What to Do When Wildfire Smoke Triggers Poor Indoor Air Quality

When wildfire smoke worsens indoor air, check current conditions, move activity into a closed cleaner-air room, filter that room continuously, and prevent new particles indoors. Keep the space cool as well as clean: if a sealed home becomes dangerously hot, move to a cooled building or clean-air shelter. Follow evacuation orders at all times.

Take these steps first

  1. Check reliable air-quality information. Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local emergency alerts. Fine-particle levels can change several times during a day, so do not rely only on what you can see or smell.
  2. Reduce exposure. Stay indoors when officials advise it, cancel or shorten outdoor exertion, and close windows and exterior doors.
  3. Set up one cleaner-air room. Choose an interior room with few windows and doors. Keep it closed to smoky outdoor air and spend as much time there as practical.
  4. Run filtration continuously. Operate a correctly sized portable air cleaner on the highest fan setting you can tolerate. If you have central HVAC, use recirculation and a compatible MERV-13-or-higher filter.
  5. Stop indoor particle sources. Do not smoke or burn candles, and avoid fireplaces, gas or wood-burning appliances, frying, sweeping and vacuuming during heavy smoke.
  6. Check heat and health. Use cooling without drawing in smoky air. If the home becomes too hot, or anyone develops worsening breathing or heart symptoms, move to safer conditions and seek medical advice.

Why wildfire smoke can make indoor air unhealthy

Wildfire smoke contains gases and fine particles. AirNow identifies the fine particles, commonly called PM2.5, as the largest health threat. They can irritate the eyes and respiratory system and aggravate existing heart and lung disease. Smoke enters through open windows, doors, cracks and mechanical fresh-air intakes. Particles can also accumulate indoors during prolonged heavy smoke even when the room does not look hazy.

A closed building reduces exposure; it does not make smoke disappear. Filtration, source control and sensible cooling are needed together. Indoor steps also never replace evacuation instructions from local authorities.

How to make a cleaner-air room at home

Choose the room

Select a room toward the interior of the home, with as few windows and doors as possible. A bedroom or other room that can remain closed is usually easier to protect than a large open-plan living area. Keep the door shut when practical, and avoid repeatedly opening it to check outdoor conditions.

Close pathways for smoky air

Close windows and exterior doors before smoke becomes heavy. If your heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system has a fresh-air or outdoor-air intake, close it while smoke is present if the equipment instructions permit. Set the system to recirculate indoor air rather than bring in outside air.

Keep the room cool

Use air conditioning or a heat pump in a setting that recirculates air. Window units can help if their outdoor-air vent is closed and the unit is designed for that configuration. Draw shades during sunny hours and use fans to move already filtered indoor air. A fan does not remove smoke by itself and should not be used to pull smoky outdoor air through an open window.

Temperature is a safety issue separate from air quality. A sealed, uncooled home can become dangerous, particularly for older adults, children and people with medical conditions. If you cannot maintain a safe indoor temperature, go to a cooled, filtered building or clean-air shelter.

Filter particles with the right equipment

Portable air cleaners

A room-sized portable HEPA air cleaner is a practical way to reduce particles in one room. Select a unit whose stated room-size suitability covers the room you intend to protect, and compare its clean-air delivery or airflow at the fan setting you can run continuously. Also check noise, replacement-filter availability and cost, and whether the device generates ozone.

Place the cleaner where air can circulate freely, not behind furniture or curtains. Run it continuously during smoke events, ideally at its highest tolerable setting. Keep doors and windows closed so the cleaner is not continually fighting a smoky air leak. A cleaner sized for one room cannot provide the same protection throughout an entire house unless air can move between rooms and the device is rated for that larger volume.

Avoid ozone-generating air cleaners. Ozone is an irritant and these devices are not an appropriate response to wildfire smoke.

Central HVAC systems

If your home has central forced-air heating or cooling, use the system’s recirculation mode. On systems with an outdoor-air control, close that intake during smoke when the equipment allows it. Use a MERV-13-or-higher filter only if the system can safely handle the added airflow resistance.

