Check the league’s lineup lock and the receiver’s latest status first. If you can still make changes, start an eligible, healthy bench player if appropriate; if your bench has no suitable option, look on waivers for a player with a dependable role and steady opportunity. Make the change before the replacement’s team starts.
1. Check the deadline and lineup rules
Find your league’s player lock time, receiver and FLEX eligibility, waiver schedule, and roster rules before moving anyone. Deadlines and features vary by platform and custom league. NFL.com says its rostered players lock at their game time, and NFL Fantasy’s 2024 official rules describe that platform’s lineup-change and waiver procedures; verify the current rules in your own league rather than assuming NFL.com timing applies.

2. Confirm the receiver’s status close to kickoff
Check current injury news and the player’s actual game status near the deadline. Inactive lists and injury designations can change, so an old projection or a questionable tag alone is not a definitive lineup answer.

Check whether a healthy bench player is eligible for the open WR or FLEX spot and makes sense as a starter. Bench points do not count toward your weekly total unless you move that player into the lineup. 4. If needed, compare waiver options by role and opportunity
Start by checking the injured receiver’s backup. NFL fantasy analyst Marcas Grant identifies waivers as a way to replace injured players and recommends assessing whether a candidate is a regular starter or likely to play a lot, with repeatable weekly opportunities. - Role security: Is the player normally a starter, or does his opportunity depend on another injury?
- Expected opportunity: Does he have a steady role, or is the case for him mostly one recent scoring spike?
- This week’s matchup: Consider the opponent alongside role and opportunity; a favorable matchup does not guarantee production.
- Time horizon: Decide whether you need a one-week fill-in or a player who could help for the rest of the season.
- Eligibility and cost: Confirm the player fits the open slot, then consider the bench spot, waiver priority or FAAB cost, and claim timing under your league settings.
5. Submit the move before the relevant lock
Once you have chosen a replacement, put the player in the starting lineup or submit the waiver claim in time for your league’s applicable deadline. NFL.com’s guidance describes game-time locks and waivers, but roster limits, waiver priority, FAAB bidding, processing times, and the lock schedule are controlled by platform and league settings. Check those settings rather than relying on a general rule.

If waivers do not offer a useful longer-term option, a trade may help when another manager’s roster needs complement yours. For example, you might offer help at a position where you have depth in exchange for receiver help. Judge the completed trade by whether it improves your lineup, not just by whether it replaces the injured player. What to do if you cannot make a specific start/sit call
There is no defensible named replacement without knowing the injured player, week, scoring format, available roster, and waiver pool. Use the decision steps above to compare the options you actually have; projections are estimates, not guarantees.
