What Forward EV/EBIT Means and How to Interpret It for a Construction Company

Forward EV/EBIT divides enterprise value by forecast operating profit. For construction companies, interpreting it requires checking forecast definitions, project mix, backlog, asset intensity and peer comparability.

Forward EV/EBIT is a company’s enterprise value divided by its forecast earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) for a specified future period. For a construction company, the multiple is useful only when you check the forecast and accounting definitions, compare genuinely similar businesses, and assess how reliably projects can turn into profit and cash. There is no universal “good” construction-company multiple established by the sources cited here.

What forward EV/EBIT measures

The formula is forward EV/EBIT = enterprise value ÷ forecast EBIT. Enterprise value (EV) represents the value of the operating business to its providers of capital. Its precise calculation can vary by data provider; confirm how it treats cash, debt, leases, minority interests and other adjustments. Investment AB Latour describes its EV method as market capitalization adjusted for net debt in its method of calculation for EBIT multiples.

EBIT is earnings before interest and taxes, often described as operating profit. Unlike EBITDA, it includes depreciation and amortization. The Corporate Finance Institute explains that EV/EBIT compares enterprise value with EBIT and can be relevant for capital-intensive businesses because depreciation represents an economic cost (CFI’s EV/EBIT reference).

“Forward” means the denominator is an estimate rather than only a completed reporting-period result. It might refer to next twelve months (NTM), the next fiscal year, or another forecast period. Forecast multiples therefore need a period, date and estimate basis to be meaningful. The European Business Valuation Magazine’s Fall 2023 publication distinguishes actual multiples based on annual-report data from forecast multiples, including forward +1 year (EACVA, Fall 2023).

A simple calculation

If a hypothetical company has EV of 1.2 billion currency units and forecast EBIT of 100 million for the same period, its forward EV/EBIT is 12.0×. This illustrates the arithmetic; it is not a company valuation or market benchmark.

Why construction-company context matters

Depreciation and asset intensity

Contractors may own or lease fleets, plants and other equipment. Because EBIT includes depreciation, EV/EBIT reflects asset consumption more directly than EV/EBITDA, which excludes it. That does not make depreciation a substitute for cash capital expenditure: asset age, replacement schedules, leasing and accounting policies can differ. CFI discusses the ratio’s relevance to capital-intensive businesses in its EV/EBIT reference.

Backlog is visibility, not guaranteed profit

Backlog or order book can help frame future activity, but the terms are not uniform. Implenia defines its order book as contractually agreed services not yet performed and says it helps predict future construction activity in its 2025 alternative-performance-measures disclosure. Its statement describes the purpose of Implenia’s measure, not a guarantee for the company or the sector.

North American Construction Group (NACG) uses company-specific criteria for secured backlog and discusses its definitions in SEC-filed materials: its June 30, 2024 MD&A and June 30, 2026 MD&A. A headline backlog figure does not by itself establish profitable delivery, timing, collection or future EBIT.

Different businesses carry different economics

A general contractor, construction-materials producer, heavy-equipment services provider and infrastructure concession operator may have different margins, asset needs and risks. Peer selection should reflect revenue sources, geography, contract model and project exposure—not just the word “construction.”

Cycle position and forecast quality

A low forward multiple may result from forecasts that assume unusually strong, peak-cycle earnings. A high multiple may reflect a depressed forecast year, near-term investment or expectations of durable growth. Latour notes that economic fluctuations affect operating results and comparable multiples in its valuation-method note. Either way, a multiple inherits the assumptions in forecast EBIT.

Adjusted EBIT may not be comparable

Companies can define adjusted EBIT differently or include items such as equity-method contributions and acquisition effects. NACG, for example, describes equity investment EBIT using its ownership share of affiliate and joint-venture earnings before specified items in its June 30, 2026 MD&A. Check the issuer’s reconciliation before treating that figure as equivalent to consolidated operating profit.

How to interpret a forward EV/EBIT figure

  1. Identify the period and estimate. Record whether EBIT is NTM, next fiscal year or another period; the data date; and whether the estimate comes from analyst consensus, management guidance or another provider. Forward multiples vary with the period and basis, as illustrated by the distinction between actual and forecast measures in EACVA’s Fall 2023 publication.
  2. Match EV scope to EBIT scope. Confirm treatment of net debt, cash, leases, minority interests and joint ventures. If the numerator covers a different set of operations or claims than the denominator, the comparison can mislead. Latour’s stated EV convention is market capitalization adjusted for net debt (method note).
  3. Choose comparable peers. Compare businesses with similar regions, end markets, project types, contract-risk allocation, margins, asset intensity and accounting policies. Explain material differences rather than relying on a broad sector label.
  4. Stress-test forecast EBIT. Consider how the estimate changes if awards slip, costs overrun, equipment utilization declines or a large contract ends. Where earnings are uncertain or cyclical, compare scenarios rather than relying on a single forecast.
  5. Interrogate backlog definitions. Check what work is included, how much is secured, when it is expected to convert and what exclusions apply. Implenia’s order-book definition and NACG’s backlog criteria show why company disclosures matter (Implenia APM disclosure; NACG June 30, 2026 MD&A).
  6. Check operating and cash evidence alongside the multiple. Useful context includes EBIT margin, consistently defined return on invested capital, cash conversion, working capital, debt, maintenance or sustaining capital needs, and contract performance. EV/EBIT alone does not show how much cash is required to sustain earnings.

What a lower or higher multiple does—and does not—tell you

A lower forward EV/EBIT than a relevant peer set means the market assigns less enterprise value per unit of forecast operating profit. It does not prove the shares are undervalued. The difference may reflect weaker expected growth, riskier contracts, less reliable forecasts, poorer cash conversion or peak-cycle EBIT. A higher multiple can reflect more durable earnings or stronger growth expectations, but may also rely on optimistic estimates.

The sources reviewed do not establish a current universal construction-company forward EV/EBIT benchmark. A FCF Fox Corporate Finance monitor reports a “Construction Products / Services” category based on data as of January 9, 2024, but that dated category is not a current benchmark for construction companies generally (FCF Valuation Monitor, 2023 Q4).
