If your mouse still clicks the wrong way after switching to left-handed use, check the operating system’s primary-button setting first. If it is already set to Right, look for a second mapping in the mouse maker’s utility, then test in another app to see whether the problem is application-specific.
1. Set the operating system’s primary button to Right
Left-handed primary-click behavior means the right physical mouse button acts as the primary button. The setting is separate from the mouse’s physical shape.

Windows 11
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Mouse.
- Set Primary mouse button to Right. Microsoft documents this control as the way to choose Left or Right as the primary button: Microsoft’s Windows mouse settings.
- Test a primary click and a context-menu click in more than one application.
Windows 10
Microsoft documents the older path as Settings > Devices > Mouse, then choose Right in Select your primary button. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so treat this as version-specific guidance for an existing installation, not a recommendation to use an unsupported system. GNOME
- Open Activities and search for Mouse & Touchpad.
- Under Primary button, choose Right.
- Test the mouse and, if relevant, the touchpad. GNOME says this choice affects the mouse, touchpad, and other pointing devices. See GNOME’s left-handed mouse instructions.
2. Check for another button-mapping setting
If the operating-system setting is right but clicks are still reversed, check whether a mouse configuration utility or device profile has its own left/right swap. For example, Logitech documents button swapping in Logitech Options for Mac or Windows devices: Logitech’s button-swapping instructions. This is a documented option for that software, not a rule that applies to every mouse brand.

Change one setting at a time and test again so you can tell which layer changed the behavior. Microsoft’s SwapMouseButton function documentation also describes software-level reversal of left and right button meaning. It does not establish a universal precedence rule between Windows and manufacturer utilities.
3. Find out whether one application is behaving differently
Try the same clicks in another application. Microsoft notes that some applications may not support certain mouse features: Microsoft’s mouse and input guidance. If only one app is affected, inspect its input settings or, if you are using it, the remote or virtual session’s input path before changing system-wide settings.

4. When to suspect the mouse hardware
Consider hardware diagnosis only after checking the operating-system setting, any vendor utility or profile, and behavior in multiple apps. If clicks are intermittent or unintended across applications despite those checks, the physical switch may warrant investigation. A simple left/right mapping problem by itself is not a reason to replace the mouse.

For those cases, identify the exact operating system, device, and software involved and check their current settings rather than assuming the same menu or mapping behavior.
