How to Change Gemini’s Privacy, Notification, and Startup Settings on Desktop

Gemini settings differ across the native Windows and Mac apps, Chrome, and the web. Here’s where to manage activity and what Google documents for shortcuts, visibility, notifications, and startup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gemini’s desktop settings depend on which version you use. To manage personal-account activity, open Gemini on the web and go to Settings and help > Activity, or use Google My Activity’s Gemini page. The native Windows and Mac apps have documented keyboard shortcuts, but Google’s cited desktop-app instructions do not document a general startup toggle or a general notification switch. Gemini in Chrome has separate controls for where it appears in the browser, Mac menu bar, or Windows system tray.

That distinction matters if you are trying to change privacy, stop an app from appearing, silence alerts, or keep Gemini from launching when your computer starts. Activity retention is managed through a Google account control; Chrome’s appearance toggles affect Gemini in Chrome; and the native apps have their own installation requirements and shortcuts. The steps below separate those settings so you can change the control that matches your goal without mistaking visibility for privacy or startup behavior.

First identify which Gemini desktop experience you use

“Gemini on desktop” can mean Google’s native app for Windows, its native app for Mac, Gemini integrated into Chrome, or Gemini in a web browser. These are different product surfaces, so a setting for one does not necessarily control another. In particular, Chrome’s visibility preferences are not settings for the native Gemini apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by asking where you open Gemini. If you installed an app from Google and launch it from the Start menu or Applications folder, use the native-app sections below. If Gemini appears inside Chrome and its browser interface, use the Chrome section. If you open gemini.google.com in a browser, use the web route for activity and privacy controls. You can use the web activity page to manage a personal account even if you usually open Gemini through a desktop app.

The settings also serve different purposes. Activity controls determine whether Gemini Apps Activity is kept, displayed, or automatically deleted. Keyboard shortcuts control quick access. Chrome preferences control where Gemini in Chrome is shown. An update notice helps install an app update. None of these purposes should be treated as interchangeable: hiding a Chrome entry is not a way to delete account activity, and turning activity off is not a startup setting.

Product surface Documented controls covered here What the cited instructions do not establish
Native Gemini app for Windows Quick-access shortcut (Alt + Space); an update notice may appear when the app opens. A general startup preference or all-purpose notification on/off switch.
Native Gemini app for Mac Quick-access shortcut (Option + Space), which can be customized in the app settings. A general launch-at-login preference or all-purpose notification switch.

Gemini on the web For personal accounts, review or delete Gemini Apps Activity, turn Keep activity off, and change auto-delete. That changing activity settings immediately erases every conversation or stops all data processing.

Change Gemini privacy and activity settings

For a personal Google account, the activity controls are available in Gemini on the web or through Google My Activity. Google’s computer instructions for “Manage and delete your activity in Gemini Apps” describe these controls; the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, last updated September 24, 2026, provides broader disclosures for covered products, including the Gemini web app and Gemini app on macOS. The privacy hub is not evidence of a separate, comprehensive privacy panel inside the native desktop app.

Use this route when you want to inspect or delete activity, choose how long it is retained before automatic deletion, or stop new conversations from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity. It is an account-level activity control, rather than a preference for where an app icon appears. If you use more than one Google account, check that you are signed in to the account whose activity you intend to manage before changing anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open the activity controls

  1. In a browser on your computer, open Gemini at gemini.google.com and sign in to the account whose settings you want to change.
  2. Select Settings and help, then select Activity.
  3. Alternatively, open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini while signed in to review the Gemini activity controls there.
  4. Choose whether to review or delete activity, turn Keep activity off, or adjust the auto-delete period.

If you normally use the Windows or Mac desktop app, you do not need to locate a privacy panel in that app to follow the documented personal-account steps. Open the web route in a browser instead. This is particularly useful when a menu in the app does not match a help article: first check that you are looking at the same product surface and account, then use the specific activity page Google documents.

Choose an auto-delete period

Google says Gemini Apps Activity older than 18 months is auto-deleted by default for personal accounts. The available choices Google documents are 3 months, 18 months, 36 months, or Don’t auto-delete activity. Select the period that matches how long you want activity retained, or delete activity manually from the activity page.

The periods are alternatives for automatic deletion, not different levels of app visibility. Choosing 3 months means selecting a shorter auto-delete period than the 18-month default; choosing 36 months retains activity longer before automatic deletion. “Don’t auto-delete activity” means you are not choosing one of those automatic deletion intervals. If you do not want activity to remain until its selected period expires, use the activity review and deletion controls for eligible existing activity.

