First, lock the missing phone using its platform’s device-finding service. Apple Lost Mode puts Apple Pay cards on that device on hold; Google lets you lock or erase an Android device; and Samsung says locking through SmartThings Find secures Samsung Wallet and suspends transactions until identity is re-verified. These actions protect the wallet on the device—they do not necessarily cancel the underlying physical bank card.
Use a trusted computer or another device, sign in to the account associated with the phone, and choose a lock or lost-mode option before considering a wipe. Menu names and availability can vary by account, region, device, and whether the finding service was set up before the phone went missing.

What should you do first if your phone is lost or stolen?
- Use a trusted device. Open the device-finding service for the missing phone and sign in to the account associated with it: Find My for Apple devices, Google’s lost-Android-device controls, or SmartThings Find for Samsung devices.
- Lock the phone or turn on lost mode. This is the quickest reversible step available through the platform controls. If the phone is offline or the account or finding service is unavailable, a remote command may not take effect immediately.
- Choose whether to remove wallet cards or erase the phone. Removing a card from one device is narrower than removing an account payment method. Erasing is more destructive and wipes phone data, so use it when the risk or likelihood of recovery warrants it.
- Contact the card issuer when needed. Call if the physical card is also missing, you cannot disable wallet use, or you spot suspicious transactions. Follow the issuer’s fraud instructions.
After securing the device, use a trusted device to review account access and recent transaction activity. If you suspect unauthorized account access or charges, report them promptly to the relevant provider or issuer.

Does locking a phone cancel the bank card?
No. A platform’s wallet control generally suspends or removes the digital payment credential associated with a device; it does not necessarily cancel the physical card. Apple explicitly says that cards in Apple Pay are put on hold in Lost Mode while the physical cards remain active and usable as normal. If the physical card is missing, contact its issuer to ask about freezing or replacing it.

How to lock or remove cards on each platform
iPhone and Apple Pay
Turn on Lost Mode through Find My or the Apple Account controls for the missing device. Apple says Lost Mode places a hold on the cards in Apple Pay on that iPhone. For Apple’s overview of lost-device options, see What if I lose or misplace my iPhone?
If you need to suspend or remove Apple Pay cards rather than rely only on Lost Mode, Apple describes remote card-management options through Find My and Apple Account device management. Apple’s security guide says payment ability is suspended or revoked by the issuer or payment network even if the device is offline. When the device comes online, it attempts to erase the cards from its Secure Element; that does not mean card data is necessarily erased from the device instantly while it remains offline. Android and Google Wallet
Use Google’s lost-device controls to find, lock, or erase the phone. Google says in-store purchases require a screen lock, so a locked device cannot be used to make store purchases. Erasing removes payment information, including credit and debit cards, from that device. See Google Wallet’s lost-device guidance.

Google distinguishes this from removing a payment method from the account: the device-specific action prevents tap-to-pay on that device while leaving the payment method available for online Google payments and services. Removing a payment method from the website may not remove it from the Wallet app on the phone, so verify the device-specific status. Options and supported payment methods vary by region. Samsung phone and Samsung Wallet
Sign in to SmartThings Find, select the missing phone, and choose Lock. Samsung says this locks Samsung Wallet and requests transaction suspension until identity is re-verified. If you cannot lock Wallet, Samsung advises contacting the card issuer using the number on the physical card. Its instructions depend on access to the relevant Samsung account and finding capability; see Samsung’s US support instructions for a missing phone or watch.

Start with a lock or lost mode when it is available. Use a card-specific removal control if you need to stop wallet use on the missing device and the platform offers that scope. Consider a full remote erase if recovery seems unlikely or the risk to personal data is significant. Erasure wipes phone data; on Android, Google says it also removes payment information from the device. Samsung likewise warns that erase or reset destroys data and recommends having a backup. Do not delay an urgent lock while deciding whether a wipe is necessary.

What to check before relying on remote controls
- Account access: You need to sign in to the account associated with the phone. Use a trusted device and avoid entering credentials on a device you do not trust.
- Finding-service setup: Remote controls rely on the platform’s account and finding capabilities being available. Set up Find My, Google’s device-finding options, or SmartThings Find before a loss, where supported.
- Device connection: An offline phone may not receive a command right away. Apple says payment ability can be suspended or revoked by the issuer or network even while the device is offline; removal from the device itself is attempted when it comes online.
- Scope of the action: Check whether a control affects one device, a wallet credential, or a payment method across an account. Removing a method at account level is not interchangeable with removing it from a specific phone.
- Issuer escalation: A digital-wallet hold does not resolve a missing physical card or suspicious charges. Contact the issuer for those issues and follow its fraud guidance.
