For the best PlayStation Portal settings, choose 1080p High Quality during Remote Play, then restart the session. For a smoother connection, focus on the network: wire your PS5 to the router when possible and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. The resolution setting sets a quality ceiling; it does not guarantee a particular bitrate, frame rate, or latency.
Set the PlayStation Portal to 1080p High Quality
- Start Remote Play on the Portal.
- Open the Quick Menu and select Max Resolution.
- Choose 1080p High Quality.
- Restart the Remote Play session to apply the change.
PlayStation says 1080p High Quality uses a higher bitrate than 1080p Standard. The Portal still adjusts video quality automatically to the internet connection, so the selected mode is the maximum resolution setting—not a promise that every moment will stream at that quality. See PlayStation’s 1080p High Quality mode announcement and Quick Menu guidance.

Choose between High Quality and Standard
| Mode | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p High Quality | Higher bitrate than Standard; video quality remains subject to automatic adjustment for the connection. | Use it when the Remote Play connection is stable and you want the sharpest available setting. |
| 1080p Standard | Lower bitrate than High Quality; video quality remains subject to automatic adjustment for the connection. | Consider it if High Quality coincides with interruptions or quality swings, after checking network conditions. |
PlayStation’s documentation describes these as maximum-resolution modes; it does not identify a Portal toggle that independently raises frame rate. If play feels uneven, improving connection stability is a more grounded first step than expecting a hidden FPS boost.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the recommended network setup for PS Portal
- Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet when practical. PlayStation recommends a wired internet connection for the console.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal. If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, PlayStation recommends putting the PS5 and Portal on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check band steering. If the router keeps moving the Portal between Wi-Fi bands and the session becomes unstable, disable band steering if your router allows it.
- Check the connection quality, not just the headline speed. PlayStation recommends a high-speed connection of at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. This is guidance, not a guarantee of a particular resolution, frame rate, or latency; public Wi-Fi quality may be outside your control.
These recommendations come from PlayStation’s Remote Play setup guidance. A faster speed test alone cannot establish that the full network path will remain stable or responsive.

Troubleshoot an unstable Remote Play connection
- Update Portal system software. Check the device for an available update. PlayStation’s system software update page lists version 7.0.2 with performance and stability improvements; availability can vary during rollouts, so the version offered on your device may differ.
- Check the PS5 connection. If it is on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet; if it remains wireless, make sure it shares the Wi-Fi network used by the Portal.
- Check the Portal’s band. Prefer 5 GHz and investigate whether band steering is switching it between bands.
- Try 1080p Standard if the session remains unstable. Restart Remote Play after changing the mode, and assess whether interruptions improve. Lowering the maximum bitrate may help in some conditions, but it cannot fix latency or an unreliable network path.
Know what the settings can—and cannot—change
PlayStation Portal streams Remote Play from a PS5; it is not a PS4 Remote Play device, according to PlayStation’s compatibility information. The resolution mode controls the stream’s maximum quality, while the network determines how consistently the Portal can receive it. No setting can make a weak or congested connection behave like a stable wired link.
