What’s actually slowing this PC down?

First check your Pixel’s exact model and its Android version, Android security update, and Google Play system update. Then compare the model with Google’s current update policy. A supported phone may simply be waiting for a gradual rollout; a model Google lists as no longer receiving Android version and security updates will not regain that support through troubleshooting.
Check whether the phone is actually out of support
A missing update notification is not enough to establish that your Pixel has reached the end of its support period. Google’s policy gives different Pixel model groups different support durations, and its help page says updates roll out gradually according to the device and operator. It may take a few weeks for an update to arrive. Start with the model, not the notification.

Google’s current Pixel support page, accessed in 2026, describes the following policy. The support periods below begin when each model first became available on the Google Store in the United States—not when an individual bought the phone. Google lists models in these cohorts by name, so use the exact model shown in Settings rather than inferring support from a family name.
| Google’s listed group | Published update period | Models named by Google |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of OS and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the US | Pixel 8 and later phones |
| Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generations, plus Pixel Fold | Five years of OS and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the US | Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel Fold |
| Models Google lists as no longer receiving Android version and security updates | Ended; Google does not state a continuing OS and security update period for these models | Pixel 5a with 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 4a, Pixel 4 and 4 XL, Pixel 3a and 3a XL, Pixel 3 and 3 XL, Pixel 2 and 2 XL, and Pixel 1 and 1 XL |
The policy is a live page and may change as Google adds models or updates its terms. Check the current model list directly before making a decision, particularly if the phone is a newer model not named in the groups above. The policy’s US Google Store start date is the basis for the stated duration; it is not necessarily the date the device went on sale in your country or through your carrier. Do not calculate an exact end date from the purchase date.

The support figures are policy terms, not a promise that every phone will receive a particular update on the same date. Seven years applies to Pixel 8 and later; five years applies to the named Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 generation phones and Pixel Fold. Both periods are measured from first US Google Store availability. If you need to estimate the remaining time on a device, first find that model’s first-availability date and then check Google’s current policy. A model’s age at the time you bought it does not reset Google’s clock.
Record the update information shown on the Pixel
Google displays several update details separately. Recording them makes it easier to identify what has—and has not—changed, and helps if you contact support.
- Open Settings > About phone > Android version.
- Note the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number shown on the screen.
- Return to Settings > About phone and note the exact model name listed there.
These fields are not interchangeable. Google reports the Android security update and Google Play system update as separate items. Its published Pixel support durations refer to OS and security updates by phone cohort; the Play system date is not a replacement for that policy or evidence that a model continues to receive the full OS and security update coverage. A phone showing a Play system date therefore does not, by itself, establish that its Android version and security update support is still active.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteLook at each field rather than relying on a single date or notification. The Android version tells you which Android release is installed; the Android security update and Google Play system update are displayed as separate status items; the build number is another identifying detail Google asks readers to note. These details can help describe the phone accurately, but the model’s entry on Google’s policy page determines whether it remains within the stated OS and security support period.
If the model is supported, check for and install the update
For a model within its published period, use Google’s update screen before concluding that the phone has stopped receiving updates. The label can vary slightly: Google’s instructions use Settings > System > Software updates, while some Pixel menus display System update. Follow the instructions shown on the phone.