Auto-delete is a retention setting, not a promise that the activity disappears the moment you change the setting. The documented choices describe how long activity is kept before automatic deletion; use the review and delete controls when you want to remove eligible existing activity yourself. If your purpose is simply to limit how long stored activity remains, select the appropriate interval. If your purpose is to remove activity already listed, use the delete action rather than relying only on a future auto-delete schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review or delete existing activity

The activity page lets you review or delete Gemini Apps Activity. Treat that as a separate choice from setting an auto-delete period or turning Keep activity off. A retention period governs automatic deletion over time, while the review and delete route is the documented place to act on eligible activity already listed. Check the activity page after opening it to make sure you are working with the account and activity you mean.

Deleting activity and turning activity off solve different problems. If you switch off Keep activity, that changes whether conversations appear in Gemini Apps Activity going forward; it does not by itself erase the existing activity record. If you want to address existing activity, use the delete controls as well. Conversely, deleting listed activity alone is not the same as changing the setting for future activity.

Turn Keep activity off—and understand the limit

Turning Keep activity off means conversations will not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. It does not mean that no information is processed or that the conversation is deleted immediately. Google says that, even with Gemini Apps Activity off, conversations may be saved with the account for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service and process feedback. Treat that as a separate, limited retention period rather than as activity-history storage.

The 72-hour statement is an important qualification if you are turning the setting off for privacy reasons. “Off” describes the activity setting and whether those conversations appear in Gemini Apps Activity; it is not a claim that a conversation vanishes at once or that Gemini cannot process information needed to provide the service. Google’s explanation gives the reason and timeframe: conversations may remain with the account for up to 72 hours for service provision and feedback processing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your goal is to remove existing conversations from the activity record, use the delete controls as well; switching off Keep activity is not the same operation as deleting the activity already shown there. If your goal is to change how future activity is handled, check that Keep activity is off. These steps address different parts of the setting and should not be collapsed into one action.

Work or school accounts may not show the same controls

Google says Gemini Apps Activity settings for work or school accounts are controlled by the organization’s Workspace administrator. Depending on the organization’s configuration, users may not be able to change retention settings or see how long chats are retained. If a control is missing or unavailable, ask your Workspace administrator rather than assuming the personal-account steps apply.

This is an account-type difference, not necessarily an app problem. The personal-account route and options should not be assumed to override organization policy. For a managed account, the administrator controls the organization’s settings, and the user may not have visibility into the retention period. If you have both a personal and a work or school account, confirm which one is signed in before interpreting a missing option.

Change shortcut and visibility settings by product

Native Gemini app for Windows

Google documents Alt + Space as the Windows app’s quick-access shortcut. Its Windows Help Center instructions do not document a setting for changing that shortcut, a launch-at-startup preference, or a general notification switch. Do not use the Windows app’s documented update alert as evidence that other Gemini notifications can be enabled or disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Windows app requires Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of available disk space, and a stable internet connection. To install it, go to Google’s Gemini desktop download page at gemini.google/desktop, download GeminiSetup.exe, run the installer, open Gemini from the Start menu, and sign in.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Those requirements are useful to check if the app is not available or will not install: the documented minimum operating system is Windows 10, and the listed memory and disk requirements are 8 GB RAM and 200 MB available space. A stable internet connection is also required. These are installation requirements, not privacy or notification options. Once installed, Alt + Space is the documented quick-access shortcut; if your question is specifically how to change it, the cited Windows instructions do not provide a customization step.

Native Gemini app for Mac

The Mac app uses Option + Space for quick access. Google’s Mac Help Center says this shortcut can be customized in the app settings. That is a keyboard-shortcut control; the cited instructions do not document it as a way to change launch-at-login behavior or general notifications.

To customize the shortcut, open the Gemini app’s settings and change the shortcut there. Google’s instructions establish that customization is available in the app settings, but the shortcut should be understood only as the key combination for quick access. Do not infer that changing it also changes whether the app launches automatically or sends notifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Mac app requires macOS Sequoia (15.0) or later, at least 8 GB of RAM, 200 MB of disk space, and a stable internet connection. To install it, download the DMG from gemini.google/mac, open the downloaded file, drag Gemini into Applications, then launch the app and sign in.

As with Windows, these are product requirements rather than optional settings. Check that the Mac is running macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later and has the listed available memory and disk space before troubleshooting an installation. The Mac-specific documented customization is the Option + Space shortcut; the cited Mac instructions do not establish a general notification preference or launch-at-login control.

