For the Steam version of Final Fantasy IX, start with the stock launcher, your display’s native resolution, and the default timing options. Choose fullscreen or windowed mode according to which behaves reliably on your PC. If you want widescreen or frame-rate controls beyond the stock options, Memoria is an optional community project—not an official Square Enix utility—and its settings can vary by release.
Start with the stock PC launcher
Launch the Steam version and use the game’s own launcher for the display options it provides. Steam describes the PC release as including high-definition movies and character models, but its listing does not prescribe a resolution, filtering option, or universal graphics preset. - Set resolution: Choose your monitor’s native resolution if the launcher offers it. This is a practical starting point, not a Square Enix-mandated setting.
- Choose display mode: Use fullscreen if it works reliably on your setup. Choose windowed mode if you prefer easier app switching or encounter display-mode problems. There is no established universal performance advantage for either mode.
- Check the result: Look at both gameplay and cutscenes. If the image appears stretched or scaled poorly, try another supported display mode and compare the proportions.
- Leave timing controls alone at first: Begin with the defaults, then consider Memoria only if you want options the stock launcher does not provide.
When Memoria is worth considering
Memoria describes itself as an open-source community rewrite of the game’s engine, intended to add features, fix bugs, and expand modding. It is community software rather than an official Square Enix configuration utility. Its project documentation says primary options are in its launcher and deeper settings are in Memoria.ini. Widescreen and aspect ratio
Memoria release notes describe support ranging from 16:10 to ultrawide and recommend 16:9. A wider image can use more of a widescreen display, while an aspect-correct image preserves the intended proportions. Support and appearance may vary by release and scene, so inspect gameplay and cutscenes rather than assuming every view will look identical.
FPS and TPS are different settings
FPS controls presentation smoothness; TPS controls the game’s simulation or tick speed. Raising TPS is not a graphics-quality improvement and should not be treated as equivalent to raising FPS. A Steam Community guide gives examples of separate Battle, Field, World, and Menu FPS/TPS settings, but those examples are unofficial and version dependent. Start with defaults; if you adjust presentation frame rate, check movement, animations, and battles for acceptable behavior before changing anything else. Auto FPS and V-Sync
Memoria release notes for earlier versions describe V-Sync and an Auto FPS option that follows monitor refresh rate with V-Sync and is unlimited otherwise. Because current Canary behavior may differ from older releases, check the notes for the version you install instead of relying on an old example as the current default. Memoria releases

Requirements and compatibility context
Steam’s published requirements are legacy storefront requirements, not modern performance benchmarks. Its listing gives the following figures; it separately notes that the Steam Client supports Windows 10 and later starting January 1, 2024. That client note is distinct from the game’s listed operating-system requirements. Steam’s FINAL FANTASY IX listing

Controller choice is about input
Steam lists partial controller support. A gamepad is optional and affects how you control the game, not its graphics settings; keyboard input is also an option. Check compatibility for your controller and system if you choose to use one. Steam’s FINAL FANTASY IX listing
