To set up a Fire TV Stick, connect it to your TV’s HDMI port and the power source specified for your model, switch the TV to that HDMI input, then follow the on-screen steps to join Wi‑Fi and sign in to your Amazon account. Amazon’s cited walkthrough is for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), so check your own model’s instructions and included connectors before applying its port-specific details.
What you need before setup
Have these items ready before starting:
- Your Fire TV Stick and included remote.
- The power cable and any power adapter supplied for your model.
- AAA batteries for the remote, if included with your device.
- A TV with an available HDMI port.
- Your Wi‑Fi network name and password.
- An Amazon account, or the details needed to create one.
Amazon’s checklist for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation) also lists a TV USB port and an optional HDMI extender. Box contents and connectors can vary by model; see Amazon’s setup instructions for that model and follow the documentation for your own stick.

Connect the Fire TV Stick and turn on the TV
- Plug the power cable into the Fire TV Stick’s power port.
- Insert the stick into an open HDMI port on the TV. If your model’s instructions allow it, connect the power cable to the TV’s USB port; otherwise use the supplied power arrangement.
- Put the batteries in the Fire TV remote, turn on the TV, and use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select the HDMI port used by the stick.
For the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation), Amazon’s guide describes powering it through the TV’s USB-A port. That is a model-specific example, not a universal connector requirement. If the TV’s USB port cannot supply enough power or the included cable cannot reach, use a compatible power adapter and longer cable as described in Amazon’s low-power guidance.
Connect to Wi‑Fi and sign in
- When the setup screen appears, follow its prompt to connect. You can scan the displayed QR code with a phone or use the Fire TV remote to select your network manually.
- If choosing manually, select your Wi‑Fi network name and enter its password. Check the spelling and capitalization if the connection is rejected.
- Complete the account sign-in or registration prompt. Amazon’s setup flow may let you scan a QR code or visit an address shown on screen and enter an activation code. Follow the screen if your account uses a passwordless sign-in or presents different options.
- Continue through the remaining on-screen questions. Optional equipment-control setup, such as configuring a soundbar, is not required to join Wi‑Fi.
Amazon’s model-specific walkthrough describes this overall process as connecting the stick to the TV and following the on-screen instructions: How to Set Up Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation).

If setup does not work
The TV shows a blank screen or the wrong picture
Use the TV remote to select the HDMI input where the stick is plugged in. If there is still no picture, check that the stick is powered, use the cable and adapter specified for your device, and try connecting it directly to the TV rather than through an HDMI hub. See Amazon’s Fire TV power and screen troubleshooting steps.
The stick reports low or insufficient power
Try another TV USB port if one is available. If the warning remains, Amazon recommends a 5W (5V, 1A or equivalent) adapter with a longer power cable, or connecting the cable through an adapter to a wall outlet. Check that the adapter and cable suit your model; this extra power setup is a fallback when the TV port is insufficient or the supplied lead cannot reach, not a required add-on for every installation. Details are in Amazon’s low-power notification guide.

The remote will not pair
Keep the remote within 10 feet (3 m) of the Fire TV Stick. Hold Home until the on-screen pairing prompt appears; Amazon says this may take about 10 seconds. If it still does not pair, reseat the batteries, try fresh alkaline batteries, reset the remote, or restart the Fire TV. See Amazon’s remote-pairing instructions and remote reset steps.

The stick does not fit comfortably behind the TV
A compatible HDMI extender may help if the rear panel is cramped, neighboring cables block access, or the TV is wall-mounted with rear-facing ports. Amazon lists an extender as optional for the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Generation); a compatible extender you already own may work. Check your model’s guidance before using one.