Approach Best use What to check Important limitation
Portable HEPA air cleaner One bedroom, office or other selected room Room-size rating, airflow or clean-air delivery, tolerable noise, replacement-filter supply and ozone generation Protects the room it can adequately circulate through; it does not seal the rest of the home
Central HVAC filtration Whole-home air circulation when a central system is available Recirculation setting and whether the equipment safely supports a MERV-13-or-higher filter A high-efficiency filter that the system cannot handle can restrict airflow or damage equipment
Newer box-fan and filter cleaner Temporary fallback when a portable cleaner is unavailable Use a box fan made in 2012 or later; inspect the fan and filter assembly and supervise operation Do not treat it as equivalent to a certified portable cleaner; older fans should not be left unattended or running during sleep

If you are unsure whether your furnace or air handler can handle MERV-13 or higher, ask a qualified HVAC professional rather than guessing. During heavy smoke, inspect the filter and replace it when visibly soiled or more often than your normal schedule requires. Keep a correctly sized spare available if local supplies allow.

DIY fan-and-filter option

A newer box fan paired with a suitable particle filter can be an emergency alternative. AirNow advises using a fan from 2012 or later and avoiding older models. Older fans must never be left unattended, including while you sleep. Keep any fan assembly on a stable surface, away from water and combustible materials, and stop using it if the motor, cord or plug becomes hot or damaged.

Do not add pollution indoors

During heavy smoke, avoid activities that create particles or stir settled dust:

Protect people at higher risk

AirNow lists people with heart or lung disease, children and teenagers, and older adults (generally age 65 and over) as higher-risk groups. People with greater smoke exposure, pregnant people and those who cannot readily obtain cleaner indoor air may also face increased risk.

Anyone with asthma or another respiratory condition should follow their clinician’s action plan, keep prescribed medicines available and contact a clinician if symptoms worsen. Watch for increasing cough, wheezing, chest tightness, unusual shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness or reduced ability to carry out normal activities. Severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting or signs of a medical emergency require urgent help.

If you must go outside

Postpone nonessential trips and outdoor exercise while smoke is elevated. For essential outdoor work, limit the time outside, reduce exertion, take frequent breaks in cleaner indoor air and wear a well-fitting N95 respirator. A cloth mask does not provide the same protection against fine wildfire-smoke particles. A respirator must seal around the nose and mouth; facial hair or an incorrect size can reduce its effectiveness.

Do not use a respirator as permission to ignore evacuation orders or continue prolonged strenuous work in hazardous smoke. Follow local public-health and emergency-management instructions first.

Manage a smoke event over several days

Recheck conditions

Check the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map and local alerts each day and whenever wind or fire behavior changes. Adjust outdoor plans, ventilation settings and the amount of time spent in the cleaner-air room to the current conditions.

Inspect filtration

Look at portable-cleaner and HVAC filters regularly. Heavy smoke can load filters faster than normal; replace a filter when it is visibly dirty or when the equipment indicates replacement. A clogged filter can reduce airflow and make the system less effective.

Keep supplies ready

Maintain a working thermometer, water, prescribed medicines, spare compatible filters and N95 respirators for essential trips. Keep windows and doors operable so you can close them quickly when smoke arrives, and know which nearby buildings could provide cooled, filtered air.

Clean up after air improves

Wait for outdoor conditions to improve before opening windows for ventilation or performing dusty cleaning. When you do clean, use methods that do not resuspend particles, and resume normal ventilation only after checking current air-quality information.

When to leave home

Evacuate when authorities direct you to do so, even if your indoor air cleaner is operating. A cleaner-air room reduces exposure but cannot protect against a fast-moving fire, power loss, structural damage or unsafe heat. If you need to leave, take medicines, identification, water, respirators and any essential equipment, and follow the designated route and shelter instructions.

If there is no evacuation order but your home is too hot to occupy safely, move temporarily to a cooled public building, community clean-air shelter or another location with filtered air. Call ahead when possible to confirm hours, accessibility and whether pets are accepted.

How to choose between the available options

  • One room and reliable electricity: use a correctly sized portable HEPA cleaner continuously and keep that room closed.
  • Central HVAC: recirculate air and use MERV-13-or-higher filtration only after confirming system compatibility.
  • No portable cleaner: use a newer (2012 or later) box-fan-and-filter setup as a supervised fallback, never an unattended older fan.
  • Extreme indoor heat: move to a cooled, filtered location rather than keeping windows closed in an unsafe temperature.
  • Unavoidable outdoor exposure: shorten the task, reduce exertion and use a properly fitted N95 respirator.

EPA’s current wildfire public-health factsheet collection was updated September 1, 2026, and the related guide series is dated June 2026. Because smoke, weather and emergency directions change quickly, use current local alerts each time conditions deteriorate.