- Connect the Pixel to Wi-Fi and charge it to at least 75% before trying the update.
- Open Settings > System > Software updates (or System update) and check the status. If an update is offered, follow the on-screen steps to download and install it.
- If the download does not finish, Google says the phone will try again automatically over the next few days. Follow the next update notification rather than assuming that one failed download ended support.
- After the update has downloaded and installed in the background, restart the phone. Google says the downloaded update becomes active after a restart.
- After restarting, return to Settings > About phone > Android version to confirm the displayed version and update fields.
A supported phone can be current for its model without showing an update on the same day as another Pixel. Google Pixel Phone Help says rollouts depend on the operator and device and may take a few weeks to arrive. If the model is within its stated period but no update appears, the available evidence does not establish that the phone is faulty merely because another device has received one. Check the screen again and allow for the rollout window; for a model-specific question that remains unresolved, contact Google Pixel support.
If the update screen reports that the phone is up to date, that message does not on its own show that support has ended. Compare the exact model with Google’s policy and allow for the gradual rollout. Conversely, if the device is listed as no longer receiving Android version and security updates, repeated checks will not turn it back into a supported model. Separate the question “Is an update available for this phone now?” from “Is this model still eligible for updates?”
When the listed support period has ended
If Google’s current policy lists the exact model as no longer receiving Android version and security updates, repeated update checks, waiting for a rollout, or restarting after an old download cannot restart its support period. Google Pixel Phone Help also notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. The absence of a newer Android release on an older model is not automatically a software fault.
At that point, the practical choice is whether to keep using the phone, replace it, or get device-specific help. Google’s published policy establishes update eligibility, but it does not assign a safety score to an unsupported Pixel or determine whether it is acceptable for a particular person’s banking, work, or other sensitive activity. Make that decision in light of what you do on the phone and your own requirements; do not treat a Play system update or other security setting as proof that ended OS and security support has been restored.
There is no single cutoff in Google’s guidance that determines what every owner should do next. The policy confirms whether the phone receives OS and security updates; it does not quantify the residual risk for a specific user or use. If you need advice about a particular device or activity, ask Google Pixel support about the device and make your choice based on your own needs rather than assuming that the same answer fits every owner.
If you keep using the phone
Review the available protections without mistaking them for renewed update support. Google’s Settings > Security page can show device and Google Account security status and may surface actions to take. Google describes Play Protect as regularly checking apps and devices for harmful behavior; screen lock and Google Play system update are also among the security settings it identifies. These are useful housekeeping measures, but they do not change the model’s published OS and security update status.
Recommended Free Tools
To review those settings, open Settings > Security and look at the device and Google Account security status and any actions the page presents. Keep in mind what each measure does: Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior, while a screen lock is a separate setting you can manage. A current Google Play system update is still not the same thing as continued Android OS and security coverage under Google’s Pixel policy.
If you replace it
Compare the remaining support period for the exact model you are considering, not just its name or release generation. Google’s stated clock starts at first availability on the Google Store in the US, so some of a model’s published period may already have elapsed by the time you buy it. Check the current policy and the model’s first US Google Store availability date before working out the time remaining. Also check the availability and update situation relevant to your country and operator: Google says rollout timing depends on the device and operator, while its published support clock uses US Google Store availability.
Choose a period that suits how long you expect to keep the replacement. The official policy gives support durations by model cohort; it does not provide personalized budget advice or say how long any particular buyer should keep a phone. If a model is absent from the current list or its status is unclear, ask Google Pixel support about that exact device instead of extrapolating from a similar-sounding model.
A Google Pixel phone is one replacement category to compare, but do not choose solely by the product name. Verify the exact model’s support cohort and how much of its stated period remains. If you are comparing devices sold in different markets or through different operators, check the availability and update details that apply to your location; the policy’s published duration uses first availability on the US Google Store as its reference point.

What to tell support if the update still will not arrive
For a supported model with an unresolved update issue, prepare the details Google exposes on the phone: exact model, Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. Include whether the update screen offers an update or reports a download problem, and whether the phone has been restarted after installation. This keeps the question focused on the device and its update state. For models outside the listed support period, the same information may help identify the phone, but it cannot establish that Google will resume updates for it.
Also mention whether you checked the update screen, whether the download completed or failed, and whether you followed the restart prompt. Those details distinguish an update that has not yet appeared from one that was offered but did not finish or activate. Google’s policy says rollout timing varies with the device and operator, so include the exact model and your operator when asking about a delayed rollout.
The relevant official references are Google Pixel Phone Help’s “Learn when you’ll get software updates on Google Pixel phones,” “Check and update your Android version,” and “Manage security & privacy settings on your Pixel phone.” The first explains the support cohorts and rollout timing; the second covers update fields and installation; the third describes security status and settings. Google’s support pages are the right place to verify policy details because the model list can change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Pixel has stopped receiving Android updates?
Find the exact model under Settings > About phone, then compare it with Google’s current Pixel update-policy list. Also check Settings > About phone > Android version for the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update, and build number. A missing notification alone does not prove that support has ended; rollouts may take a few weeks.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy hasn’t my supported Pixel received an update yet?
Google says updates roll out gradually and depend on the device and operator, so a supported phone may receive an update weeks after another Pixel. Check Settings > System > Software updates (or System update), use Wi-Fi, and charge the phone to at least 75% before installing. If a download does not finish, Google says the phone will try again over the next few days.

Does a Google Play system update mean my Pixel is still supported?
No. Google displays the Google Play system update separately from the Android security update, and its published Pixel support periods cover OS and security updates by model cohort. A Play system update does not restore or prove continued full OS and security support.
How long does Google support Pixel phones?
Google’s current policy says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, while Pixel 7a, Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, and Pixel Fold receive five years. Both periods run from the model’s first availability on the Google Store in the US, not the buyer’s purchase date. Check Google’s live policy page for the exact model and current terms.
Can I make an unsupported Pixel safe by changing security settings?
Google lists settings such as screen lock, Play Protect, and Google Play system update as useful security measures, but they do not reinstate ended Android OS and security update support. Google’s guidance does not assign a universal safety threshold for every person or activity, so decide based on your needs or ask Google Pixel support about your device.

Check your Pixel’s exact model against Google’s current policy before treating a missing update as a fault. If it is supported, allow for a gradual rollout and follow the update steps; if its support period has ended, security settings can help with general housekeeping but will not restart OS and security updates. If replacing the phone, compare the exact model’s remaining support period.
