state the reporting period used for each financial denominator.
- Name the metric and its definition. If a figure is adjusted, identify the adjustment; do not silently mix it with an unadjusted measure.
- Compare each issuer with relevant peers and its own history, rather than treating all five as one peer group.
- Ask what growth, profitability and execution the price appears to require, and identify what could prevent those expectations from being met.
- Do not infer future performance from growth, cash, dividends, an order book or past share returns.
No valuation conclusion or comparable current valuation set is established here. A sound comparison requires current prices and consistently defined, current financial data.

Write down the thesis and the evidence that could overturn it
Before investing, summarize the case for each company in a few testable claims. For each claim, record the supporting filing and period, the next disclosure that could confirm it, and a specific development that would weaken it. Examples of questions to investigate include whether bank funding and credit quality remain sound, whether IT deal wins turn into delivered revenue and cash, whether a metals producer’s output and costs support its earnings, and whether a project company converts awards into execution and collections. These are research questions, not claims that any such problem or outcome is occurring at a named company.
Keep reported facts separate from your interpretation. Annual reports and presentations are primary sources for what an issuer reports and says, but management forecasts and promotional claims are not independent verification. Revisit the thesis when new results, ownership disclosures, governance filings, project updates or material announcements appear.
