How to Set Up Garmin Data Screens for Running

Customize the Run activity’s data screens on your Garmin watch, with model-specific steps for current Forerunners and the Forerunner 30/35.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up running data screens from the Run activity profile on your Garmin watch, then choose a layout and assign a metric to each field. The exact menus and available fields depend on the watch model: many current Forerunners let you edit screens on the watch, while Garmin’s instructions for the Forerunner 30 and 35 use Garmin Connect.

The most useful setup is not necessarily the one with the most numbers. Decide what you need to see during a run, give those fields a layout you can read while moving, and check that the fields work with your model and the Run profile. This guide covers the two documented setup paths, how to choose and organize fields, and what to check when using Connect IQ or running power.

Set up data screens on a current Forerunner

Garmin’s Forerunner 265 support instructions describe an on-watch route for configuring a Connect IQ data field: open the activity list, select Run, open the activity settings, and choose Data Screens. From there, select a screen, choose its layout, and edit its fields. Button presses and exact menu names vary by model, so treat this as a model-specific example rather than a universal Garmin sequence.

Use the Run activity profile as your starting point. A watch can have different activities and profile settings; editing another activity does not establish that its display will change the one used for running. Likewise, a field available on one watch or profile may not be available on another. Garmin’s own instructions vary by model, so if a menu is missing or named differently, consult the guidance for the exact watch rather than treating the Forerunner 265 route as a universal sequence.

  • Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
  • Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
  • Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
  • Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
  • Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more
  1. Open the activity list on the watch and select Run.
  2. Open the settings for that activity profile and select Data Screens, or the equivalent menu on your model.
  3. Select a screen to change. If your watch offers the option, add a screen when you need a separate view for another part of your run.
  4. Choose a layout, then select each field and assign a metric supported by your watch and the Run profile.
  5. Back out of the settings and check the resulting screens in the Run activity preview before starting. Confirm that the important numbers are visible and that you can move between screens as intended.

The key is to customize the Run profile, not assume that changing a field in another activity will change the running display. Garmin’s instructions are model-specific, and the available field types and layouts can differ between watches.

As you edit, think of the screen as a small dashboard rather than a checklist of every metric the watch might offer. A field earns a place if you expect to use the information during the run. If a screen becomes hard to scan, choose a layout with fewer fields or reserve secondary readings for another page, if your model supports additional screens. No one configuration is objectively best for every runner; the useful balance depends on the workout and the display you can read in motion.

Use Garmin Connect on a Forerunner 30 or 35

For the Forerunner 30 and 35, Garmin documents data-field editing in the Garmin Connect app. The app route lets you change field types, the number of fields on a page, and the number of data pages. This is an important distinction from the on-watch example: the documented path for these two models is in the app, and should not be assumed to match the menus on a different Forerunner.

  1. Open Garmin Connect and tap More.
  2. Go to Garmin Devices and select your Forerunner 30 or 35.
  3. Open Activity Options, then select Data Fields.
  4. Choose the page or field you want to adjust and make the available changes.

These directions apply to the Forerunner 30 and 35 guidance; do not assume the same app route or labels apply to other Garmin models. If your watch’s menus differ, use the instructions for its exact model.

While editing in the app, consider both the fields on each page and the number of pages. Adding more pages can separate information by purpose, but it also means there are more screens to move through. Putting more fields together can reduce the need to scroll, but only helps if the readings remain legible. The Forerunner 30/35 instructions confirm that these are configurable aspects for those models; the precise layouts and available field choices are still determined by the device.

Choose fields that suit the run

A data screen is useful only if the information it shows helps you make a decision while running. Start with the question you expect to answer: How far have I gone? Am I holding the intended pace? Is my effort within the range I planned? Then give those metrics the most visible positions.

Common examples to consider, where your watch supports them, include pace, distance, elapsed time, heart rate, and cadence. The cited Garmin support instructions explain how to edit fields but do not provide a complete model-independent catalogue of built-in metrics. Do not assume that every example will appear on every watch or in every activity profile. Look at the options available for your specific Run profile and build around those.

A useful way to narrow the choices is to distinguish between information you check repeatedly and information you consult occasionally. Put the repeatedly used reading on the primary screen or in the most prominent position available. Secondary information can go on another screen if the watch supports it. This avoids using a prominent field for a number that does not affect the run, while still leaving room for extra details when you want them.

