Start with USAGov’s confirmation guide or Vote.gov, choose your state or territory, and follow the link to its election website. Check your registration status, legal name, current address, and polling place; if anything is missing or wrong, contact your election office promptly for the right correction steps.
How to check your voter registration status
- Open USAGov’s voter-registration confirmation guide or Vote.gov.
- Select your state or territory and follow the official link to its registration lookup. The search fields and information displayed differ by jurisdiction, so use the instructions on that page.
- Enter the information the official lookup requests. Confirm that the record says you are registered and review the details it displays.
- If the lookup is unavailable, unclear, or cannot find your record, contact your state or local election office using the contact information on the official election website.
USAGov describes the check as a way to confirm your voter-registration number and whether you are still registered. There is no single national lookup that displays every voter’s record; the state or territory election authority maintains the applicable information.

Which registration details to confirm
- Status: Check whether the record indicates that you are registered. If it says inactive, missing, or otherwise unclear, ask the election office what that status means and what action is required.
- Legal name: Make sure the name on the record is current. If you have changed your legal name, ask how to update the registration.
- Address: Confirm that the address is where you currently live and are registered to vote. Address changes can affect your polling place and, depending on the jurisdiction, your registration.
- Polling place: Check the location shown by the official election service. Do not rely on an old polling-place notice if you have moved or your details have changed.
- Party affiliation, if shown: Some states track or display party affiliation and others do not. A blank party field does not by itself mean your registration failed. Where party affiliation is used, it can affect participation in a primary—especially a closed primary—but does not limit your candidate choices in a general election.
What to do if your record is inactive, missing, or wrong
If the record is marked inactive
Contact the state or local election office promptly and ask what you must do to reactivate your registration and whether any deadline applies. USAGov says authorities may mark a voter inactive after the voter does not respond to election-office mail and has not voted in the last two federal general elections. The exact rule and remedy depend on the jurisdiction. An inactive record may require extra steps; if those steps are not completed, you may have to cast a provisional ballot.
If the lookup cannot find you or shows outdated details
Do not assume the search result proves that you are unregistered, and do not assume the online lookup is error-free. Contact your election office and ask it to verify your record and explain how to correct or restore it under local rules. If an election is approaching, ask specifically what options remain and what must be done before the applicable deadline.

Update your registration after a move or name change
If you move or change your legal name, update your registration with the relevant election authority. A permanent move to another state means you should register in the new state. When a move happens close to an election, the options depend on state law; contact both the new and former jurisdiction promptly rather than assuming the old registration will remain valid.
Use the official state or territory entry point at Vote.gov to find where to make an update. The USAGov registration guidance also explains how to change your registration. Procedures and available options vary by jurisdiction.

Check the deadline for your state or territory
Registration deadlines are set by jurisdiction and are not uniform nationwide. USAGov’s deadline guidance, last updated February 23, 2026, notes that some deadlines may fall up to 30 days before an election. That is a reason to check early, not a deadline that applies everywhere. Look up the current deadline on your official state election website and ask the election office if your situation is unclear.
Do you need your voter-registration card to vote?
Vote.gov says a registration card can confirm your registration but is not required to be carried when you vote. Separate voter-identification requirements may apply. For replacement-card instructions or the ID rules that apply where you live, check with your state or local election office.
