If you want another fast arena shooter after DOOM: The Dark Ages, start with Xonotic for free, classic arena-FPS movement on desktop. Choose Diabotical for short 1v1 or 2v2 rounds and varied modes, Quake III Arena for bots and familiar tournament play, or Unreal Tournament 2004 for a broad legacy mode mix. They scratch different itches, and current online activity is not guaranteed by the available store or developer pages.

For most players seeking a straightforward free desktop starting point, Xonotic is the clearest fit. The best alternative depends on whether you value quick duels, bots, or a bigger legacy mode selection more.

Best free starting point: Xonotic
Xonotic is the most direct recommendation for players who mean “arena shooter” in the classic sense: fast movement, a varied weapon set, and matches built around arena modes. Its official site calls it an arena-style first-person shooter and lists desktop downloads for Linux, Windows, and macOS. It says the game is free to play and modify under GPLv3+.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIts mode list includes Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, alongside Clan Arena, Nexball, Freeze Tag, and multiplayer race. That mix makes it suitable for more than straight free-for-all fragging, while retaining the compact, movement-focused feel many players want from an arena FPS.
#1 Best Overall
- APP REQUIRED - Free Download instructions included with the game. Available for Apple and Android devices.
- SOLO Mode capable or bring up to 3 more friends to the party!
- SPECIAL abilities can be used for an extra challenge.
- PLAY simultaneously to keep the action going! Everyone places their current ship in the same limited time, aim your lasers and hope you don't miss and hit an asteroid instead!
- CUSTOMIZE the size of your playing field with the 4 special Corner Tiles!
The site also shows live player and game counters. Treat those as a momentary snapshot: they do not tell you whether there will be a suitable match in your region or at your preferred time. Check them when you are ready to play rather than assuming a steady population.
Best for quick duels: Diabotical
Diabotical is a better match if you want short, highly focused rounds rather than only traditional deathmatch. Its Aim Arena mode is described as round-based 1v1 or 2v2 on compact maps; each player starts with a full loadout and gets two lives per round. That format makes it easy to focus on aim and movement without a long objective setup.

- Optional 2-player cooperative play, so you can take a friend along for the fight - just make sure you share the ammo!
- 7 diverse areas to explore, each with their own obstacles, hazards and secrets. Procedurally generated maps and rooms, so you never know what’s coming up. Adapt your tactics on a room-by-room basis.
- An arsenal of 10 different weapons to switch things up and turn the tables in your favor.
- 6 intimidating bosses, each of which will require you to learn a different strategy to defeat them.
- Languages: English, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
The Epic Games Store page lists Diabotical as free-to-play and describes ranked solo and team queues. It also lists Wipeout, MacGuffin, and Wee-Bow Instagib among its other modes, and states “over 15 game modes” and “30 maps.” Those are store-page figures with no publication year attached, not independently tested counts or a promise that every queue is active. The same page describes fast movement, weapons, and tactics as central to play.
Best for offline practice: Quake III Arena
Quake III Arena, developed by id Software and released in 1999, remains a natural choice if you want the older tournament formula or a way to play against bots without relying on online opponents. The Xbox listing names Free-for-All, Team Deathmatch, Tournament (1v1), and Capture the Flag, and describes offline single-player matches against AI-controlled bots.
Rank #3
- 7 officially licensed Jaleco titles + 100 retro style bonus games
- Full color 2" screen
- Built-in speaker with volume control
- Powered by 3 AAA batteries
- Play at home or on the go. Perfect for any game room, office or display case!
The same listing states up to 16-player multiplayer and 35 arenas. These are product-page specifications, not a statement about how many players are currently online. It lists PC play; for console online multiplayer, it says Xbox Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate is required and sold separately. Confirm platform support, price, and subscription terms on the store page for your region before buying.
Best for a broader classic mode mix: Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament 2004 suits players who want a larger selection of match styles rather than a single duel or deathmatch focus. Epic describes ten modes spanning team-based and free-for-all play and lists Windows, macOS, and Linux.

This is a legacy-community option, not a current Epic-supported live service. Epic says the franchise is no longer in development by the company, although servers for some versions remain active thanks to community developers and fans who provide patches and maintenance. The franchise page links community-maintained downloads, but that does not establish current commercial availability or universal server activity. Check the current download and community-server situation for the particular version you want.

Rocket Arena is adjacent to arena shooters, but it is a 3v3, rockets-only online hero shooter with knockback and rocket-jumping mechanics, rather than a classic arena FPS. EA’s page links a “Rocket Arena Sunset Announcement” dated December 13, 2023. The page reviewed does not establish whether the game remains playable now, so it is not a dependable recommendation for someone specifically looking for an active online destination.

How to choose based on how you play
- Want free classic arena FPS play on desktop? Start with Xonotic.
- Prefer compact, structured duels? Try Diabotical’s Aim Arena, while checking whether its queues are active when you play.
- Need opponents without an internet connection? Quake III Arena is the clearest fit because its listing explicitly describes offline bot matches.
- Want many kinds of legacy matches? Consider Unreal Tournament 2004, but expect community rather than Epic maintenance.
- Online population is decisive? Check live counters or current community information close to your play time. The official pages do not establish reliable current matchmaking populations for every game.