For a straightforward easy run

Consider displaying elapsed time, distance, and a pace field if those are available on your watch. These can help you keep track of the run without adding metrics you do not intend to use. Garmin’s cited support instructions do not establish a complete list of fields available on every watch, so check what your own model offers.

For a simple outing, ask whether you actually need all three readings at once. If one is the main reference point for your run, give it enough space to read easily. If checking distance and elapsed time matters just as much, a multi-field layout may suit you, provided the numbers remain legible. You can also use separate screens when your model allows it, though doing so means moving between pages to see all the information.

For intervals or structured pacing

Prioritize the information you need to manage the current effort and recovery. Depending on what the watch supports, that may mean pace, elapsed time, or distance. If you place several small fields on one screen, make sure you can read them at a glance; otherwise, put the key metric on a less crowded screen and use another screen for secondary details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before configuring an interval screen, decide which reading will guide the next decision. A layout crowded with metrics can make that reading harder to find just when you want to check it. Conversely, splitting every reading onto its own page can require more screen changes than you prefer. Compare the trade-off for your workout: a compact set of fields together versus fewer, more prominent readings across separate pages. Garmin’s guidance does not identify one arrangement as universally superior.

For effort or running-power monitoring

Heart rate or running power may be useful when they are part of your training plan and supported by the watch and activity profile. Running power is not equally available across Garmin watches: Garmin says select watches provide it natively, while some models require a compatible accessory and a Connect IQ app. Confirm compatibility for your specific watch before relying on a power field.

That distinction matters when planning a screen around power. A power metric may depend on the model, an accessory, an app, or a combination of those, rather than being a standard field that every Garmin runner can add. Check the specific compatibility and setup requirements before buying an accessory or rearranging screens around a metric. The support result identifies these different paths but does not establish that one accessory or app works with every watch.

Pick a layout you can read while moving

There is no universally best layout in the available Garmin guidance. The practical choice depends on how many metrics you need at once, how legible they are on your watch, and whether you are comfortable scrolling between screens. Compare layouts on four points: at-a-glance readability, the purpose of the workout, compatibility with the watch and activity, and how often you would need to move between pages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Fewer, larger fields: a good starting point if you want to read a primary metric quickly or find crowded screens hard to scan. The trade-off is that fewer readings are visible together.
  • More fields on one screen: useful when you regularly need several readings together, provided the text remains legible while you run. If you have to pause to interpret the screen, the added fields may not be helping.
  • Separate screens by purpose: one screen can keep the main run metrics together while another holds secondary data. This can reduce clutter, but it means moving between screens to see everything.

These are practical selection criteria, not measured claims that one layout improves performance. A layout that works for an easy run may not be the one you want for intervals or a power-focused workout. The deciding question is whether the screen shows the reading you need, in a place you can find, without making the other useful information needlessly difficult to access.

Consider interaction as well as appearance. If a metric is important throughout a run, placing it on a screen you must repeatedly scroll to may be inconvenient. If a reading is only occasional, it may be reasonable to put it on a secondary page. Preview the screens on the watch and consider whether the fields are readable at a glance before settling on the configuration.

Understand Connect IQ field limits and compatibility

Downloaded Connect IQ fields have compatibility constraints. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 support page says that not all Connect IQ data fields are compatible with all activity profiles. It also states that users can use up to two Connect IQ data fields at a time in the instructions covered by that page. Those limits belong to the cited Forerunner 265 guidance; they should not be generalized to every Garmin watch or every built-in field.

If a downloaded field does not appear or cannot be selected, check that it is compatible with your watch and with the Run activity profile. Also check whether your configuration already uses the two Connect IQ fields allowed by the Forerunner 265 guidance. Built-in fields and downloaded Connect IQ fields are not interchangeable for compatibility purposes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practice, check compatibility before treating a downloaded field as a guaranteed part of your setup. A field can be available for one activity but not another, and Garmin explicitly warns that Connect IQ data fields do not work with every activity profile. A field that is absent or unavailable is not necessarily a sign that the whole data-screen feature is broken; model and profile support are among the first things to verify. Follow the instructions for your exact model, and keep the two-field limit in its proper context: it is stated in the cited Forerunner 265 instructions, not as a blanket limit for all Garmin watches.

Do not confuse the choice of a built-in metric with downloading an app or field. The Connect IQ compatibility statements apply to Connect IQ data fields. Garmin’s support material does not establish that every ordinary built-in metric is subject to the same limit, so avoid applying that restriction to all fields on the watch.

