Smart rings can collect signals such as pulse-related changes in blood volume, movement, skin-temperature trends and, on some models, sleep-period blood oxygen. Their apps use those signals to estimate sleep stages, respiration, activity and recovery. Those estimates are not the same as direct clinical measurements—and smart rings should not be used to measure blood glucose.
What smart-ring sensors actually detect
A ring’s sensors record physical signals. The app then processes them, often combining several signals to produce labels, scores and trends. The distinction matters: a sensor does not directly observe a sleep stage or a diagnosis.

Optical pulse sensing
Photoplethysmography, or PPG, shines light into the finger and detects changes in reflected light associated with blood-volume changes. Oura documents green and infrared PPG sensors for heart rate and heart-rate variability around the clock, as well as sleep respiration estimates. Its red and infrared LEDs are used for sleep blood-oxygen sensing. The exact sensors and features depend on the ring model. Oura Ring 4 sensor information

Movement sensing
An accelerometer records movement. Algorithms can use that signal to summarize activity and help estimate whether a person is asleep or awake. Movement is one input, not a direct measurement of sleep itself.

Temperature sensing
A temperature sensor can track variation or trends. Oura describes average body-temperature variations and temperature trends; that wording should not be mistaken for a clinical core-body-temperature reading.
Sleep-period blood oxygen
For Oura Gen3 and later, red and infrared light are used during sleep to estimate peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) from reflected light. Oura says results are available after sleep periods longer than three hours and reports the day’s longest sleep period. This is a sleep-period estimate, not an on-demand clinical oxygen measurement. Oura’s SpO2 feature details
What the app estimates from those signals
Sleep duration and stages, respiration, activity summaries, sleep scores and recovery or readiness indicators are algorithmic outputs. They are not separate sensors. For example, Oura says its sleep-stage algorithm combines heart rate, breathing, movement and temperature. A ring does not record brain waves, the key signal used in clinical sleep testing to distinguish sleep stages. Oura’s explanation of its sleep tracking

What a smart ring cannot establish on its own
It cannot reliably measure blood glucose without a blood test
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration states: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own.” The agency warns that devices claiming non-invasive glucose measurement do not directly test blood glucose. Do not buy or use a ring for glucose readings or make medication decisions from its claims. If your care depends on glucose measurements, use an appropriate FDA-authorized device selected with your clinician. FDA safety communication on smartwatches, smart rings and glucose
It is not a diagnosis or a substitute for indicated care
Wellness readings and trends should not be treated as diagnoses or replacements for clinically indicated measurements. Oura says its ring is not a medical device intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent medical conditions. Do not infer a condition such as sleep apnea, an arrhythmia or an infection from a consumer ring’s score or sensor reading. Regulatory status is specific to the exact device, feature, intended use and jurisdiction; the FDA’s sensor-based digital-health-device list is not comprehensive. How to interpret accuracy claims
There is no single accuracy percentage for smart rings as a category. Performance depends on the metric, model and software, fit and wear, comparison method and study population. A useful claim identifies the specific metric and device, the reference standard, and measures such as sensitivity and specificity—not just a headline percentage.

It included 96 participants aged 20–70 and 421,045 30-second epochs, with up to three nights per participant. For two-category sleep-versus-wake classification, Oura reports 91.7–91.8% accuracy, 94.4–94.5% sensitivity and 73.0–74.6% specificity. In that study, sensitivity was higher than specificity: the algorithm recognized sleep better than wake. These are results for that study and algorithm, not a guarantee for other rings or individual users. Oura’s account of the sleep-validation study
Why readings can vary
Fit and conditions affect what a ring can detect. Oura identifies ring fit and orientation, movement during sleep, restricted hand or arm blood flow, altitude, congestion, alcohol, age and sleep quality as factors that can affect overnight SpO2 readings. Oura also notes that nighttime oxygen readings are generally slightly lower than daytime readings, and that small differences between nights are expected. A trend over time may be more informative than one night’s result, but it remains a wellness estimate. Oura’s SpO2 guidance
Fit matters for more than oxygen sensing: an ill-fitting ring can interfere with sensor contact. Oura says sizing differs by generation and recommends wearing the sensors on the palm side of the finger. Check the instructions for the exact model rather than assuming sizing or placement is interchangeable. Oura Ring 4 fit and sensor information
Quick Recap
How to compare smart rings by their health sensors
- Check the exact signals. Look for documentation of PPG or heart-rate sensing, HRV, temperature, movement and SpO2. Do not assume every ring includes every sensor or feature.
- Check when a feature runs. A sleep-period oxygen estimate, such as Oura’s documented SpO2 feature, is not equivalent to a reading available on demand.
- Separate raw signals from interpretations. Light, motion and temperature are sensed; sleep stages, scores and recovery labels are calculated.
- Look for validation for the exact metric and model. Find the reference method, population and sensitivity or specificity where available. Treat a result reported for one algorithm as study-specific.
- Confirm fit and app requirements. Review model-specific sizing, sensor placement and the phone app or settings needed to access the feature.
- Match the device to the intended use. For health decisions, confirm authorization or clearance for the exact feature and intended use in your jurisdiction with an official source or clinician. A consumer wellness feature is not automatically a medical device.
