If new Bluetooth headphones will not appear in your phone or computer’s device list, or appear but will not connect, first confirm Bluetooth is on, charge the headphones, and put them into the pairing mode specified for that exact model. Being powered on does not necessarily make headphones discoverable. Keep them close to the host and retry before moving on to clearing old pairings or troubleshooting the device’s operating system.
Why won’t my new Bluetooth headphones pair?
Pairing requires the headphones to be discoverable, not merely switched on. The button or sequence that starts discovery varies by model, so use the headphone maker’s instructions rather than assuming a long press or a particular case-button sequence. Apple distinguishes pairing mode from ordinary operation in its accessory pairing guidance; Microsoft likewise advises checking that the headphones are discoverable and within range.

Low battery, distance, an existing connection to another device, or a saved pairing that needs to be refreshed can also get in the way. Work through the checks below in order. A step that does not help is not, by itself, proof that the headphones are defective.

- Turn on Bluetooth on the host. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or computer and verify Bluetooth is enabled.
- Put the headphones in pairing mode. Follow the maker’s instructions for your precise model. A powered-on headset may not be advertising itself to nearby devices.
- Charge the headphones. Charge them, or leave them connected to power while you retry. Low battery can prevent some accessories from entering pairing mode or staying connected.
- Move them close. Keep the headphones near the phone or computer while pairing. Apple recommends keeping the accessory and host close; Microsoft also identifies range as a possible obstacle.
- Retry from the host’s Bluetooth device list. Look for the headphone name and select it. If your model supports a manufacturer app, check whether that app needs Bluetooth permission to find or set up the headphones.
If the headphones show up but will not connect
Remove the saved pairing and start again
If the headphones were previously paired with this phone or computer, or the device appears in the Bluetooth list but pairing fails, remove or forget that entry in Bluetooth settings. Put the headphones back into their model-specific pairing mode, then try pairing again.

Disconnect competing devices
If the headphones connect to another phone, tablet, or computer, disconnect or unpair them from that device before retrying. Apple specifically recommends unpairing an accessory from other devices when it pairs elsewhere but not with an iPhone or iPad. This can help when the headphones are already connected to a different host.
Refresh Bluetooth and restart both devices
On Windows, Microsoft recommends turning Bluetooth off, waiting 10 seconds, then turning it back on. You can try the same basic refresh on other hosts, then restart the headphones and the phone or computer and retry pairing. Keep the headphones in pairing mode during the attempt.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 troubleshooting
Check Bluetooth support and start pairing
First confirm that the PC actually supports Bluetooth and that Bluetooth is enabled. Microsoft’s Windows pairing guide directs Windows 11 users to Bluetooth Quick Settings and the list of new devices. On Windows 10, the documented path is Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices. Exact labels can vary with Windows updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your headphones support Swift Pair, Windows may show a notification when the nearby headphones are in discoverable pairing mode. Swift Pair does not replace putting the headphones into that mode.

If the headphones do not appear
Windows 11 can use the Advanced device-discovery setting if a Bluetooth device is missing from the list. Check that setting, confirm the headphones are nearby and discoverable, and retry. If the headphones were listed before, remove them from Bluetooth settings and add them again.
Run the Windows checks
- Toggle Bluetooth off, wait 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Charge the headphones and retry pairing.
- Check for Windows updates, then restart the PC.
- If the earlier steps have not helped, Windows 11 users can open Get Help and run the automated Bluetooth troubleshooter.
Microsoft’s current checklist covers Windows 10 and Windows 11; consult its Bluetooth troubleshooting instructions for current steps and labels.

Only consider a USB adapter if the PC has no Bluetooth
A USB Bluetooth adapter can add Bluetooth capability to a Windows PC that lacks built-in Bluetooth. It is not a general remedy for headphones that fail to pair with a PC that already has Bluetooth. Verify Bluetooth is absent before considering an adapter; otherwise, investigate discovery mode, saved pairings, charge, range, Windows settings, and compatibility first.
iPhone and iPad checks
Use Apple’s Bluetooth accessory pairing steps to check distance, pairing mode, and power. If the headphones pair with another device but not the iPhone or iPad, remove their pairing from that other device and try again. If setup uses a companion app, check that the app has Bluetooth permission.

Contact the headphone maker to confirm compatibility if the issue persists. Apple advises contacting Apple Support if Bluetooth cannot be enabled, no Bluetooth accessories connect, or the accessory maker has confirmed the headphones work correctly.
Android and macOS: use the makers’ current instructions
Android menu names and headphone pairing controls vary by phone and model. Use the phone maker’s current Bluetooth instructions and the headphone maker’s instructions for entering discovery mode; there is no single menu path or pairing sequence established for every Android phone and headset.
For a Mac, consult current Apple and headphone-maker support instructions for the specific device and macOS version. The steps in this guide do not establish a universal macOS settings path for third-party headphones.

Use another Bluetooth device to narrow down the problem
Try pairing the same headphones with a second supported phone or computer. Microsoft recommends this test for Surface Headphones; more generally, it is a useful diagnostic check, not a definitive hardware test for every model.
| Test | What it helps isolate |
|---|---|
| Pair the same headphones with another phone or computer. | If they work there, investigate the original host’s Bluetooth settings, saved pairing, or compatibility. If they fail on multiple hosts after model-specific setup, manufacturer support or a return/exchange discussion may be reasonable. |
| Connect a different Bluetooth accessory to the original phone or computer. | If that accessory also fails, the original host’s Bluetooth function or settings may be involved. This is a diagnostic inference, not a specific instruction in the cited support guidance. |
For Surface Headphones, see Microsoft’s setup and pairing troubleshooting steps. For other models, ask the headphone maker to confirm the correct pairing procedure and compatibility. If headphones still cannot be paired after following the model-specific steps across supported hosts, contact the maker for next steps.