Running power: native, accessory, or app-dependent

Garmin’s running-power guidance describes more than one setup. Some watches provide running power natively; on some others, the feature requires a compatible accessory and a Connect IQ app. The supported choices and setup depend on the watch and app, so a running-power screen cannot be assumed to work on every Garmin running profile.

Garmin lists Connect IQ running-power choices that can show current power, lap average, last-lap average, session average, or a combined display. The Combo Running Power app has a one-field layout requirement, according to Garmin’s support result. That is a constraint for that app, not a general rule for Garmin data screens. Check the app’s compatibility and layout requirements for your model before building a screen around it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These options serve different viewing needs: current power is a live reading, while lap-average, last-lap-average, and session-average options present an average over the named period. The combined display groups information, but its one-field layout requirement means you need to account for that constraint when choosing the screen. This comparison describes Garmin’s listed choices; it does not mean each option is available on every watch or that any one is best for every runner.

Compatibility should come before layout planning or a purchase. First establish whether your watch supplies running power natively or whether the particular setup calls for a compatible accessory and Connect IQ app. Then check that the app and the field work with the exact watch and Run activity profile. Garmin’s support result does not provide a universal accessory recommendation or confirm that every model supports every listed app choice.

Check the screens before you run

After editing, open the Run activity and preview the data pages before starting an actual run. This simple check can catch a field that is missing, an unexpectedly crowded layout, or a screen order that makes the most-used information inconvenient to reach. Treat previewing as a practical check rather than proof that every downloaded field or accessory will work in all circumstances.

  • Confirm you edited the Run activity profile.
  • Check that each selected field appears on the intended screen.
  • Verify that any Connect IQ field is compatible with the activity profile and watch.
  • Make sure the key information is readable in the chosen layout.
  • Scroll through the screens in order and decide whether the number of pages is practical for your run.
  • If you are setting up running power, confirm whether your watch provides it natively or whether your chosen setup needs a compatible accessory and app.

If a field is absent, revisit the model-specific instructions and compatibility rather than assuming that the menu path for another watch applies. On the Forerunner 265, Garmin’s guidance calls out activity-profile compatibility for Connect IQ fields and a maximum of two such fields at a time. For the Forerunner 30 and 35, Garmin documents editing from Garmin Connect under More > Garmin Devices > [device] > Activity Options > Data Fields. These distinct routes are a reminder to identify the model before troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the instructions here do not match the watch menus, use Garmin’s support guidance for the exact model. The Forerunner 265 on-watch example and the Forerunner 30/35 Garmin Connect route show why following a model-specific path matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up Garmin data screens for running?

Select the Run activity profile, open its settings, and find Data Screens or the equivalent menu for your model. Choose a screen and layout, assign supported fields, then preview the pages before starting. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 instructions describe this on-watch route, but exact menus vary by model.

Can I change Garmin running data fields in Garmin Connect?

For the Forerunner 30 and 35, Garmin documents this path: Garmin Connect > More > Garmin Devices > select the watch > Activity Options > Data Fields. That guidance allows changes to field types, fields per page, and the number of data pages. Do not assume the route applies to other models.

Why can’t I select a Connect IQ data field for Run?

Check that the field is compatible with both your watch and the Run activity profile. Garmin says not all Connect IQ fields work with all activity profiles. Its Forerunner 265 instructions also state a limit of up to two Connect IQ data fields at a time; that specific limit should not be generalized to every Garmin watch or built-in field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What data should I put on my Garmin running screen?

Choose metrics that answer the questions you expect to have during the run. Depending on your watch and Run profile, examples include pace, distance, elapsed time, heart rate, or cadence. Availability varies, and Garmin’s cited instructions do not provide a complete model-independent list.

Can every Garmin watch show running power?

No universal availability is established. Garmin says select watches provide running power natively, while some models require a compatible accessory and Connect IQ app. Check compatibility for your exact watch before planning a screen or buying an accessory.

What running-power fields are available through Connect IQ?

Garmin lists options for current power, lap average, last-lap average, session average, and a combined display. These choices are app- and model-dependent. Garmin’s support result says the Combo Running Power app requires a one-field layout.

The Bottom Line

Configure the Run profile, choose only the fields you expect to use, and favor a layout you can read while moving. Garmin’s on-watch and Garmin Connect instructions differ by model, and Connect IQ fields and running power have their own compatibility requirements. Preview the finished screens and check the support instructions for your exact watch before relying on a field.
