If you have severe pain or unexpected symptoms after a hair transplant abroad, contact the clinic that treated you as soon as possible. If you suspect a complication, symptoms are worsening, or the clinic cannot promptly help, seek care from a qualified clinician where you are now—do not wait for a distant clinic to respond.
Get medical help promptly if you are concerned
A clinician needs to assess your symptoms to determine what is happening. The NHS advises contacting the clinic where you had the transplant as soon as possible for severe pain or unexpected symptoms. CDC guidance for medical tourists says not to delay seeking care when a complication is suspected during travel or after returning home.

If the situation seems urgent, you cannot reach the clinic, or you are worried that the problem is developing, seek local medical care promptly. Do not use an online article or a remote message from the clinic as a substitute for an examination.

Contact the clinic and arrange a clinical review
- Call or message the treating clinic promptly. Ask to speak with the clinician responsible for your procedure. Describe what has changed, when it began, and whether it is getting better or worse.
- Ask how and when you will be assessed. Clarify whether the clinic can arrange an in-person review or advise you on follow-up. If you need prompt assessment or symptoms are worsening, arrange local care rather than waiting for a response across borders.
- Tell the clinician who treats you locally that you had surgery abroad. Give the procedure date, destination, symptom timeline, medicines you take, and any treatment already received. CDC advises medical tourists to disclose their travel and treatment to subsequent healthcare professionals.
- Share your records. Provide operative and discharge notes, prescriptions, and follow-up instructions if available. CDC recommends obtaining medical records in English and sharing them with later healthcare professionals.
Know what symptoms can—and cannot—tell you
NHS hair-transplant guidance lists bleeding, infection, and an allergic reaction to anaesthetic among possible risks. It also notes that a transplant may not take or that a noticeable scar may form. Tightness, aching, swelling, and temporary scabbing can occur as common side effects, but those descriptions cannot determine whether a particular person’s symptoms are safe.

CDC describes additional infection-related and noninfectious complications in medical tourism generally, including surgical-site or bloodstream infections, exposure to antimicrobial-resistant organisms in some settings, blood clots, and wound separation. These are broad risks associated with medical tourism, not evidence that a specific hair-transplant patient has any of them.
A CDC release dated June 2, 2026, discussed reports involving U.S. residents with infections or other complications after travel-related cosmetic procedures, including liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast augmentation, and gluteal augmentation. It does not establish a hair-transplant-specific complication rate. No hair-transplant-specific rate is established by the sources cited here.

Check follow-up, costs, and insurance
Aftercare may not be automatic when a procedure takes place abroad. The NHS cautions that an overseas clinic may not provide follow-up, or may not provide it to the same standard as in the UK. CDC advises arranging local follow-up before medical travel and checking whether insurance covers follow-up and emergency care. Coverage depends on the actual policy and provider terms, so ask them directly.

Keep the clinic’s contact details, messages, medical records, prescriptions, and receipts together. That documentation can help you explain what happened and coordinate care; it does not replace clinical assessment.
If you are still planning treatment abroad
Before travelling, ask where follow-up will take place, what happens if you need further surgery, how emergency return travel would work, and what each part could cost. NHS guidance notes that facilities, qualifications, and standards can differ between countries, and that an overseas clinic may not have a healthcare professional in your home country.
Ask clearly who will perform each part of the procedure. ISHRS warns that unlicensed personnel performing substantial medical aspects of hair-restoration surgery can put safety and outcomes at risk; that warning does not establish anything about a particular clinic or its staff.
