First check whether your exact phone model has stopped receiving security updates—not just major Android or iOS upgrades. If security support has ended, the phone has not necessarily been hacked, but it no longer receives the manufacturer’s fixes; when practical, move sensitive accounts and primary phone use to a supported device.
Check whether security support has actually ended
Update support depends on the model, not simply how old a phone is. Look up the exact model on its manufacturer’s support page; your carrier may also be able to clarify update availability and rollout timing. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises checking whether a specific device still receives updates. NCSC guidance

Check the installed update and the manufacturer’s policy
- On a Google Pixel: open Settings > System > Software update to check for available updates. Google also publishes model-specific support information. Google Pixel update information
- On another Android phone: check the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model, or contact the manufacturer or carrier.
- On an iPhone: check for available updates on the phone and consult Apple’s current device and security information.
- Install any available updates and distinguish security patches from major operating-system upgrades. A phone that no longer gets the newest feature release may still receive security fixes.
Not receiving the latest major OS version does not by itself prove that a phone is entirely unsupported. However, Apple explains that older OS versions may not receive fixes for every known security issue; whether a fix can be applied can depend on the system architecture and other changes. When a phone stops receiving manufacturer security updates, it misses future fixes for security problems. The NCSC says an unsupported phone is less secure. That is a reason to plan, not proof that your handset has been compromised or that an attack is inevitable. There is no established universal date when every unsupported phone must be replaced, nor a quantified risk estimate for a particular handset.

How urgently to move depends on what you use the phone for, the sensitivity of the accounts and data on it, your exposure, and whether a supported replacement is practical. Give priority to a supported device for important accounts and sensitive information when you can. If you must keep using the old phone temporarily, keep installing any updates that remain available, limit its use for your most sensitive activities, and plan a replacement. These are risk-reduction steps, not substitutes for manufacturer patches or a guarantee of safety.
Choose whether to replace, repurpose, or retire it
Replace it for sensitive or everyday use
A supported phone is the clearest option if you rely on the handset for important accounts or sensitive data. When comparing potential replacements, verify the exact model’s security-support policy and remaining support period, its compatibility with your essential apps and carrier, and whether it meets your accessibility needs. Prices, availability, and support terms vary, so check current details for the model and market you are considering rather than relying on a general brand-level claim.

Repurpose only if the remaining use suits you
You might keep an unsupported phone for a low-sensitivity, offline task. That does not restore its security support: network-connected use remains subject to the device’s patch status. Avoid treating antivirus apps or app-store-only downloads as replacements for operating-system security fixes.

If the phone is unreliable, no longer useful, or you do not want to accept the remaining risk, retire it. Trade-in eligibility and recycling rules vary; check the provider’s instructions and local arrangements before handing it over.

Pixel support periods: a model-specific example
Google’s current Pixel support page states that Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates from each model’s first availability on the Google Store in the United States. It states five years from first US Google Store availability for Pixel 6- and Pixel 7-generation phones, including Pixel Fold, and lists Pixel 5a and earlier as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. Back up, transfer, and erase the phone before handoff
Do this before trade-in, recycling, or giving the device to someone else. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone, so first make sure you have transferred what you need. Google’s instructions describe removing accounts and erasing an Android device; exact menu names can vary by model. Google account and reset guidance and Android factory reset guidance

- Back up and transfer the photos, contacts, files, messages, and other information you want to keep. Confirm you can access the transferred data before erasing the old phone.
- Prepare your accounts and erase the device. On Android, Google describes the path Settings > System > Reset options > Erase all data; menus differ across devices. Apple advises backing up and erasing an iPhone, and backing up, signing out, and erasing an Android device before trade-in. Apple trade-in preparation
- Handle mobile service. Remove a physical SIM. For an eSIM, contact your carrier about transferring or suspending service.
- Follow the recipient’s requirements for trade-in or recycling, including any steps needed for account or activation locks.
If you keep the phone while arranging a replacement
Install any system and app updates still offered, and enable automatic updates if appropriate. Check the manufacturer’s support information periodically. Updates can include security enhancements; older software may also encounter app-compatibility limitations over time, though that does not mean every app will stop working on your phone.
