To track NHL goalie stats and compare team defense, use the NHL’s official statistics tables and read workload, results, and special-teams numbers together. For a goalie, start with games and starts, shots against, saves, goals against, save percentage, goals-against average, time on ice, and shutouts. For a team, compare shots and goals allowed per game with team save percentage, goals-against average, and penalty-kill measures.
Where to find NHL goalie and team stats
Use the NHL’s goalie statistics and team statistics pages. Choose the season and game type you want to examine, then sort or filter by the relevant columns. The NHL’s glossary defines statistical terms, including save percentage and shots on goal.

The tables offer season and game views. Keep those scopes consistent: a regular-season total, playoff line, and single-game result describe different samples and should not be compared as though they were equivalent.

What goalie stats matter?
Begin with playing time and workload, then read outcomes and rates alongside them. NHL’s goalie table includes the following fields:
| Stat | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Games played (GP) and games started (GS) | How often the goalie appeared and how often they started. |
| Shots against (SA) | The volume of shots the goalie faced. |
| Saves (Svs) and goals against (GA) | The recorded outcomes of those shots. |
| Save percentage (Sv%) | Saves divided by shots faced. Read it with shot volume: the same rate over very different workloads does not represent the same amount of work. |
| Goals-against average (GAA) | A complementary rate measure. Consider it alongside save percentage and the team’s shot suppression, rather than treating it as a complete individual evaluation. |
| Time on ice (TOI) | Time played, useful context for the goalie’s workload. |
| Shutouts (SO) | Games in which the goalie recorded a shutout; an additional outcome, not a substitute for the broader shot and goal record. |
| Wins and losses | Results that add context but do not replace workload, saves, and goals against. |
For a practical goalie snapshot, put starts, shots faced, saves, goals against, Sv%, GAA, TOI, and shutouts side by side. No single column in these tables isolates goalie skill from the team’s defensive contribution or adjusts for shot quality.
How to compare team defense
Team defense is easier to interpret when you separate the shots a team allows from the goals it concedes and the goalie results recorded in the team report.
- Shots against per game (SA/GP): the defensive workload allowed on a per-game basis.
- Goals against per game (GA/GP): the scoring outcome on a per-game basis.
- Team save percentage and GAA: aggregate goalie measures that help show how the team’s goaltending appears in the report.
The NHL team save-percentage table separates goalie goals against, empty-net goals, total goals against, saves, and team save percentage. These categories matter because total team goals against can differ from goalie goals against when empty-net goals are included.

Track both penalty-kill percentage (PK%) and net penalty-kill percentage (Net PK%) when evaluating special teams. They are related, but not identical: the NHL describes its net measure as accounting for shorthanded goals scored by the penalty kill. A raw PK% alone does not include that scoring contribution. See the NHL’s explanation of its stats presentation for that distinction.
A fair comparison workflow
- Match the scope. Select the same season and game type for both goalies or teams.
- Compare goalie workload and outcomes. Review games and starts, shots faced, saves, goals against, Sv%, GAA, and TOI together. Use wins and shutouts as context, not as replacements for the shot and goal record.
- Set goalie results beside team defense. Compare SA/GP and GA/GP with team save percentage and GAA to distinguish shot volume from scoring outcomes.
- Keep special teams in their own comparison. Review PK% and Net PK% as separate measures, including the shorthanded-goal contribution reflected by the net measure.
- Describe what the columns show, not what they cannot establish. The official tables are descriptive statistics; by themselves they do not allocate defensive responsibility or adjust for shot quality.
Do not mistake historical league averages for current ones
An NHL article published on December 16, 2019 reported a league-average save percentage of .915 in 2015–16 and .910 through 483 games in the season it discussed. Those are historical figures, not current-season averages. The article’s discussion of a .900 threshold was tied to that period and should not be treated as a current benchmark.
The NHL Stats tables are dynamic. For current player values, team rankings, or season averages, consult the selected season and game type in the official tables rather than relying on those 2019 figures.
