Start by finding out whether the fault affects one tournament stream or every stream. If only one channel buffers, the problem is usually that broadcast, its ingest route, or its player session. If every channel fails, troubleshoot your browser or app, local network, and Twitch access. When you are broadcasting, OBS dropped-frame counters point mainly to an unstable route to the ingest server or a bitrate your upload connection cannot sustain—not automatically to an OBS software defect.
Work through the checks below in order. They begin with reversible tests, then move to game, encoder, router, and ISP changes that require more time or money.

1. Identify which part of the stream is failing
Before changing settings, reproduce the symptom and define its scope. Open another tournament channel or an unrelated live channel in the same service.
- Only one stream buffers: Treat the broadcast, its ingest path, or that channel’s playback session as the first suspect. Twitch playback guidance recommends trying other channels for this reason.
- Every stream buffers: Investigate your browser or app, home network, Wi-Fi, DNS, VPN or proxy, and the service connection.
- The stream plays, but your VALORANT match stutters: The game client, game server path, or local system may be at fault rather than video playback.
- Your own broadcast shows dropped frames in OBS: Read OBS’s network and encoding counters separately; dropped frames are not the same as low game FPS or encoder overload.
Use a second device on the same network if possible. If the second device also fails, the problem is more likely your connection or the streaming service than the original browser.

2. Stabilize playback on a viewer’s connection
Stop competing traffic
Pause game downloads, cloud backups, photo synchronization, large file transfers, and other video streams. A connection can have adequate headline speed yet still buffer when upload queues or Wi-Fi airtime are saturated. Retest the tournament stream after each major change so you know which action helped.
Power-cycle the network
- Close the stream and shut down high-bandwidth applications.
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem, wait for its normal online lights, then reconnect the router.
- Retry the stream before reopening downloads or sync tools.
Riot Games’ PC-connection guidance, dated May 16, 2026, includes this power cycle for unstable connections.
Test Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi
Connect the viewing PC directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. This is the most useful low-cost diagnostic because both Riot and OBS recommend wired testing for instability. If buffering disappears on Ethernet, investigate Wi-Fi interference, distance, channel congestion, mesh-node placement, or a failing access point before buying faster internet service. A Cat6 or Cat6a cable is suitable for this test.

Remove intermediary software
Temporarily disable a VPN or proxy and test again. VPN routing can add latency, congestion, or packet loss even when ordinary browsing seems normal. Also try another supported browser and the service’s official app. Twitch identifies network errors, compatibility problems, and hardware-acceleration issues as possible playback causes. If one browser fails while another works, update or reset the affected browser and test hardware acceleration as a reversible troubleshooting step.
3. If you are broadcasting with OBS
Read the counters correctly
OBS describes dropped frames as a connection that cannot remain stable or sustain the configured bitrate. The frames are lost on the path to the ingest server; they are not the same as skipped frames caused by rendering or encoding overload. OBS Project’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide (September 30, 2024) states: “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames.”
Watch the OBS status bar while streaming. A rising dropped-frame percentage indicates transport trouble. If the dropped-frame count stays at zero but rendering or encoding lag rises, investigate GPU load, game settings, or encoder settings instead.

Set a defensible starting bitrate
When troubleshooting, OBS recommends starting at about 75% of your stable upload speed (OBS Project, 2024). Use a measured, sustained upload result—not a provider’s advertised maximum—and leave headroom for game traffic, voice chat, and normal network variation. Lower the bitrate, stream briefly, and see whether the dropped-frame counter stops climbing. A lower bitrate can make the picture softer, but it tests whether the previous setting exceeded what the connection could sustain.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Try another ingest server
Change the stream destination to another available ingest server, then run a short private or test broadcast. A single server route can be congested or unstable while another route works. If one ingest location fixes the drops, the evidence points to the route or server rather than your OBS installation.
Use dynamic bitrate only as a temporary aid
Dynamic bitrate allows OBS to reduce output when congestion appears. It may prevent continual frame loss, but it lowers image quality and does not repair a bad line, overloaded Wi-Fi link, or poor route. Turn it off when diagnosing the underlying issue, then decide whether its quality trade-off is acceptable for live play.

Check software that can interfere
OBS lists VPNs, firewalls and antivirus filters, bundled network-optimizer software such as Lenovo Vantage or Killer NIC, and outdated network drivers as possible causes. Change one item at a time:
- Record your current setting so you can restore it.
- Temporarily pause the suspected VPN, optimizer, or security filter, following its own safety controls.
- Run a short OBS test and compare dropped-frame counters.
- Re-enable the item if it made no difference, then test the next one.
- Update the network adapter driver from your computer or motherboard manufacturer’s support page, then retest.
Do not permanently disable firewall or antivirus protection without replacing it with a correctly configured rule. If a security product is the cause, configure an exception for OBS and its required network access instead.
4. Separate VALORANT performance from stream performance
VALORANT can show a smooth stream while the game itself stutters, or the game can feel fine while the broadcast drops frames. Use the game’s own graphs rather than guessing.

