For two current examples, Apple lists the 2025 15-inch M4 MacBook Air at 2880 × 1864 pixels and 224 PPI, while the 2025 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro is 3024 × 1964 pixels and 254 PPI. Their brightness specifications also use different conditions, so the numbers need to be read in context.
What are the resolution and PPI of these MacBook displays?
Resolution is the display’s pixel dimensions; PPI means pixels per inch and describes pixel density. Apple’s specifications for the two 2025 models give these figures:

| Model | Display size and native resolution | Pixel density |
|---|---|---|
| 15-inch MacBook Air (M4, 2025) | 15.3 inches diagonally; 2880 × 1864 pixels | 224 PPI |
| 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5, 2025) | 14.2 inches diagonally; 3024 × 1964 pixels | 254 PPI |
These are model-specific examples, not specifications for every MacBook. PPI alone does not tell you the total number of pixels or how macOS scales interface elements on screen. Check the exact model and year before comparing a different MacBook.
How bright are MacBook screens?
Brightness figures are meaningful only with their mode and conditions. Apple lists 500 nits for the 2025 15-inch M4 MacBook Air. For the 2025 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro, Apple gives separate XDR, HDR, and outdoor SDR figures:
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERCHARGED BY M5 — The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 brings next-generation speed and powerful on-device AI to personal, professional, and creative tasks. Featuring all-day battery life and a breathtaking Liquid Retina XDR display with up to 1600 nits peak brightness, it’s pro in every way.*
- HAPPILY EVER FASTER — Along with its faster CPU and unified memory, M5 features a more powerful GPU with a Neural Accelerator built into each core, delivering faster AI performance. So you can blaze through demanding workloads at mind-bending speeds.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- ALL-DAY BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Pro delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in.
- APPS FLY WITH APPLE SILICON — All your favorites, including Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud, run lightning fast in macOS.*
- 1,000 nits sustained full-screen XDR: the specified sustained full-screen XDR brightness.
- 1,600 nits peak: for HDR content only.
- Up to 1,000 nits SDR outdoors: an outdoor SDR figure, not a general indoor SDR rating.
These values are not interchangeable. In particular, the Pro’s HDR peak does not mean it runs at 1,600 nits for ordinary SDR use, and the Air’s 500-nit listing should not be compared as though all figures describe the same test condition.
What does P3 color coverage mean?
Apple lists Wide color (P3) for both cited models, establishing support for P3 wide color. The cited specifications do not state a percentage of P3 gamut coverage or provide an independent color-accuracy measurement. “P3” is a color-space feature, not a coverage percentage.

- MACOS RUNS APPS FAST — All your go-to apps run lightning fast in macOS, including built-in apps like FaceTime and Messages. Plus, built-in virus protection and free software updates help keep your Mac running smoothly and securely.
Both models also list True Tone and support one billion colors. True Tone is a display feature; its presence is not evidence of professional reference accuracy. For work that depends on verified color reproduction, these product specifications alone cannot establish measured gamut coverage or calibration accuracy.

What extra display features does the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro have?
Apple’s 2025 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro specifications list a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio and ProMotion adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. A nano-texture display is configurable. These are model- and configuration-specific features; they should not be assumed to apply to the MacBook Air or every MacBook Pro.

How should you compare MacBook displays?
Start with the exact model and configuration, then compare figures that describe the same thing:
- Screen size and native pixel dimensions for display area and resolution.
- PPI for pixel density, not interface scaling.
- Brightness figures only alongside their mode and conditions, such as XDR full-screen, HDR peak, or outdoor SDR.
- P3 support separately from a measured percentage of gamut coverage or color accuracy.
- Additional features such as refresh rate and nano-texture only when listed for the specific model or configuration.
Apple’s specifications describe the manufacturer’s stated features and values; they are not independent performance tests. Apple’s Mac comparison page can help identify models to compare, but verify the specifications for the exact model and configuration you plan to buy.
