If your home has flooded, stay out until officials say it is safe to return. Once you are cleared to enter, check for electrical, structural, gas and sewage hazards; document damage; notify your insurer; then clean and dry only what is safe to handle. Floodwater can be contaminated, and a building that looks intact may still be dangerous.
1. Wait for the all-clear before returning
Follow local evacuation orders and re-entry instructions. Do not enter just because the water has receded: floors, walls and utilities may be damaged. Ready.gov advises returning only when authorities say it is safe: Ready.gov flood safety guidance.

Never walk or drive through floodwater. The CDC warns that it can conceal hazards and says, “Do NOT drive or walk across flooded roads.” See CDC flood safety guidance.

- Electricity: Stay away from wet electrical equipment and standing water. Turn off electricity only if you can do so without entering water or touching wet equipment; otherwise, contact the utility or emergency officials.
- Gas and utilities: If gas, power, water or sewer lines may be damaged, keep clear and contact the relevant utility or authorities. Do not operate equipment if you suspect a leak or damage.
- Structure: Avoid areas with visible damage, unstable flooring or other signs the building may be unsafe. If you are unsure whether the structure is sound, do not enter and ask local officials or a qualified professional.
- Water and sanitation: Do not assume floodwater or household water is safe to drink, cook with or clean with. Follow local health department instructions. Wash your hands after cleanup.
These precautions reflect the CDC’s flood guidance and FEMA’s spring flooding fact sheet.

3. Protect people before cleanup
Do not send children into disaster cleanup. People with asthma, other lung conditions or weakened immune systems should not enter a building with visible or musty-smelling mold or indoor water leaks. Anyone with health concerns should consult a health professional before helping.
For appropriate cleanup, CDC recommends rubber boots and plastic gloves. Ready.gov also advises protective clothing, heavy work gloves and an appropriate face covering or mask when cleaning mold or debris. Choose gear that protects against the hazards present, and do not treat protective equipment as a reason to enter an unsafe building.

4. Document the damage and contact your insurer
Before discarding or disturbing damaged items, photograph or video rooms, water marks and belongings when it is safe and practical. Make an itemized list, including appliance make, model and serial numbers. Keep a small sample of damaged flooring or carpet if doing so is safe and useful. Do not delay removing something that creates an immediate health risk just to preserve evidence.

Coverage depends on the policy and the cause of the water. FloodSmart distinguishes qualifying floodwater entering from the ground from water entering from above, such as wind-driven rain or a roof leak. Basement coverage is limited; ask your insurer to assess the specific loss under your policy rather than assuming every damaged item is covered. NFIP/FloodSmart reports an average NFIP claim of $82,614 for claims between 2020 and 2024; that historical average is not a forecast of what any individual claim will pay.
Federal disaster assistance may also be available after a presidential disaster declaration. Eligibility and available aid depend on the declared event and current program rules; ask about applying in addition to filing an insurance claim.

5. Decide what to clean, discard or leave to professionals
The right response depends on the water source, the material, the amount of damage and the people in the home. Sewage or other contaminated water calls for an experienced cleanup professional. EPA also recommends consulting more specialized guidance when mold covers more than about 10 square feet (roughly a 3-by-3-foot patch) or water damage is extensive. The threshold is not a guarantee that smaller areas are safe to handle: contamination and extensive damage are separate reasons to seek help. See EPA mold cleanup guidance.
- Hard, cleanable surfaces: EPA says hard surfaces can be scrubbed with detergent and water, then dried completely, provided the water source and site conditions make cleanup appropriate.
- Porous materials: Carpet, ceiling tiles and other porous items may be difficult or impossible to clean fully. CDC advises discarding materials that cannot be disinfected, including some rugs, cloth, wall coverings and drywall.
- Sewage or contaminated water: Do not attempt this cleanup as an ordinary household project; contact an experienced professional.
- Extensive mold or water damage: Consult an experienced remediation professional or the EPA’s further guidance rather than relying on a quick surface cleanup.
Use disinfectants and water only as local public-health instructions allow. Do not run an HVAC system if you suspect it is contaminated with mold.

6. Dry the home without creating new risks
Once officials have cleared the property and you can use equipment safely, CDC recommends fans, air-conditioning units and dehumidifiers to help dry the home. Keep electrical equipment away from standing water and do not operate anything that may be wet or damaged. Remove wet materials that cannot be disinfected, and dry cleanable surfaces completely. If water remains, contamination is uncertain, or the building cannot be dried safely, contact a qualified professional.