Turn on the performance graphs
- Open VALORANT.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Video, then Stats.
- Enable the performance graphs for client FPS, server FPS, ping, and incoming and outgoing packet loss.
The indicators separate several failure modes. High average ping indicates delay to the game server. Low client FPS points to rendering or local CPU/GPU load. Low server FPS indicates a server-side simulation issue. Packet-loss graphs show traffic that is not arriving reliably. VALORANT’s gameplay-technology guidance (December 2, 2021) says its networking indicator appears when problems begin affecting movement or input processing; exact thresholds can vary by region or patch.
Fix low client FPS
Close competing applications, especially browsers with many tabs, recording tools you are not using, and overlays. In Settings → Video → Graphics Quality, lower Material Quality, Texture Quality, Detail Quality, and UI Quality. If the problem continues, disable Improve Clarity, Experimental Sharpening, Bloom, Distortion, and Cast Shadows. Change one group at a time so you can identify which setting controls the improvement.
Fix packet loss or unstable ping
- Enable incoming and outgoing packet-loss graphs and note whether one direction is worse.
- Power-cycle the modem and router for at least 30 seconds.
- Switch from Wi-Fi to Ethernet and retest in the same game mode or custom match.
- Enable VALORANT’s network buffering option and check whether movement becomes steadier. Buffering can smooth bursts at the cost of additional delay; treat it as a test, not proof that the line is healthy.
- Inspect router diagnostics for WAN errors, retransmissions, or link renegotiations.
- If loss remains on a wired connection, contact your ISP and provide timestamps and the router’s diagnostic information.
Riot’s connection checklist also recommends reducing other network usage, resetting TCP/IP, testing a public DNS resolver, disabling VPNs and proxies, performing a clean boot, and checking firewall configuration. Apply these changes methodically and keep notes so you can undo a change that does not help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Compare the likely fixes by scope and evidence
| Symptom | Most likely layer | Best first test | What a successful test tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| One tournament channel buffers while others play | Specific broadcast, ingest route, or player session | Open another channel, refresh the player, and try a different device | Your connection is less likely to be the primary fault |
| Every live channel buffers | Browser/app, home network, or service access | Pause traffic, power-cycle networking, test Ethernet, and try another browser | A local network or software change is implicated if playback recovers |
| OBS dropped frames increase | Upload path or ingest server | Lower bitrate, test another ingest server, and compare a wired connection | The original route or bitrate was unsustainable if drops stop |
| OBS rendering or encoding lag increases with zero dropped frames | Game, GPU, CPU, or encoder load | Close applications and lower VALORANT graphics settings | Local performance, not transport, is limiting the broadcast |
| VALORANT packet-loss graph rises | Network path to the game server | Ethernet test, router diagnostics, and ISP escalation | Persistent wired loss supports an ISP or upstream-path investigation |
| VALORANT client FPS falls | Local rendering workload | Lower Material, Texture, Detail, and UI Quality | Reduced graphics load should raise client FPS |
6. A complete escalation path
- Classify the scope: Compare one channel with several channels and, if possible, another device.
- Remove load: Pause downloads, synchronization, and extra streams.
- Restart networking: Power-cycle modem and router for at least 30 seconds.
- Go wired: Test with Ethernet before changing plans or purchasing equipment.
- Remove routing variables: Disable VPN or proxy and try another browser or the official app.
- For OBS: Start near 75% of stable upload speed, test another ingest server, and watch dropped versus rendering/encoding counters.
- For VALORANT: Enable Stats graphs and apply the fix that matches FPS, ping, server FPS, or packet loss.
- Apply advanced system checks: Update network drivers, reset TCP/IP, test public DNS, perform a clean boot, and verify firewall rules.
- Escalate with evidence: If high latency or disconnections remain, submit a Riot support ticket with logs, timestamps, region, whether Ethernet changed the result, and the performance graphs you observed.
7. Common mistakes that waste time
- Blaming Twitch immediately: A single failing channel and a service-wide failure have different fault domains.
- Assuming dropped frames mean OBS is broken: OBS identifies the connection and bitrate as the usual causes.
- Changing five settings at once: You lose the evidence needed to identify the actual trigger.
- Buying faster service before testing Ethernet: Wi-Fi interference or a damaged cable can mimic insufficient bandwidth.
- Leaving dynamic bitrate enabled and declaring the line fixed: It can hide congestion by reducing quality.
- Confusing game FPS with stream transport: Use OBS counters and VALORANT graphs to identify the layer before lowering quality.
8. What the available evidence does—and does not—show
There is no published tournament-wide buffering rate, dropped-frame prevalence, or guaranteed bitrate figure that can predict your experience. Results depend on the event’s broadcast path, your region, ISP routing, Wi-Fi conditions, browser or app, and the quality settings used by the broadcaster. Use the scope tests and counters above instead of treating an internet-wide number as a diagnosis.
If a wired connection still shows packet loss or high latency after router and software checks, the practical next step is your ISP or Riot support, depending on whether the same instability appears in other applications. Include measured symptoms and timestamps; “the stream lags” alone does not identify whether playback, transport, encoding, or the game server is responsible.