Gemini in Chrome: control where it appears

To change Chrome’s Gemini visibility preferences, open Chrome > More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, use the available toggles to control whether Gemini appears at the top of the browser, in the Mac menu bar with a keyboard shortcut, or in the Windows system tray with a keyboard shortcut.

Choose the preference that matches the location you want to change. The browser-top option controls Gemini’s appearance at the top of the Chrome browser. On a Mac, a separate preference covers the menu bar and its keyboard shortcut; on Windows, the relevant preference covers the system tray and its keyboard shortcut. If Gemini remains visible in a different one of those locations after you change a preference, return to Preferences and check the toggle for that particular location rather than changing an unrelated one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These preferences change the presentation of Gemini in Chrome. They should not be treated as visibility, startup, or notification preferences for the separate native Gemini desktop apps. Google’s Chrome instructions describe the visibility options; they do not establish that these switches change privacy retention. For activity and retention, use the Gemini web or My Activity route described above.

What to do about notifications and startup

Windows update notices

Google’s Windows Help Center says an update notification may appear in the bottom-right corner when Gemini opens. Click Restart in that notice to restart Gemini and install the update. This is an update-specific alert, not a documented general notification setting. The cited instructions do not provide a switch for turning all Gemini notifications off.

If you see that notice, it is an instruction to restart the app to complete the update. It does not indicate that Gemini has a general notifications panel, and the cited Windows help does not describe a preference for suppressing all notifications. Do not mistake the update alert for a control over other alerts or for a Windows startup prompt.

Launch at startup

If you are trying to stop Gemini from opening when your computer starts, the cited native-app instructions do not document a Gemini startup preference for either Windows or Mac. They also do not establish that a Chrome visibility toggle controls startup. Avoid treating a menu-bar, system-tray, or browser-visibility option as a launch-at-login setting: those are different behaviors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That limitation is worth stating plainly: the documented guidance here does not provide a step-by-step native-app setting for “stop Gemini from opening at startup.” It also does not establish whether a system-level operating-system control exists for a particular device or configuration. Do not assume that an option to hide Gemini from a Chrome location, change a shortcut, or manage activity will prevent a native app from launching.

For Workspace users, Google’s September 11, 2026 notice says the Gemini desktop feature is on by default for organizations with Gemini enabled and is subject to Workspace Admin console Generative AI settings; it also says there is no end-user setting for that feature. This describes organizational availability, not an individual user’s computer startup setting.

In other words, the Workspace notice concerns whether the organization has the desktop feature enabled, with availability governed by administrator settings. It is not an individual toggle for startup behavior or a notification preference. If you use a managed account and need to know whether the desktop feature is available, contact the Workspace administrator; if the concern is what happens when your personal computer starts, the notice does not answer that question.

Notifications versus visibility

A notification tells you about an event, such as the documented Windows update notice. Visibility preferences determine whether Gemini in Chrome is shown in one of the listed locations. A shortcut is a way to summon an app or feature. Because those functions are different, changing a Chrome visibility preference does not establish that notifications are disabled, and customizing a Mac shortcut does not establish that the app no longer launches at login.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When choosing a setting, match it to the symptom: use Chrome Preferences if Gemini is showing at the top of Chrome, in the Mac menu bar, or in the Windows system tray; use the web activity controls for activity retention; use the Mac app settings for its customizable shortcut; and use Restart on the Windows update notice to install the update. For a general native-app notification or startup switch, the cited Google instructions do not document one.

Quick troubleshooting by symptom

  • You cannot find Activity: use Gemini on the web and open Settings and help > Activity, or go to the Gemini activity page in Google My Activity. A native app setting is not required for this documented personal-account route.
  • Keep activity or retention controls are unavailable: if this is a work or school account, the administrator may control the settings. Ask the Workspace administrator about the organization’s retention configuration.
  • Turning activity off did not erase a conversation: off stops conversations appearing in Gemini Apps Activity; it is not immediate deletion. Use the activity deletion controls for existing activity and account for Google’s stated retention of up to 72 hours for service and feedback.
  • Gemini still appears in Chrome: check Chrome > More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome > Preferences. Confirm you changed the preference for the location you mean—browser top, Mac menu bar, or Windows system tray.
  • You want to disable all notifications or prevent the native app starting automatically: Google’s cited Windows and Mac app instructions do not document those general controls. The documented Windows notice is specifically for an app update; do not confuse it with a universal notification preference.
  • You want to change the quick-access shortcut: Google documents Alt + Space for Windows but does not document Windows shortcut customization in the cited instructions. On Mac, Option + Space can be customized in the app settings.
  • The app will not install: check the documented requirements first. Windows requires Windows 10 or later, 8 GB RAM or more, 200 MB available disk space, and a stable internet connection. Mac requires macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later, 8 GB RAM or more, 200 MB of disk space, and a stable internet connection.
  • You are unsure which setting to change: identify whether you are using the native app, Chrome, or the web first. The product surface determines which controls apply; the Chrome appearance options do not set native-app privacy or startup behavior.

