- Keep it as-is: the simplest option, with no alteration risk. It still represents the player and number it originally commemorated.
- Seek a replacement: worth checking if the player moved teams or the seller’s policy covers number changes. Policies are seller-specific.

- Donate it: look for a current local youth hockey, community sports, or textile reuse program that accepts jerseys.

Check the retailer’s replacement policy
Use the terms for the seller that took your order, not a different NHL or sports retailer. Confirm that your particular jersey and purchase are covered, and follow the current instructions and deadlines before sending anything back.

Can a customizer change the name or number?
Possibly, but don’t assume removal and replacement will be clean or safe. Jersey graphics may be sewn on or heat-applied, and removing them can leave marks or damage the fabric. NHL Shop describes sewn-on graphics for its authentic style and ironed-on name, number, and logo graphics for its replica style; the actual construction can vary by season and manufacturer. Check the garment itself rather than relying only on a product category.
Real Sports Apparel cautions that it cannot change existing jersey names or numbers without risking damage. It also describes customization for blank jerseys, including heat-pressed work and some stitching done off-site. That is one retailer’s guidance, not proof that no specialist can alter an existing jersey. Ask a reputable customizer familiar with hockey jerseys to inspect yours, explain likely results and risks, and provide a quote before you approve work. The retailer’s service details and any prices or turnaround times are specific to that business and location, so confirm them directly.

Donate it only through an active program
Check local youth hockey organizations, community sports groups, and textile-reuse programs for current acceptance rules. Campaigns can be limited by location and deadline: NHL.com reported a Rogers Great Canadian Jersey campaign with participating stores and mail-in options, but the collection deadline for the campaign described was January 15. That past campaign is an example of a possible donation route, not evidence that it is still accepting jerseys.
