Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf Xbox Cloud Gaming stops after you have been playing for a while, first note what happened immediately beforehand: Was the game idle, did it close or restart, or did the stream freeze or show a network warning? Those clues help distinguish Microsoft’s documented idle handling and game-closure behavior from a possible connection or device problem. Microsoft’s documentation does not set a universal maximum length for an active player’s single session.
Start by identifying what ended
Record the game, device, app or browser, approximate time played, exact message, and whether you were actively playing. Also note whether the game itself closed, the stream showed a network-quality warning, or the connection simply stopped responding. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause.

- It stopped after a pause or cutscene: idle detection is a plausible explanation.
- The game closed or restarted: the stream can end when the game closes, including when a game update requires a restart.
- The stream froze or showed a network warning: investigate connection quality.
- It happens only with one game or setup: compare another game, supported device, or connection if available.
Microsoft does not publish a universal consumer-facing idle timer or a player setting to disable idle handling. Its developer documentation says, “Xbox Game Streaming ends user sessions when it detects users being idle,” and notes that long cutscenes may trigger this behavior. The documentation recommends that game developers use the XDisplayAcquireTimeoutDeferral API to handle such cases. Microsoft’s Xbox Game Streaming development guidance also says an unexpected disconnection may retain a session for 5–10 minutes; that is developer-facing recovery behavior, not a limit on how long a connected player may play.

If it stopped while idle
Try another session with normal active play and note whether the game was paused or showing a long cutscene when the stream ended. That pattern is consistent with documented idle detection. The handling is a platform-and-game behavior; there is no documented player toggle to turn it off. Avoid relying on simulated input as a workaround.

If the game closed, crashed, or restarted
Relaunch the game and record any crash, update prompt, or error. Microsoft says a game closing ends the streaming session, including a manual restart required by an update. If one game repeatedly closes while others continue to work, report the pattern to Xbox or the game’s support team; the documentation does not establish what caused a particular crash.
If there was a freeze or network warning
Check Xbox’s network quality indicator during a session if it is available on your setup. Xbox introduced the indicator to help identify connection problems during cloud gaming. Streaming performance can vary with the internet connection, location, device, and other factors. Xbox’s February 2025 update describes the indicator and connection factors.

- Use wired Ethernet if practical; otherwise try a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network.
- Reduce competing network activity while testing, then see whether the warning or freeze recurs.
- Compare your connection with Xbox’s published guidance: its current Cloud Gaming FAQ recommends 10 Mbps on mobile devices and 20 Mbps on consoles, PCs, and tablets, with 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data. Xbox Wire separately recommends at least 20 Mbps and wired Ethernet where possible, or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, for a stable cloud-gaming connection in its Getting Started guide published December 19, 2025.
These are performance recommendations, not guarantees against drops. A speed test alone does not show whether latency or packet loss is disrupting a stream. A 2024 IFIP Networking study found that increased latency and packet loss affected Xbox Cloud Gaming in its experiments, but its controlled results are not a diagnosis or a universal home-network threshold. Read the study.

Check that your device and browser are currently supported and updated, then compare another supported device or connection if convenient. Xbox notes that game, feature, and plan availability can vary by time, region, plan, and platform. Switching between an app and browser is a useful comparison, not a universal fix. Check your plan and the date
Confirm that your account has the relevant cloud gaming entitlement and check Xbox service and account status. A monthly allowance can also matter, but the timing is important: in an announcement dated September 3, 2026, Xbox said that monthly cloud gaming hours included with Game Pass would change beginning in November 2026. Xbox listed 15 hours for Ultimate, 10 for Premium, and 5 for Essential. At the time of that announcement, these were future monthly allowances—not evidence that a particular player had hit a per-session timer. Xbox said further details about pricing, extra hours, eligible games, markets, and how to check remaining time would be provided in November. For a stop in or after November 2026, consult the current policy and account information rather than assuming the announcement specifies how it is enforced. Xbox’s September 3 announcement.

If the problem continues after you compare the likely causes, give Xbox Support details that help distinguish them: the game, device and platform, app or browser and version, approximate elapsed playtime, exact error and time, whether you were idle or actively playing, network-indicator state, and whether another supported game or setup behaves differently. This information can help support assess whether the issue follows a game, device, connection, account, or service.