Official instructions and privacy information

Google’s relevant documentation includes “Use the Gemini app for Windows,” “Use the Gemini app on Mac,” “Use Gemini in Chrome — Computer,” and “Manage and delete your activity in Gemini Apps — Computer,” all accessed October 13, 2026. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says it was last updated September 24, 2026, and its privacy notice was last updated June 29, 2026. The Google Workspace Updates notice about the Windows desktop app is dated September 11, 2026.

Use the Help Center pages for the product-specific steps and requirements, the activity instructions for personal-account history and retention controls, and the Privacy Hub for fuller disclosures about covered Gemini apps. Google identifies the Gemini web app and Gemini app on macOS among products covered by the hub. The hub is useful for broader privacy context, but it should not be mistaken for a separate, comprehensive privacy settings panel in the native desktop app.

The distinction between documented controls and undocumented ones is also useful when searching for a setting. Google documents Windows Alt + Space, Mac Option + Space customization, Chrome location preferences, personal-account activity controls, and a Windows update notice. The cited native-app instructions do not document a broad notification off switch or a general startup toggle. If your goal falls into that last category, these pages do not provide a Gemini-specific setting path to follow.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I change Gemini privacy settings on a desktop computer?

For a personal Google account, open Gemini at gemini.google.com, sign in, and select Settings and help > Activity. You can also go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. There you can review or delete Gemini Apps Activity, turn Keep activity off, or choose an auto-delete period. Work or school accounts may be managed by a Workspace administrator.

How do I turn off Gemini activity or delete Gemini chat history?

Use the Activity controls in Gemini on the web or Google My Activity. Turning Keep activity off stops conversations from appearing in Gemini Apps Activity, but it is not the same as deleting existing activity. Use the delete controls for eligible activity already listed. Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours when activity is off so it can provide the service and process feedback.

What is Gemini’s default auto-delete period, and what choices are available?

For personal accounts, Google says Gemini Apps Activity older than 18 months is auto-deleted by default. The documented choices are 3, 18, or 36 months, or “Don’t auto-delete activity.” These are retention intervals; use the review and delete controls if you want to act on eligible existing activity rather than wait for automatic deletion.

Can I stop Gemini from opening at startup or turn off all Gemini notifications?

Google’s cited native Windows and Mac app instructions do not document a general startup toggle or all-purpose notification switch. Windows documentation describes an update notice that may appear when the app opens; clicking Restart installs the update. Chrome’s visibility preferences and the Mac shortcut setting are different controls and are not documented as startup or general notification settings.

How do I change Gemini’s keyboard shortcut on desktop?

The Windows app’s documented quick-access shortcut is Alt + Space, but the cited Windows instructions do not document a way to customize it. The Mac app uses Option + Space, and Google says it can be customized in the app settings.

How do I show or hide Gemini in Chrome’s system tray or menu bar?

In Chrome, open More > Settings > AI innovations > Gemini in Chrome. Under Preferences, change the toggle for the location you mean: the top of the browser, the Mac menu bar, or the Windows system tray. These preferences apply to Gemini in Chrome, not necessarily to the native desktop app, and do not change activity retention.

Why can’t I change Gemini activity retention on my work account?

Google says Gemini Apps Activity settings for work or school accounts are controlled by the Workspace administrator. Depending on the organization’s setup, users may not be able to change retention settings or see how long chats are kept. Ask your administrator if a control is missing.

The Bottom Line

Use Gemini on the web or Google My Activity to manage personal-account activity; remember that turning Keep activity off is not immediate deletion and Google says conversations may remain for up to 72 hours for service and feedback. Use Chrome Preferences only for Gemini in Chrome’s browser, menu bar, or system tray visibility. The native apps document shortcuts and a Windows update notice, but Google’s cited instructions do not establish a general startup toggle or all-purpose notification switch.
